@ No problem - I am having real issues trying to work our whether I need to have the 16-80 instead of my 18-55 !! I suspect the answer is I need both :)
@runningoffinstinct Жыл бұрын
I don't really understand why the 18-55 is more of a videography lens than the 16-80? 16-80 has more stabilization, and a wider focal range which can make for more interesting variation in shots? I could barely tell a difference in the vlog comparison for the bokeh. I'm not arguing, just generally curious if you could talk about that a little more. I am using the x4 mainly for video.

Hey! So the 18-55 has a different focus motor, it's similar to that on the new 18-120, you can change focal length during shoots, and the lens maintains the focus accurately. Plus, the faster apeture is a lot more important for videos because, in low light, you can't put your camera on a tripod and have a long exposure shoot.
@runningoffinstinct Жыл бұрын
@ Oh that is very interesting I didn't know that about the focus. So the 16-80 will lose focus if you zoom while recording?
Жыл бұрын
@@runningoffinstinct yes, and it's terrible you basically can't focus with it mid shot at all.

@ Very helpful thank you! I recently sold my 18-55 and picked up a 23 1.4 I'll have to get another one.

@Running Off Instinct good thing they are super cheap second hand! 23 f1.4 is such a solid lens, great all-rounder focal lenght and fast too.

The 16-80mm does not have a true constant aperture, that'd be impossible. f/stop = focal length / diameter of effective aperture (entrance pupil) of the lens. With a zoom lens you change the focal length as you zoom in and out. Fujifilm just artificially stopped down the lens at the widest focal lenght, probably to help with corner sharpness, contrast and to limit other optical aberrations. When you zoom in the aperture blades are opening up to maintain the f/4 aperture through the whole zoom range. That being said, when you set the aperture to f/4 at 18mm on your 18-55mm, it will stay at f/4 regardless of you zooming in or out. For landscapes you'll be at f/9 to f/11 anyway, as you usually want everything in focus when shooting landscape scenery.

That's interesting! Thanks for the info I'll look into that right now! There is always something to learn! :-) I went into the aperture situation a bit deeper in this video, because that's the most important difference between these two, but as you said not for everyone, landscapers would have a better time with the 16-80! Saying that I really adore the 18-55 lens I think it's so underrated but I am mostly not videos.
@Bocsaphoto2 жыл бұрын
Misinformation. What you said about f stop is true, but while many people think that the f-number is determined by the physical measurement of the iris diameter, this is not true. F-number is determined by the focal length ÷ the *apparent* diameter of the iris. Not its physical diameter. The 16-80, along with many other constant aperture lenses, have the elements in front of the iris zoom such that the apparent diameter of the iris grows at the same rate as the zoom. This allows the ratio to remain the same, i.e. The f-number. There are many youtube videos explaining constant aperture. You can test this out yourself by just looking through the lens and observing how the size of the iris appears to change as you zoom in and out. Also, stopping your 18-55 down to f4 on the wide end and zooming in actually does the same thing as artificially stopping down the lens as you zoom in. The aperture blades do compensate for this.

Yeah, it's 3 completely different videos. I guess you can check out all of them if you are interested. There is no better or worse video in my eyes. The conclusions are similar in all 3 videos.

This is potentially a really nice review and an important topic, especially for new users choosing a first lens. BUT your delivery is FAR too fast. It's like you're trying to cram everything into a fixed time like these annoying insurance adverts. Slow down and take your time the result would be much better!

How about the tamron 17-70 f2.8 ? Will it be a good alternative?
2 жыл бұрын
Hey! It sure is a great alternative, I am planning to get one of those! The only thing that's missing from that lens is the aperture ring. That lens in paper is a different beast having a constant f2.8 aperture.

I looked at the Tamron, but it is just too gigantic for me.
@colinhoward22002 жыл бұрын
I suspect unlikely if you want to retain focus while zooming shooting video. Your only option is the 18-55 for this. The 18-120 retains focus, but has much bigger issues due to its lack of OIS (which the 18-55 has). I also bought the 16-80mm to try, but that does not retain focus - I am sending mine back tomorrow, and the 18-55mm still wins! Would be interested In feedback on the Tamron - but then it will lose as it is too big to be a travel lens. In essence the 18-55 is pretty much the most versatile lens you will ever own - and oh it also opens up to F2.8. I just can never replace it TBH
