Hello Ken. I like night photography and few few days now I started the night street photography. The samyang/Rokinon 12mm f/2 is too wide for this and the Fuji 18-55 f/2.8-4, while I think is the best all around lens is not so good for night street. Is it worth investing the extra $ for the 1.4 versions? Thanks.
@narigueta0077 жыл бұрын
I havent found none on youtube comparing the kit lens 18-55 vs 35mm f/2. What's your opinion? will the fix lens 35mm take much better pics than kit at 35mm? im trying to figure out if it is worth the investment, or just keep shooting with kit.
@jamesmason34567 жыл бұрын
I have the 35mm f1.4 and while it is noisy and slow it does render very charp images and amazing bokkeh! And for portrait work and street shooting I love this lens. Now, Ken if I'm choosing to pick up that 23mm focal length (I learned to shoot on a Spotmatic with a 35mm f1.2 lens) am I better off with the 23mm f2 or the 18-55 f2.8-4? The 18-55 is more versatile but at 23mm are the images as sharp as the 23mm?
@peterflor367 жыл бұрын
In several of your videos you mentioned that the 23 1.4 is Fuji's second worse lens. Do you still feel the same way? I think this is somewhat similar to what you said about the 16-55 in your older videos but now it looks like that lens is always attached to your camera. You should do an update video on Fuji's best/must-have lenses.
@stevelink217 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter. Perhaps you mean the "kit" 18-55? I have the 16-55 and can state with a fair amount of certainty that it is one of the best Fujinon zooms, as it is tack sharp throughout the range, weather-sealed, built like a tank, constant f/2.8 aperture, and fast AF (for a zoom)!

Interesting that you say if you had to choose you'd keep the 35 1.4 and the 23mm f2. For my purposes I chose the 23 1.4 and 35mm f2. I appreciate your videos.
@anonymousl5150 Жыл бұрын
I think he changed his mind over time, if you look at his pdf he doesn't like how soft 23 f2 is between 2 and f2.8 and rates it the lowest out of the 4. This is also shown by mtf charts. The best bang for your buck is the 35 f2 (which is sharper but has more distortions) and the underrated 50 f2 which is a sharpness killer and best optically out of the f2 groups. While the 1.4s rate higher in things like microcontrast, I'd rather use a cheap vintage lens for that sort of thing because their autofocus is awful/ outdated compared to the f2s.

is it worth spending the extra money for that extra stop on the 23mm?

Chatter and noise on xpro 1 is present on 23mm and 35mm f2 ( not on every sample, tested 5 of each and beat me why mine does chatter less than other? ), on XT2 however less to non, Short focus on 23 f2 is soft, try to avoid f2 or for optimum stop down at least to 2.8..Both f2 making less noise than f1.4 but ehhh noise what and where is the reference ...compared to olympus or pana it is noisy (comparing here apple with orange) , compared to f1.4 it is quite. I like rendition of 23mm f2 and 35 f1.4 :-) , focus ring on 23 f2 has a bit long throw but not show stopper since itvis way wider than on 35 f2.. Anyway , Ken one big thank you for good , accurate and as usual "honest " compare,.I can only confirm all findings you mentioned in this video.

I really like my 35mm f1.4. I also want to get the 23mm f2, as well. I'd like to get the 50-200mm zoom, so I'm kind of stuck on what's next. I've picked up a bunch of vintage Pentax lenses and am really enjoying them as well, since MF isn't an issue for me.
@eagleeye89165 жыл бұрын
Picked up a 18-55mm lens kit and added the 23mm f2 for an extra $150 it's a no brainer . Lighter more compact , faster, quite, weather sealed and got it for a steal .
@BenVallack4 жыл бұрын
Aperture chatter means you wouldn’t use it for video? Presumably if you leave it at a fixed aperture it doesn’t make any noises while shooting video?
@TriWaZe4 жыл бұрын
Focusing makes noise as well. There are other videos showing this. The F2 is near silent.
@stevelink216 жыл бұрын
HI Ken, if I'm not mistaken, I thought you made a video praising the XF23mm f/2 as a "Must Have" lens based on its sharpness, rendition, micro-contrast, and overall image quality! In fact, I bought that lens largely based on your glowing recommendation...That's why I was surpirsed at your rather pedestrian comments here.
@chrismercado8267 жыл бұрын
The only one of those lenses is I have owned is the 35mm f2 I like the lens but I hated manual focusing on it. The focus throw is way too long. It's only a little bit better at f16. It makes me think that Fuji tries its best to have their lenses behave like full frame lenses which explains the odd focal lengths or they figured that their users will use auto focus most of the time, hence why most lenses don't have distance scales.
@gaza45437 жыл бұрын

Is there a situation where an AR coating mark does make a meaningful difference? I suppose it's worse on rear element than on front (suppose, meaning I don't actually know). I remember seen sensor flare with some lenses when used at night with mirrorless cameras, and those lenses did not have any problems in them, so it's not the coating marks that caused that. I've bought several lenses along the years with slight marks here and there and never seen how that might affect the photos, although it must be said that I've never owned two copies of the same lens with one in mint condition to compare. And by AR coating marks I don't mean a lens which someone "cleaned" using sandpaper. I never heard someone say: that's a superb photo, but I wish it wasn't ruined by your AR coating marks.

Hey ken, Obviously this comment is about 3 years in the future, but if you were to do this exact review today, Jan/2020, mounted on the new X-Pro 3 or X T3, how would you rate the performance of the older wider aperture 16, 23, 35, 56 vs the newer f/2 versions.What would be your choice now, one over the other, today?
@GenVirtu4 жыл бұрын
Last week I scored a 23mm f1.4 prime used for $670, mint condition. A bit Pricey but it was the one I really wanted.
@stevelink217 жыл бұрын
Ken, nice comparison as always! I own the 35 f/2, have no complaints on performance, sharpness, etc., but would prefer the wider 23 f/2 on my X-Pro2. However, being a sharpness fanatic, I only hesitate because I don't want to sacrifice sharpness. (Though I rarely shoot wide open...prefering to use optimum aperture for sharpness (around f/8). Sorry if I missed it, but did you say that both f/2 versions are equal in sharpness at mid-apertures? Thank you.
@pepavana7 жыл бұрын
hi there, i am planning to buy a xpro2 with a 23 mm...f 1.4 for the sharpness like you said and better performance in poor light conditions....and I like the distance numbering on it, but I read about the blocking of the viewfinder with bigger lenses.... do you experienced that too? Than the 23mm f2 would fit better on the pro?! what compromise did you choose?
@MrDomq227 жыл бұрын
just jumped back into from Sony for the 2nd time. this time, I went with the xe2. I've only had it for 2 days and I've already noticed a difference from the xpro 1 I had. I can tell I'm going to stick with fuji for a long time.

Thanks a lot for this lenses battle :) Can you do a 23mm f2 vs zoom kit (18-55 or 16-50) , I mean should we get the 23mm f2 lens when we already have one of the kit lenses 18-55 or 16-50 and if yes what are the added values of this prime? Is it softer or equal at f2.0 vs f3.5 @23mm on the 16-50 for example which will give brighter results in low light? Is the 23mm f2 having better microcontrast compared to the zoom kits making shots more ''punchy''?
@stevelink217 жыл бұрын
Jeff Merheb Hi Jeff. While I haven't yet done a side-by-side comparison of 23 f/2 and the stellar 16-55 f/2.8, since I only recently acquired the 23, IMHO, the 16-55 might be sharper wide open (f/2.8) than the 23 is at f/2. However, at. other apertures, I think that, while close, the 23 would win in terms of sharpness and AF speed. That said though, the 16-55 f/2.8 is a superb zoom, and gives primes a run for the money!

decisions, decisions... so, here's my dilemma. I work part time at a camera shop and I can get discounts (obviously), but we don't have the option to get just the body... I've decided to get the X-T20 and have the option to either get it with the 16-50 kit lens or the better of the 2 kit lenses, the 18-55mm F2.8-4. I'd like to get the 23mm F2 as well... (and that's about all my budget can handle)... if it was my choice, I'd get just the body and the 23mm F2, but again, that's not an option... so, my question is... Should I save some money and get the cheaper of the 2 kit lenses and basically just use the 23mm F2? Or should I cough up a little more money and get the 18-55mm F2.8-4?

is it just the price that puts you to say the 23 f2 over the 23f1.4? is the 23 f1.4 a better lens than the 23 f2 and 35 f1.4?
@alexanderthomas5427 жыл бұрын
I agree the chatter is very prominent on the 1.4's, in my experience the older fuji lenses are more sharp and more characterfull 35mm especially, f2's are near silent but not for the sake of the better optics of their former counterparts , 60mm macro is the tits , 56 mm sharpest but too sluggish like an x-pro 1 hunting for something to lock on ,
