You'll want the dark silver if you want to be discrete. However, it looks so retro, no one will suspect much anyway.

The only issue is that the X-A7 doesn't use an X-Trans array like your X-T3 which is an amazing camera. The X-E3 might be a better choice.

Thanks for the kind words. For tripods, you'll need to specifiy if you're shooting stills or video,; whether you're travelling a lot or relatively static; and what kind of shoots you're planning - night sky, blurred waterfalls ???

Planning to get this with the 35mm f2, vs the m200 with the 22mm f2, both would also have kits, heard Fuji's kit is better than Canon or Sony kits

That would be my assessment. In general Fujifilm's kit lenses tend to be of higher quality (15-45 is the exception).

Hello, does this camera overheat if record 4K for an 60minutes by preressing Record each 15 minutes? If Overheat due battery I can change it to adapter battery. Want to pick this camera for vlog versus Canon M50, per it's stanning image against Canon, but somtimes I am recording shows and 15 minutes too low, but no problem to click Record again, but I afraid to get overheat, how real is it , specially in Full HD? Hope it is nothing like Panagonic GX880 Thanks )

Any small camera will overheat, it's impossible to predict how quickly as it's dependent on the ambient temperature. If you need to record 4K video continuously for 60 minutes, do not purchase this camera. Look at a larger camera like the Fujifilm X-H1, or X-T3.

Wow, this was the best detailed reviews I've seen on this particular model! I am debating between this X A7 or the Canon EOS 250D. Primarily using more for photos over video. Beginner camera but looking to grow with one. Any help with deciding between those 2 cameras? Thanks!!

While either would be a good choice (and I have not reviewed the 250D/SL3) the X-A7 provides lots of good beginner functionality - but the 250D likely has more potential.

Your demo images are "INCREDIBLE," one could relish them in this forum as well as Insta. or any other social media platform. Needless to say, the review is through and up the usual high Maarten Heilbron standard. Your videos cleverly "kills two birds" with one stone, in that they are review as much as tutorial. My 7 year old Fujifilm X10 is acting-up, I am thus looking for a compact camera with touch screen and fixed zoom or inter changeable lens, this is a solid candidate, won't you say?

Thank you for your excellent in depth review. I love your videos. I'm more certain about XA7 now. I've been using Canon SL1/100D for years. While I love the small form factor and Canon's color production, I've always been dissapointed with its lowlight performance as I usually can't bring the iso higher than 800. Seeing your lowlight photo samples on XA7, it looks really good. In your experience is it the best lowlight performance for that price range (budget/beginner camera)? And is the fuji XC 15-45 kit lens better than Canon's mirrorless kit lens? I would really appreciate your opinions on this 🙏 thanks before!

I don't have the tools to do that kind of detail - check at dpreview where they do. As for the 15-45mm lens, I'd avoid it as it's Fujifilm's least desirable lens. The 18-55 is the better choice.

Awesome review Maarten, nicely put together. I use my Sony A6000 for occasional vlogging (say once a month, and usually indoors). Would the X-A7 ($530) or the X-T200 ($660) be worthy upgrades to the A6000? If yes, which one do you recommend given my usage?

That is an option in the Save Data Setting menu section.

It does to many people. Using the viewfinder steadies the camera in a way that the LCD cannot. The viewfinder is often easier to see in bright situations and helps to concentrate one's attention.

@@shrutik9588 I would suggest that an on-camera mic is not ideal for recording music. You need to choose the right mic to record guitar and then place the mic where it gets the best sounds. That probably means an external recorder and syncing your audio in editing.

Use the velvia film simulation and if you want even more saturated colours, increase the Color setting. One trick to generally more saturated colours is to slightly underexpose an image.

@@SajanSwain You will be disappointed and frustrated with these cameras, which are capable of but not suitable for video, if that is your main purpose. Consider the X-T3 and 4.

Record on an external recorder. Between the low quality of the tiny microphone and the limitations of the on-board audio systems, it's not reasonable to expect high quality audio from this or any digital camera.

@@MaartenHeilbron Yes, I noticed that on the XA-7 there are no dB adjustments allowed. Simple options for Volume Microphone Level 1-4 which are useless. Can toy recommend an external recorder please? @@HeatSeekingMouse A very simple option is the Zoom F2, which includes a lapel mic. Beyond that there are external recorders like the Tascam DR-70D, but they will require more expensive mics with XLR connectors.

These are all good general purpose cameras suitable for beginners. In that category, I currently suggest the Fujifilm X-S10 (or X-T30). The Sony A6100 is also a good choice.

@@MaartenHeilbron I love using an optical viewfinder. But xa7 lacks it. Budget is not an isuue, But the risk is, because it'll be my first camera. Moreover cheap dslrs attract when I think of limiting budget. Xt100 doesn't lock the focus on the moving objects efficiently whereas a Sony a6000 does. I'm wavering alot. Please guide me and provide a few steps to decide.

@@kashishkochhar4085 If this is your first camera, why do you "love" an optical viewfinder? You won't find one in any of the models you mention - you'll need a DSLR, not mirrorless. Sounds like you're leaning to the Sony for the tracking, that's a good rationale.

To be good for vlogging, the LCD should face forward, there should be a mic input, continuous auto focus should be steady and support face detection, with excellent stabilization. Fujifilm, Sony and Panasonic have multiple choices.

I don't intend to use camera for wedding and asked him because he may have good knowledge about camera because its his daily work. An entry level in the subject is coming out that amazed me as a definition (compared to the price); I made comparisons with the Imaging Resource Comparometer, which I hope you know, and it seemed to me at the level of the best apsc of fuji (x T3). I would like your opinion on this and who knows maybe a coffee break. Of course the test is done not with kit optics but with high quality fixed optics ... in this case the 56 mm fuji. Although there is some value in these - for those who are desperate to analyze - there is a lack of consistency in ISO ratings and in-camera metering that leads me not to fully trust these, or to base any opinion or judgement on this kind of test. My sense is that the sensors for nearly all cameras come from a small group of very high quality suppliers, and that quality is much more dependent on lenses than on sensors. Trying to find an absolute comparison between two cameras is exceedingly difficult. Instead of looking at test samples, have a look at the range of images that photographers have posted on flickr, smugmug or another photo sharing site to give you an idea of what both amateurs and professionals can do with the camera.

Thanks for your kind words. You are panning and tilting too quickly for the internal stabilization engine. It's trying to keep the shot steady, but then realizes that it can't and jumps to a new framing. Either slow down or turn it off.

So far, I couldn't manage to find a single gimbal compatible with popular gimbals. Your suggestions are highly appreciate!

Another great review as always. That is too bad about the poor AF performance while vlogging. The stabilization seems decent enough and that flip screen would make this a great Fuji camera to vlog with if not for the poor AF. Was the AF performance worse than the xt100 in your experience? Thanks.

Thanks for the kind words. Really, yes. In spite of the other good focus performance. I just couldn't understand why when I was centred, the closest object and had the focus square on my face it wouldn't stay with me. On other models, like the X-T3 and X-T30, AFC in video is excellent.

Wow this video is soooo helpful. My girlfriend bought this camera today, and I sent her this so it could help her learn her new camera. I have a Sony A7III, and I must say, the image quality from this camera is insane, even though she only has the kit lens, I was genuinely surprised! I would say, this camera is worth the purchase!

Yes. If your purpose is video, this is not a good choice. Consider the X-T3 or X-T4 instead, they are superior video models in every way.

To me using a Bayer array instead of the X-Trans III array makes it a nonstarter because the X-Trans III array creates images with a much more natural grain. For the casual shooter it look like a nice camera at a good price. For a bit of a higher price you can get a X-E3.

Been looking at the EOS RP but is hesitant due to investing in the RF lens vs cost. Saw Fujifilm and wanting to test the ecosystem. The X-A7 seems to be the sweet spot for what I want/willing to spend vs what I would get and fun factor (that 16:9 swivel screen looks awesome). I have also looked at the Canon M-50 as well as the M-100 and M-200. I would get a good 50mm and 35mm (APS-C equivalent) lenses on the ecosystem I end up going for. Any advise?

Those cameras are very different in price and capability. Get the best you can afford, prioritize lenses over bodies.

I'm in the exact demographic that Fuji is targeting with this camera; to a newbie, this camera seems as a great step up from smartphone photography & it feels that it excels at what it is supposed to offer. Like most small cameras it overheats, and it has time limits. If you need a serious video camera, best look elsewhere.

Very good review as always and I think I have sorted my typing conversion out. Played around with my friends DJI OSMO which he had connected to his phone could not understand the reason for this when his phone has great stabilisation seemed good but I like the Go Pro 7 better looked at the 8 in my local store but no way to replace the lens cover or any other parts if they break looks like I will have to keep my mobile phone canon 7d mk2 and pocket TZ90 a little longer.

It's a shame that Fuji doesn't go all-in on their control scheme with independent dials for each setting (or at least shutter speed). I feel like aspiring photographers would find that much easier and more enjoyable to use than a clunky confusing jumbled mode/drive hybrid dial (ostensibly designed years ago to overcome limitations that are no longer present with a large touch-screen interface).

Have a look at the X-T3, which does exactly what you describe. Fujifilm has been brave enough to remove the PASM dial from many of its higher end models.

Thanks @@MaartenHeilbron , I'm actually more drawn towards the X-T30 since I love the drive dial being more prominent and I don't often change ISO (also due to size and cost). Leaving a PASM dial off a camera aimed at enthusiast photographers could be considered a brave move. But why even introduce this concept to smartphone photographers, especially when the higher end Fujis (which you'd hope the customer would eventually upgrade to) don't even feature a PASM dial? I need to get a red T-shirt with "I DON'T SHOOT PASM" printed in large white letters (1-2 sizes too small, of course).

I would suggest that's not a question I can answer for you. If you are content to shoot with just the LCD, then you don't need the EVF. I prefer a camera with an EVF as it provides additional stability and doesn't get washed out in bright sunlight.
