One great way to trial settings is to shoot some raw images and then use the free X Raw Studio software to “reprocess” them. Requires the camera to be plugged in to the computer as it actually uses the camera's processor to do the work, thereby being the same as if it had been taken that way. You can change nearly every setting, even exposure comp, with the exception of the dynamic range parameter. Output fresh JPEGs and then do a compare and contrast. Highly recommend if you want to try various things out but don’t want to keep changing the in camera settings.

Awesome video! I really appreciate that you walked us through your creative process while in the streets of London. As a beginner (like me), it‘s sometimes a bit frustrating to see awesome shots on Insta and not being able to come up with anything remotely close. Your video shows, that even experts like you need multiple tries and iterate until the shot is perfect.

I used a roll of Portra 160 in the summer and at the same time, shot the same scenes with a DSLR and 50mm lens. It opened up a world of new colours and tints to me. But as you say, it's not cheap. You've inspired me now to try it with film recipes and jpgs. Thanks always for your videos.
@bcegerton2 жыл бұрын
Hi Shaun, do you think the Portrait 160 etc is 35mm beginner friendly? s you say with the prices these days I don’t fancy buying some, even just one roll, if it’s too easy the cock up, The film and developing is a one way ticket to London for me 🤣
@shaunsanders54012 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian. Yes - it's fine for beginners. I bought it because that's the only colour film they had in the shop! However, given the ISO, it works best in good weather.

2:47 - looks quite slow to save the image, is that the Clarity setting impacting processing times in the X100V? did you find this an issue when out photographing or is your style more deliberate and less focussed around taking continuous shots?
@MikeChudley2 жыл бұрын
Yeah using any clarity in the camera slows it down. I hope there is possibly a firmware update to solve this. But I don't find it a problem. My style is definitely more deliberate.

Great video Mike, would love another camera that I could just stick in my pocket or small bag without worrying about which lens to bring. I did have a Canon G7 X, the first edition from new which I won when it was first released, just for filling in a form online for the Independent Newspaper but that got ruined when I lost all my other gear a couple of years ago now and the insurance wasn’t enough after getting the XT3 to get another camera, still not completely sure about the Xt3 and wish I’d have got maybe a used EOS R or Nikon Z6 but such is life.

The thing is with film sims, they look good color wise (sometimes) but they look entirely different to film, its a gimmick really tbh because the highlight roll off clarity and roughness of film literally can not be replicated at all with a film sim. I shoot both film and digital, there 2 different formats, and you cant make one look like the other without it being obvious in my eye that its replication. That being said, it's easier to grade video to look like 16mm or 35mm motion picture as moving image is way easier to make look like film. If you want to make your image look some what like film, clarity needs dropping big time and roughness of grain in LR/PS punched up big time. Then you can get I guess closer.

It’s a film stock. Possibly the most popular 35mm film today. The colours are very popular and skin tones always look clean. But obviously not everybody wants to shoot film so you can recreate the style with film simulations in Fuji cameras

Some custom settings to get a replica feel to film like photos some setting are like white balance, sharpness, clarity and etc.
@marcelostormrage2 жыл бұрын
@@johndeoliveira8476 is it possible to emulate those settings in a different camera? ( canon, sony?)
@neilford52622 жыл бұрын
@@marcelostormrage The short answer is unfortunately, "no, not really", due to a lack of similar customisation options from most other camera brands. Possibly the closest are Nikon's Picture Control Profiles. The longer answer involves discussion about said camera options, sensors and to some extent Fujifilm's advantage having decades of experience making film (the team that used to do that are now responsible for their in camera film simulations apparently), but KZbin's comments really aren’t suited to that kind of discussion unfortunately. You can sometimes get close using presets for either Lightroom or Capture One. Though if people are selling them they have to be careful about using trademarked names like Kodachrome and Portra, for example, so finding good one can be very hit and miss.
@tomislavmiletic_2 жыл бұрын
For my taste this Portra simulation is too much muddy green. Don't misunderstand me, your photos are great, just colours are not to my taste. Personally, if I'm not using some of Fuji's own simulations, I'll go for the Ilford HP5...
