Lovely video. So, the bokeh issue you're experiencing.... I don't think it's documented well enough so you may not know, but that's the leaf shutter causing that. I thought it was anything over 1/400 but I'm reading now that it's anything over 1/500 and the leaf shutter impacts bokeh shapes at wide apertures. If you flick on the ND filter and keep shutter speeds below 1/400 or 1/500 you will see the bokeh take on a totally different character that's significantly less busy. Just a quark of the lens and shutter design.

@@itsmejeremy7 yes. it is a side effect of the leaf shutter they both use. it varies in how obvious it is depending on the background and shutter speed. but it isn't just a busy background thing. it's the way the leaf shutter causes a disturbance in the rendering.

Thanks for the comparison. At 3:12 I think the X100VI just nailed the eye in sharper focus. The eyebrow on the V on the left is sharper, and softer on the VI on the right. But, better AF is kinda like getting a sharper lens. My x100v photos were often slightly out of focus, like this one.

Do you think the lens can’t resolve enough for the sensor? I’ve noticed the raws in LR softer than I expected. I love the camera (my first x100) but expected sharper image. I didn’t buy for sharpness so not a deal breaker but seems they only are using the new sensor for availability / spec sheet bump rather than a massively better image.

Think the AF performance is cut short by the lens of the X100VI. An X-T5 with either the 23 F2 or the 23 F1.4 R LM WR will perform better when it comes to AF. If this is the most important point for you I would go with the X-T5 and one of the 23mm lenses.
@AufKohleGeboren9 ай бұрын
With Fuji it’s still the same when it comes to AF performance, you have to manipulate a lot of the out of the box stuff to achieve the best results. Change AF-C to focus priority, turn of AF+MF assist and so on. Was also the point with the X-T5. After I did all that the AF was much more reliable. With a Sony you take it out of the box and almost always get the best results straight away. Wondering how long it will take Fuji to be at this point. An X-T5 is maybe on par with a Sony 1XR2 from 2016 when it comes to AF.

Ah, again such an enjoyable video! I am not interested in getting the Fuji at this time, but I'm always learning and I like that a lot. Would I be mistaken to notice that if the sensor megapixel difference is barely noticeable on the results it means now the lens is the limitation, not the sensor? And that Fuji should have come out with a sharper lens for the VI to make more of a difference ? Because the added "cropability" may take away a bit of the fixed focal length downside - why I prefer the R8. I do agree with you the IBIS is a good upgrade, it makes the VI so much more useful in low light. As for the noise... the VI has a bit more of it and as on the R7 I believe it tends to throw off AF in low light and you seem to have noticed that a bit?
@JamesReader9 ай бұрын
Thank you as always Philippe! It looks like you are correct, we will need a new lens on the X100 series before we see any major upgrade from the X100v in terms of image quality. I do think the R8 + the 28mm is the king of travel cameras right now, it’s great in every department from cropping, low light, AF and video. I suppose it just lacks the IBIS.

I might have to wait until the end of the year to receive my VI. So sad. It is surprising that there is little difference in the photo quality. One would assume the 40MP sensor would resolve better. The only reason I’m purchasing the VI is the IBIS. That, and the eligible availability of the VI. I’m still waiting for the V I ordered a year ago. Also, the VI is less expensive than the premium placed on the V. I may discontinue my VI order and purchase a Sony A7C. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
