Fujiko Nakaya: Nebel Leben / Retrospective at Haus der Kunst, Munich

“Fujiko Nakaya. Nebel Leben” at Haus der Kunst in Munich, Germany, is a comprehensive survey exhibition of the Japanese artist Fujiko Nakaya. Fujiko Nakaya is best known for her fog sculptures, which are challenging traditional notions of sculpture as they change at every moment depending on temperature, wind and atmosphere. The exhibition at Haus der Kunst features fog sculptures, early paintings, single-channel videos, installations and documentation. The outside sculpture Munich Fog (Fogfall) 10865/II on the eastside of Haus der Kunst as well as Munich Fog (Wave), 10865/I are a new pieces created for Haus der Kunst. “Fujiko Nakaya. Nebel Leben” at Haus der Kunst runs until July 31, 2022.

Simple answer: because it is presented as art. Long answer: Fog can be quite pretty, and it's a pretty uncommon aesthetic within the context of sculpture. The notion of calling something a sculpture when it is not a fixed medium is also kind of strange and intended to make the viewer think/fantasize about whether sculpture is even the right way to describe this fog. These same misting systems are also used in agriculture, where they serve a specific technical purpose and are not presented for their aesthetics. By stripping away the technical purpose, intentionally presenting it for aesthetics only and labeling it as a sculpture, the artist is challenging the viewer to think about aesthetics and the sculptural qualities of an ephemeral medium. And that is what elevates these misters to an art installation. It's art because it is deliberately presented in a way that invites you to experience it as art.
