I think people complaining about SUs song selection would think differently if they watched every other band every single week of the season. Most play the same music all year so if this is your 10th SU battle and 1st or 2nd GSU battle then yeah GSU may get your attention because you never listened to them. You can't expect SU to have a different playlist for every single event, they have a deeper book than almost any band in the SWAC.

Alex C but you have a Good point also. Just felt SU is capable of way more. SU have a Excellent competitive open Band Director. Got Size, writers, top musicians, local fan base, national fan base. "Complacency is the cousin of Failure" I tell my kids that a lot. When I marched DOC said it was his way the SU way. We didn't have a whole lot of say when we wanted to play certain songs. Roy and Eric B were a lil more open. But slowly but surely the mighty S lost some of da edge. Knighton started the upward trend. And then Haymer took the Baton Rouge and currently he is runnin away with it. He cant ever get complacent holdin it and slowly become Dr Greggs. Not that Doc was bad for SU. Cuz he was the best for us at that time. Taught me how to be a professial, student, musician and most importantly a man. We shouldnt even be in a conversation of GSU gettin wit SU. When I marched GSU was never relevant. Only SU can allow any band to be in the same conversation with them. GSU was Good Friday and Garbage Saturday. But SU allowed GSU to be good Friday. Cuz SU didnt match GSU energy till about 45 min into the BOTB. You cant let no body to punch you 5 times till you decide to punch back. You might just get knocked the Fμ€K out. 4 ever Jags. RIP DOC. But tbh we came with a lot of new songs only a few from earlier in the season were played. Plus we had plenty of new songs that didn't even get played. So it's not like we only caught people's attention from not being watched. It's because we had a very different approach that hasn't been seen from us in a while. We came with aggression and Su wasn't playing extra aggressive like they normally would. This was a very interesting class because we both didn't use our normal aproach.

justin hardy Well stated. I also followed SU all this year and I want to say I heard them play about 4 or 5 songs that I havnt heard B4. Gucci Gang. Tank song. Mokensteff song. My 1st love and the song I requested SU play Outstanding. I thought the 2 ol skool songs were str8 🔥. I didnt dislike the other 3 or 4 songs. Just thought they were ok clearly below what my expectation of SU is. GSU upon entering stage had a plan and executed it. On the other hand SU seemed to be the word I use when im dissin GSU( Scramblin ). Too much bad singin. Too many public announcements, not the powerful SU i am accustomed to seeing and hearing, however I am proud they have a license plate recognizing Us. But SU flow was just different to me this battle and GSU flow was smoother. Yall Dancers even held my attention more than the Dolls, which never happened by any other Band dancers other than my HS band majoretts 30 sumthin yrx ago. Ill give yall props for Friday. But yall leaving out wit da band director foolin tryin to teach whip turns was the funniest thing ive ever seen in band history. And SU field show wasnt their greatest but yalls was way worse.. In my opinion. Pleasure principal and im drawin a blank on the other Song, I wanna say Cheryl lynn made it. Gotta to be real(I think) Sounded really bad. But in the spirit of competition you win some you lose some. Its about what you learn in victory and defeat and how you utilize that lesson moving forward. Lil wayne Jay z Eminem Nicki Mobb Deep Nas Lauren Hill Eryjah Badu Jill Scott Chante Moore Wu tang. Rick Ross(Aston Martin music would be the perfect song for them) When I marched for Su. 1. DOC. Scorp1983 its the funnest thing ive been a part of other than me being Network AD for a HS in Dettoit. Got me a scholarship to the best band in the 🌎. Traveled all over the country visiting HBCUs. Got me too many females to speak on. Played in a Superbowl(21). Played in numerous. Mardi gras parades. Played in NCAA basketball tourney. Band HS and.college memories best ever. Tried to get my son to play an instrument. He is a freshman at AAM. He came to SU home comings the past 2 years. Each time I talked him to going and staying At AAM to keep his academic scholarship. We were mad AAM didnt bring their band. They blamed it on Hurricane Nate.. We kicked it. 5 of his friends from AAM came wit us. They had a ball. I.e. parties. Food. Females. 4ever Jags..

We already have them. Not band specific because we do not need to raise funds for our band to travel or do other things. We have alum for that and people pay for Gram to attend events etc. Speaking of hearing, did you hear how the mics were so loud they picked up the director's hand claps as he was counting them off for the Mia X tune? Even with GSU's mics off they still matched SU's volume. This has gone on for many years. Just stop with the mics altogether.

Why I love SU/Human Jukebox 4 ever. But yeah I follow SU every game. Im a student and teacher of Education/Athletics/Music. Been doin it since 1980. In HS I thought I wanted to go to Tennessee State and be in their band. Well guess what never heard of A Southern University. Or for that matter a Human Jukebox early on in my band career. My HS Band Director Mr. Bobby Brown marched in SU band. He took 25 of us from Detroit MacKenzie to Cobo Hall to watch TSU Battle SU our Senior year. We all went TSU and played in their. Homecoming halftime show the year before 1984 my Junior year and we played in their Homecoming Parade. (The Mighty Detroit World Reknown MacKenzie Stags). We talking strt S#!+ to Mr. Brown about how TSU was goin to whoop dat ass. Cuz that was the only HBCU college band we had seen up until that point in 1985. Well the sayin kids dont know S*** is real. SU blew TSU mouth out Friday then Saturday they blew the other side out at the Old Tiger stadium. SU changed 25 young mens minds in 2 days. That next year 25 kids who really did. Not know bleep about college or even SU went to BR and made the Juke. DOC had a special name for us dem Detroyyyyt boys. And we was blowin too and earned and kept our spots on the field. 2 Dancin Dolls from the Mack made the doll line. And it waz kids from other detroit schools too who came. Murray Wright Cody Southfield Lathrop etc. We took Band real serious. Most these schools closed down or under a different name.. luv yall Caprice & Crystal but I digressed... SU /DOC/ Mr. Brown gave us and about 300 ignorant to real life maybe more City Detroit kids a perspective on life we thought never existed or was important. HB started it in 85. LG co86 my band capt 88 LB86 CR86 and RJ86/87 set the path for all 25 of us from 87. And 88 and 89 followed us just as strong and Classes up to now (2017) CO 85 and 86 whooped our ass all in the name of 💘. They got us ready. I had The greatest funnest scariest rewarding memories ever my years in SU band. Ill tell anyone it ain't nothing like marching in the best Band in the 🌎. I love SU. I love the Juke cant no MF tell me its ok for SU to be like other bands or ANY wanna be Da Juke box bands out there cough cough JSU cough is better than the S. TxSU I think gave us our only loss in 87 when they pulled them Kangols out to Im BAD by llcool j and gave a very good overall performance. But 30-1 aint nothin to be ashamed of. And in the years I marched 87,88 NCCA tourney. 90 just The Superbowl. I honestly feel in my heart and would argue wit my band homies to this day .. PVU gave us strong competition 1 yr. And my First year TxsU came to Mumford and. ... I feel embarrassed us. 20-2 or 21-1-1 aint a bad record but please believe me. I felt and many who I marched with felt we should have went 22-0. So again for GSU who we looked at on the level of a decent to good HS band go in to the BOTB Friday . Based on numerous I hope unbiased opinions in favor of GSU. From my Band Captain saying wow GSU looked much improved cuz that is about as much you goin to get from him. and from what I saw and heard from both bands, im goin to stick wit the script. SU didnt seem motivated 100%, our Playbook could have been better and more current. We could have left off Neck Wild thoughts and Drownin. And added Going the Distance to start the B0TB off($end a msg to GSU) add 2 or 3 more current radio songs. And added 2 more ol skool cuts to Outstanding and My 1st love and I promise any body. No Hater, GSU Fan. Unbiased SU or any other School fan could say WoW GSU beat SU. Or GSU looked great or energetic or what ever superlative adjectives you wanna use. I just think we were complacent to start and then we scrambled to get control. SU shouldn't have to scramble fo nobody. I could say SU was way better on Saturday with. Their field show cuz it was visually and audibly fact. GSU sounded and looked like S*** But Friday was unacceptable bcuz it was debatable. SU program is too good for that. Top to bottom. I promise im going to put this to bed for good. Im done posting. Unless somebody bring it to me. I said what I said and feel. SU fans its ok to push the best. People/We pushed DOC back in the day. He just wasnt hearin it. cuz again complacency is the cousin of failure. I hope that kid who reached out to me on that previous post does go play for the Best band in the land next Fall. Derrick Janice. Lots of questions you need to answer for yourself. Are you going far away to be in BR? How are your grades? Is SU goin to pay or help pay your tuition? How well do you play your instrument? Is it a big or small need in SU band for the instrument you play? Are you willing to put the hard time and.work in. Are you a leader or follower? How bad do you want to be in SU band? You can read my post about 4 up from yours based on newer to older post. As a junior I wasnt sure where I wanted to go to school. As a senior it came down to TSU and SU. Both were a long way from my home. But 24 of my friends were also going to SU. My HS Band Director set us all up with scholarships and work study. We all could play. We all fell in love wit The Jukebox. We all were tough. We wasnt going go anywhere but SU. So I dont know. You know yourself. All I can say id be sick today if I had gone to TSU. Its funny My cousin went to TSU and I saw her yesterday. I was just tellin her no disrespect but im. Sooooo glad I went to SU. My son wanted to go to SU. But they didnt offer him any money. However AAMU gave him and academicaly he got his money. He wants to transfer.to SU. Its his choice but I told him look at all the pros and look at all the cons. If it turns out that transfering is best, I Will support either way. Also my brother went to SU that next year but came back home after the Fall semester. And his life turned out ok. I’m loving this new culture they building at Gram.. I give it another year or two before they become upper echelon again. They gave SU legit competition two years str8 now. SU won 4-2 last year cuz Gram had finally had fresh up to date music with some interesting arrangements but lacked power and charisma. This year was actually somewhat debatable as SU seemed throwed off a lil by Gram’s song selection, power, and overall quality. I’m just glad to see the Bayou Classic BOTB be competitive again cuz it’s been a lil min...since like 03’ IMO.

Almighty DaVinci You know what when I started that initial Post. I believe it was the 1st post. 1. I watched the shorter video that was out 1st. Then later I watched the longer video on my regular TV. The 3rd time I watched it on my big screen wit surround sound. 2. Sluggish was probably a bad choice for a word. SU seemed unmotivated starring off when they marched in. 3. GSU came off real aggressive after take me to the King a song I like. 4. The first 2 radio songs SU played I havnt heard before and really like the arrangement. 5. Ive been following SU the past 26 yrs. So ive heard Neck. We dont Give a f××× Wild thoughts 26 krt and the rest of the songs they played this season. 6. Other than Drownin they didnt sound like their powerful selves. 7. GSU had a good current playlist selection 8. They were new to me this year. 9. They didn't sound that bad on quite a few songs and sounded good on Redbone. Tyrone and about 2 other songs. 10. If you can't sing and you have thr best band in the world. Dont sing while they playing , Drownin them out. 11. My crab bro todaywas like man SU been goin hard all year. They was tired. I wish in hell my teams think is ok to just show up. I clown my HS golf team when they on some BS. It seemed like SU just showed up . Those young ladies pursued their band dreams like me and 100 of thousands more. Also, they can set the tone or mood of a song ie SU Can U stand the rain and He loves me ie 1M+ views on You Tube. And numerous other songs SU and other bands played. Plus they real nice to look at and talk too. When I marched we didnt have any females in the band other than DD's. Grambling got some screamers this year. Trumpets sound nice. Southern sounds like they are at the end of their season.... just some sluggish energy in some of their songs they were knocking out the park earlier in the year.... southern won it this year...., but gram has good execution and I hear some areas of aggression.... the arrangements need a new direction though because I want to like it but it’s not complex or creative enough especially if style wise you’re not known for cranking. Arrangements have to be A1. Some were, some were not. Not the best bayou classic, but solid from both.

I would have to agree that the win goes to GSU. SU was sluggish. They did have some good moments but not enough for the win. The battle of the bands is not the place for fundraising announcements etc. Happy for them but save that for the newsletter or Twitter feeds. Since when did SU become international? I also agree with the comment that they were on the Mic too much, especially trying to sing. When you have to get on the Mic that much, it seems like you know you have lost the momentum and the crowd. GSU had the house most of the night as evidenced by the chorus of people singing in the audience. Both bands could have made better music selections at times. Some music on radio today simply does not translate well for marching band arrangements. GSU and SU will always be the best at what they do. No other bands can do what they do.

It's funny cause it's clear that Haymer has toned it down the last few years against Grambling to make it more competitive but still destroys them with musicianship. I will let you know that people were complaining about how Haymer was "disrespectful" to gram in his first couple years. So he was definitely told to tone it down. Remember the a band competition is subjective people can have their opinions all they want about who they think won the botb, but it still wouldn't hurt the band's recognition around the country as a top band. However, being a former Jag football player, the game is objective, win the game. It is what it is, you win some, and you lose some. A couple years back we were beating gram like a step child, but the tables have turned. It goes back and forth.

GSU sounded a hot ass mess.they had good song selection but arrangements were horrible..Southern won this as usual...crowd was quiet every time after grambling played...southern brought more excitement...grambling is just played out!

Rodrico Neely from a #SU band alumn...grambling was better when I was in band from 99 -03...they've really fell off over the years...SU sounded better as usual ..that's y their ratings have dropped so much and were still the G.O.A.T...

It sounded really good.. And when I listened to Call Tyrone a 2nd time on my tv and not my phone, I changed my opinion on that song too. My band Capt from 88 said the same about many of GSU songs. He still feels that SU clearly won battle. However we both felt GSU are much improved from previous years. They are going to need to get larger. And improve their arrangements to be considered in the higher echelon of Bands. JSU PVU very formidable. 4ever Jags Stags Wolves Fall87 RIP Doc Haymer keep the machime goin.

Edward Bevels Redbone sounded pretty good to me. Had a certain Swag..
