Without looking ill guess their stats were similar but the difference between the 2 is one is facing constant double teams the other is being single blocked on every play. This is the part of football that people miss when they stat chase. How many defenders on your defense is the other team game planning against? Before we had Hutchinson & McNeil now you add Reader who must be doubled.

@@florida1289 Hutch was also being doubled all year (led the league in most double teams per game). The lions now have 2 of their front 4 guys that are double team worthy. One of those 2 are going to have to be blocked by one man, so it's definitely an upgrade

You missed the addition of UFL kicker Jake Bates. He kicked 3 60+ FGs in 10 games, including a UFL record 64 yarder. He even kicked a 70 yarder in practice. Plus he’s used to playing in Detroit, coming from the Michigan Panthers.

Maybe they are factoring in injury but Reader is a MASSIVE upgrade in terms of talent over Jones (who I did like having on the team, but he's a replacement level player ultimately). That feels like more of an upgrade compared to Zeitler over Jackson (which is also an upgrade, but still).

Reportedly Levi has been breaking out in training camp too, so expecting a big season from him. Id also love to see Daurice Fountain play some snaps as from what I’d heard he was convinced by teammates to keep pursuing football after wanting to quit. Its crazy how apparently he’s been breaking out at 28 when he’s been going from practice squad to practice squad. I really wanna see some game success from him

Don’t tell me that getting DJ Reader is a Push and not an Upgrade over Benito Jones. Also at the edge/sam lb position we got rid of Harris and the Okwara bros, got Houston back from injury, signed Davenport and added Wingho in the draft. Paschal dropped down to 250lbs and it’s his first off season fully healthy looking to take a jump along with Levi O who is finally healthy and is back up to a strong 300lbs. Jack Cambell, Barnes, Jamo, Kerby, Iffy, Gibbs, Laporta, Branch, Hutch, Alim, Sewell are all players that should take another Jump forward this year. Lions Cheifs SuperBowl and Lions win it.

DJ reader is going to be the biggest difference on this defense. It'll be most noticeable, especially stat wise, with the linebackers. Anzalone has always had amazing instincts and he passed that to Barnes. Campbell will get to play his natural Mike position and use his coverage skills. Reader will be opening lanes for lots of TFLs
