I like that you put time into the snare bottom. I'm used to seeing people get rid of it all together. But I like what it does to the snare here.

Thanks. From my experience it is the mic that gives the snare the proper character.

Ales. This is excellent content as usual. Thank you for your clear explanations and examples. I continue to learn so much from you. I have taken your mixing course and it was fantastic as well! Michael

Thanks, Michael, for the comment on the video and the course. Glad you enjoyed both.

Thanks for very nice video Aleš (as usualy). All is clear but tellme how to translate those settings (epecially SN BT gate settings) to a song where drummer uses brushes? Are used to turn the gate off for such songs or use top mic only (no useful material from SN BT mic while brushes used)? BTW Have to say I hate the 470Hz ringing thats still there (8.5dB cut is apparently not enough) :D

Making separate channel presets can be used in that situation. When brushes are used, the rest of the kit is also not blasting at full volume, so removing the gate should not be a problem. And I get that that frequency might still be a bit annoying, but it is also the defining characteristic for that snare. So I am not totally removing it, just putting it under control. And remember, all of this is very subjective- other engineers might have a completely different approach and set the sound differently. If it sounds good to you, then it is good. 🙂

please can you make videos of the remain instruments lile guitars and also a video on vocals (speech and singing)

I am trying to get a hold of a multitrack that would include those things and be licence free (with out copyright claims) for that demonstration. Once I get it, we can get to mixing! ;)

I’ve been trying out your workflow on some multi tracks that I have. I’ve noticed that in mine that low end from the snare bottom that is well presented in your video is really overpowered by the kick in my multi track. So I prefer to filter out most of the low in this case. I guess it will depend on the drum kit and microphones used if bringing out that snare bottom low end is feasible.

Yes, it is all content and genre dependent. If it sounds right to you, then whatever you are doing is probably working. Thanks for trying out the workflow, hope it comes handy one day.
