Love this! As an Iowa resident, Dubuque has a special place in my heart. We visit two or three times a year. The history of Dubuque and the surrounding area is incredible. Thanks for the video!!!!

You missed a key part of Dubuque Millworks: FARLEY AND LOETSCHER MANUFACTURING COMPANY. Once the largest mill working plants in the world. Farley and Loetscher began humbly on January 1, 1875 The company in 1930 was an employer of between eight hundred and nine hundred people. (20) The seven company buildings covered five city blocks. Each of the buildings, except for three warehouses, were connected by bridges that crossed over the streets. Employment peaked at 1,250.

We're from Chicago, and my wife and I absolutely love Dubuque, Iowa. Its been a few years since we last visited, and we are looking forward to returning this Summer in our first vacation since before the pandemic. This was a great video - we'll be trying out Cremer's!

Grew up here. My father was an original employee at John Deere Dubuque Tractor Works. Used to get Turkey Dressing sandwiches at Jack Savary's on Dodge. He gave the recipe to my mother and to this day, 1 Turkey is dedicated towards this Dubuque Iowa delicacy. Have yet to find someone who doesn't like them. Was taught right and wrong in this Town.

Really enjoy your Videos. Dubuque is my Hometown and we now live in Fort Collins, Colorado. Also Loved the video on Rockford, Illinois. Rockford was my Fathers hometown but back when we were growing up it wasn’t a good place to visit. Keep up the great videos and really enjoy the host !! Thank you.

10 years ago I told a coworker from central Iowa that I thought Dubuque was nice. He laughed at me and said there is a bar on every block and said the city was run down. Well, I hope it has improved since then. It’s a place with tremendous potential anyway.
@Firguy
@Firguy 11 ай бұрын
He's not wrong about the bars and it's definitely not a negative because you're always just a few steps away from getting a Captain n' Coke and a styrofoam box of cheese curds. I'd advise that you'd stay away from Paul's Tavern, though, the place has these creepy taxidermied animals and the bartenders look like they came back from the dead. Definitely not like those trendy hipster joints that have been popping up lately.

@@Firguy what an ignorant comment. Pauls is absolutely loved by residents. Great prices and the burgers are famous. If you'd rather pay $14 for a pint of hipster IPA thats all you

I have been thinking about making a channel like this, before I discovered you! And here I thought I was being unique. I am in Iowa, but about 150 miles south of Dubuque. I think mine would be more on history, and wouldn't be as many interviews. But nonetheless, great job!

The headgear shown on Julien Dubuque in so many pictures is a romanticism derived from pictures based on the thought of a “French fur trader” without much actual basis on the man himself. The old jail museum in Dubuque has an entire exhibition on more historically accurate history of Julien, including a reconstruction of his face from his skull (and he looks a lot more like what you’d expect a businessman of the time to have looked like)

In the 70s and 80s, Dubuque was closer to 75% and maybe as high as 85% Catholic. Outside of the city in the county, it was around 90 - 95% Catholic. It is the only seat of a US Archdiocese that is not located in a major metropolitan area. I have a feeling that a lot of that difference now are people raised Catholic who just no longer identify.

Dubuque is on the Mississippi but what the story doesn't say is that there is not 1 in of beach or any area where you can go into the river from shore. Now, if you get a boat and pay ridiculous licencing fees you can go to an island were they maintain the sand. I am a river rat but they did their best to limit us.

Not true. Finleys landing is open beach to the public and you can drive just a few minutes north of town.

The construction of the floodwall eliminated the beaches that once existed. It was completed in 1973 and the Mississippi hasn't come close to breaching it since. Losing some beaches us a small price to pay to keep your city from flooding every two or three years.
