Ippo pushed him near the end. But he was utterly dominated this entire fight. It was a good way to stop him from getting to Ricardo and getting slaughtered. It would basically be repeating Date’s story. Losing to Alf showed that he didn’t have an actual goal on the world stage. And that half assed motivation wasn’t gonna work with Alf. Who wanted to take on Ricardo a third time.

I honestly believe it, even Martinez sparred with Ippo and mentioned that he feels like whole world is revolving around him and even was mentioned few times that all people that Ricardo fought so far (Date, Alfredo and Sendo with Sendo fight probably coming in few chapters) pushed all of them to the limits and he even won against Sendo twice.. But what I do feel is that Sendo is going to push Ricardo the most, why? Because before Sendo gets to fight Ricardo, Ricardo is going to fight against Wally first. So in that fight I believe Sendo will learn that fighting like an animal is not going to do anything. I think he will learn something really important from that fight and have the best match of his life but still lose and I think after that fight, Ippo will make a slow comeback to the ring after seeing his rival lose. But either way, Ippo is surely making a comeback. It's justa matter of time, I mean after all, manga is called "Hajime no Ippo!"

Ippo's fighting style is all wrong, he just pushes forward eating punches and throwing nothing but power shots, hooks, uppercuts, liver blows, and overhands. He doesn't jab to measure range and step in, he doesn't use feints, he doesn't go for punching combinations, he doesn't use footwork to close in and out from different angles, nothing, he relies on one solid hit and then tries again, very repetitive. It's a miracle Ippo's career hasn't ended by this point, boxers who rely only on toughness and guts usually don't get very far, you also need to be smart. It's all on Kamogawa, I think he taught Ippo outdated boxing.

not realy. in one of the chapter after he retired he talked about he only used few skills. that became predictable because of that but regardles what your saying his strong point is getting inside the pocket. the only thing ippo needed to do was blend his skills with the basics to remove his predictable behavior.

Perhaps if Ippo had hammered away at Alfredo's arms while his guard was up, he would've damaged them enough to where they could no longer be used in the fight. Or he could've landed some devastating body shots before delivering some knockout blows. Headhunting is ill-advised when your opponent implements a lot of head movement and footwork. Overall, he should've fought some lower-ranking contenders before taking on Alfredo, just for the sake of fine-tuning his technique and adding some new ones to his arsenal.

I hadn't read this fight since it was first released, and I only realize now how many clean hits Ippo took to the head. I had also forgetten how unsure he was about his boxing. Things were definitly wrong, he wasn't ready yet. I hope we will soon see him come back. Takamura mentionned "running out of time" in the last chapters, and I'm sure he was thinking of the coach. After Takamura's match, if Ippo talks to him about it, he may choose to go back in the ring. Or maybe we'll have to wait for Sendo vs Ricardo. Either way, Ippo has now become a second and a sensei. He has learned a lot, and has gotten physically stronger. There isn't a lot left to do outside of the ring for him. So it shouldn't take too long before he comes back (even though George Morikawa really is taking his time).

Ippo was seriously lacking experience, mentality and versatile skills compared to Alfredo who only lost against Ricardo Martinez at that time in the whole world. I felt that it was somewhat early for Ippo to go for World no: 2 ranker Alfredo at that time. You can't relax even the slightest against an expert counter puncher, like Alfredo. Still, it was a crowd pleasing and intense match.

So he needs to improve his style. 2. The author wants to show the reality of this industry. Even the champion might loss. 3. To show an epic fight. Not really, He was still an experienced World Ranker and has been in one good World Title fight his first one doesnt count since his nerves got to him and got knocked out first round. Alf is a great fighter, good instincts aswell, well rounded. If you think how he stopped it was bullshit then Ricardo stopping it with jabs was bullshit. And even if it was his first time seeing it It is just momentum haymaker hooks. And one factor why he isn't scared is he's snapped and was really angry, towards the last stretch of this fight he could block out fear by becoming more and more angered but in turn lose himself and his amazing Boxing intelligence. Even if Alf's experience with it was a total of 0 The demsey is not particularly a complex technique to pull off so it's easy to see how to stop it. With that logic then Sawamura or Sendo stopping it by the step back counter and Dashing to stop the pendelum even though they had no experience for it is bullshit aswell. Point is they are not dumb and they can observe it well and come to a conclusion and make a strategy for it on the fly, Alf, a world ranker can simply do that.

If Makunouchi wasn't always in such rough rights (his most recent ones being Wally and then Kojima, both having definitely contributed largely to his damage/retirement) then I feel he would have won this despite Alfredo leading him around all those rounds with little damage accumulated. Because I can see multiple instances in this fight Ippo's range just wasn't right, and in the end he truly burned out right before he could claim victory. I understand why he gets beaten on so bad, its just so heartbreaking to realize of he wasn't damaged he more than likely would have defeated Gonzalez
