Another great video! And that crossing-traffic contrail around 2:21:00 was so cool!

Enjoy your visit! It's a very nice place to be around! If you have time, highly recommend the ferry across to Tallinn, another really nice city!

I have just come across your YT channel and really enjoyed the quality photography of this flight, thank you :-) I am intrigued to know how you managed to get the complete Operational Flight Plan (OFP) for this trip? Well done and please note that I have now subscribed to your channel!!

Thanks for watching! Well first of all I definitely do not have access to the airline's flight plans. What I did was to compare our flight path profile on Flightradar24, then I replicated the path as close as possible on the flight planning website Skyvector.com, to get the whole route including SIDS and STARS. It may be off a little bit, but it's close. Also with a Gold subscription on Flightradar24 there is the option to display airways, navaids, and waypoints superimposed on the flight radar map.

Hi, thanks for the feedback and all noted re: the OFP. I'm not a real world pilot, but do use XP11 and MSFS2020 in conjunction with Simbrief, Skyvector, Navigraph etc., to prepare my own flight plans :-)

Around 5:25…Any idea on why they started an engine at the gate?
@naturallyherb2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was wondering about that too

@@naturallyherb Hmm, normally they start one on the push and the other one later during taxi. I first thought that it can't be that the APU is un-serviceable because this is a required redundancy item in flight. Then again, I'm no A350 pilot and this was a short, non-ETOPS flight. So perhaps it is a "go" item on the MEL in that case. Or perhaps just something else...it's really unusual to start at the gate. Great video, again! Your camera work, the little info bits and sound capture are some of, if not the BEST of these type of videos on KZbin. Keep it up!

@@iamra_n3189 If the flight operates between two major airports that have all the required ground equipment (which this is the case), then the aircraft can be dispatched with the APU INOP, in which case an air start unit would enable it to start engine 2, then after the pushback use the bleed air from that to start engine 1. In case of engine failure then windmill starting is possible, as is using the ram air turbine to give some power to other aircraft systems.

@@naturallyherb Ah right, I understand. It's definately a good thing to use GSE air conditioning rather than the APU. It's standard practice in many places around the world and especially in Europe. Given the time spent at the gate after that first start, I'd guess you're right that in this case it was an INOP APU. In the Dash8-Q400 I used to fly, the APU was not enabled for use in flight. It did supply bleed air, but only for air conditioning on the ground. DC power was available from the batteries, engine & APU DC GENs and that is what started those big turboprops, not bleed air. And this battery power was the only case available if both engines failed in flight. Of course, so rare and therefore no need for an airborne APU on such a short haul aircraft. Without an APU, I don't see how a large jet like the A350 can air start & relight it's engines if they both failed. I really didn't think windmilling was enough to get the actual HP spool going enough. Maybe enough air does get through the all the drag from that giant LP fan! I can understand a 787 doing it as they use electric starters, but I'm only assuming the big batteries would have enough oomph. I'd expect they would. That's really interesting about windmilling air relights and I'm looking forward to learning more as I'm coming up on GTEs in my EASA conversion studies. My previous studies were over a decade ago so either I've forgotten about that aspect or it wasn't part of the syllabus.

@@naturallyherb Hey, I couldn't wait so had to look ahead! Seems that windmilling relight is a thing! Quite the abnormal manoeuvre though! But APU might be a requirement on ETOPS...so LHR to HEL no problem!
