I totally agree with your conclusion. I choose Fuji for it’s size / weight (a real blessing with my back issues) and tactile experience. I do however slightly prefer full frame but it wasn’t enough of a difference to warrant carrying a larger and heavier kit.

You put that really well. What works for one person may not work for another so I can appreciate the reasoning you put into this video. I shot full frame Nikon for over 10 years. After getting a Fuji for personal use I eventually tried it professionally due to the size/weight. Now I’ve completely swapped over and for my workflow I would consider that an upgrade! Great Video!

The EVF on the Z8 is incredible. It's completely changed my shooting experience, affecting both how often I use the EVF and how much I enjoy it when I do. It gets extremely bright, as well, which is so helpful when shooting outdoors in bright sunlight.

Totally agree. It’s all subjective. I switched from a full frame Nikon D610 to Fujifilm X-T1 and I definitely saw a slight downgrade in image quality. Especially in terms of noise when brightening shadows. But the small size and weight of both the camera and the lenses, and the physical dials, made me never look back. Now I use X-T5 and it’s fantastic. I sometimes DO miss the sensor in my old Nikon, but that is the only thing I miss from it.

@sacredxgeometry
@sacredxgeometry 9 ай бұрын
The Nikon ZF is a nightmare of a camera, lol. It’s hilariously outclassed in many ways. The sensor and tech is great, but everything else is virtually inferior about the camera because it’s a modified tribute to the Nikon FE from 1977. SD card in the battery door, only one SD card slot, terrible ergonomics, and no User custom buttons. The position of the dials at the top is great for people over the age of 40 who grew up with film cameras, and enthusiasts who want to…pretend they’re shooting a film camera? Flippy screen is nice though! You’d be hard pressed to call this camera worth traveling with as you need a 3rd party grip which also clips in the way of the battery door. The camera works against you in so many ways, against convenience, and you don’t want that in a camera. Just het the Z7-Ii for the price, or a Z8 if you actually have the money. - someone who owned both.

In bright day light yes, when you go in darker situation like most pros shooting events and wedding etc it is different. This is the 4k camera, but when the successor to the z6, will come out you will get a 2k camera that will surely have perhaps a little less speed etc but image wise will be less noisier than even the z8 and buy cheaper 1.8 primes or 2.8 zoom that are quite competitive in price. You would need 1.2 primes and 2.0 zooms in apsc to compare.

@danielvilliers612 with modern AI/production tools low light is a non-issue as you can effectively increase the dynamic range through AI. Crop sensors in modern times make more sense. The needed end result really depends. I shoot a R6 and X-H2, the R6 is for paid work headshot/portrait and H2 is for personal stuff/artistic shoots. I really think the XT5/H2 can handle 95% of most people’s needs. The overall rig weight and cost has me leaning towards Fuji. 45-61mp FF definitely have their place, not denying that but APSC from 5 years ago is not APSC today, that is like the higher end FF closed the gap on Medium Format.

You are the perfect person to lend an opinion! I've used everything but primarily Nikon, finally bought a Z6ii after fw 2.0, but sold it for an A7iv for glass $ and AF performance. I'm looking hard at Fuji right now with their 3rd party Tammy/Sigma support... I have a family of 8 and all my youngsters shoot used/older Finepix Bridge cameras and we love the menus and OOC JPEGs... How is the Lowlight performance on the Fujis? With the Nikon ZF now available and more 3rd party/affordable glass, Nikon is still a compelling option (Assuming the Z6iii has what the ZF has with AF/3D etc.). Adapted F glass and FTZ is also a very viable option with used Z5's for my kids... but Fuji is smaller, more fun in some ways. I'm looking specifically at the X-H2, a used X-T4, and maybe an X-s10 to start. Anyway, since you have shot everything I have, I'd love your 2 cents on it. Thanks!

@@cohoonatubedude I know it’s old but I will give it a shot. I have owned Nikon, Sony, and fuji. All this to end up back with Nikon. Own z9, z7, z6. Have owned xt3, sh1, a73, a7r3. I just couldn’t with Sony. Looked good on white skin but took work on darker skin. Loved Fuji but felt I was giving up a little bit of that full frame look i like. I found no problems in low light or noise with fuji. Now with the zf out I am going to sell the z6/z7 for that. Make that my everyday camera and second shooter at events/weddings if needed. After that I am sitting still for 10 years. These cameras meet more than my needs. Keep in mind I never buy new. I buy gently used from a trusted seller. Well the 50 1.2 I got new. Family of 8 let’s see. If everybody needs a camera I would go 1 to 2 of the newer cameras (at used price). Say two zf if you like the sexy llook of it. I would go as cheep as I could after that in the used market. Z7/z6. Then z50s for the rest. If you are good with the apsc look then you can get all 1.8 glass and also some apsc glass. Fuji is not a bad route but if you ever wanted to get back into full frame you are either working in for two systems or you have to sale and rebuild. If f the budget is higher I would substitute a z8/z9 in there. I would skip the z6ii/z7ii all together as I feel the AF is no better than the z6i/z7i. Also the z6iii is on the way. When that hits I think it will drive down the zf price used. That’s when I plan to strike. Also you can go a few dslrs for the younger ones in your families and used the glass they have adapted. Then you can go cheaper full frame with them. I am thinking d600/d700. Hell they also giving away d3s/d4 right now. Good luck!!!

But at the end when I finished processing my photos and blend them together, I can't tell you anymore from which camera I took the photo. Autofocus from the Sony is much better. The discussion about sharpness from lenses needs a new standard in my opinion. My Sony 35mm 1.4 is super sharp but I love the sharpness from my old Fuji 18mm F2. Great discussion! One of the key reasons that you noted for using smaller cameras is fun, which is often overlooked. Bigger is not usually better in that case, and frankly results I’ve seen with smaller sensor cameras are as good or occasionally better (subjective) if used in only social media. Probably not the case if used for professional work, but I’ve seen many (endless almost) comparisons of FF to APSC and MFT on KZbin as a an example and not uncommon for the smaller sensor to look as good (in reasonable light) which makes a lot of sense given the limits placed on social media. Often even action cameras the best choice, say if vlogging. That said, if you enjoy doing the creative work with any camera then that’s the tool for you. Last, I’m always challenged by folks referencing the term AI in cameras; at best it could be considered weak AI, though wait a year or so and that may not be the case. May not need a camera very often, unless it’s for fun!

Very fair comparison! I was in Sony’s full-frame system for years and I realized two things: First off, the results were stunning when edited in LR, not so stunning wenn taking jpegs. I found some good settings for jpegs ooc but never was really satisfied. And secondly, I just had not that much fun shooting Sony. It was more like playing with a computer then with a camera. That is why I tried some Fuji-bodies. And last year I completely changed to Fuji-X. The fun is back, the results (with good glass like the 18mm f1.4 and since some weeks with the X-T5) are really good, even as jpegs ooc, which is one of my main reasons for changing my gear. I am a bit more than just a hobbyist. I take pictures of events, do portraits and everyday shots for a homepage but am not paid directly for that. My time is limited so I am grateful for the excellent results of Fuji’s jpegs ooc and with the X-T5 I feel like nothing is missing compared to the A7III I used. Sure you can expose raw better with full-frame-sensors and there is simply not such thing like an 85mm f1.2 on aps-c. For real pro-work a full-frame system means more possibilities. However i am very satisfied with Fuji-X in almost every regard so I do not regret changing. Cheers!

Same here. I had the XT5 for awhile but went back to Nikon Z too. At iso 125 it’s ok, dynamic range is alright but when you move over 125 not that great especially with the xtrans sensor and its noise worm artifacts. And when you compare lens prices it’s not even an argument because the Nikon 1.8’s are simply amazing and cheaper than Fuji equivalent. I still love Fuji X system but I don’t like their xtrans sensors, they are really demanding on the software and computer.

Yep, the difference is not when you are in ideal conditions but when the lighting or more importantly lack of it situations. There is two obvious advantage where the FF is better and not represented in this test, one is the low light and secondly bokeh. I mean here we are in full midday light and secondly enough space to be able to compensate for the shallow deptg of field. In a bar or a wedding, you won't have same space to backoff if you want.

Man, that last whisper... It's never ending : manufacturers are producing tools that just are better and better, and I'm so into this (enjoyable) journey of constantly testing gear. I try to convince myself that there's a tool of all trades, but it's becoming so obvious : there's not. Different tools for different jobs. As you greatly said. This test is complicated. We are testing the Nikon at 1.8 and the Fuji at. 1.2? a 2.25x faster lens on the Fuji (the Northrup factor). On the other hand, the Fuji lens is just slightly more expensive than the Nikon, but that is a brand difference. With the light conversion, they should look almost identical, but one can put an adapted 1.4 lens on the Nikon or a 1.2 after you sell something. We also did not test low light. Finally, it's the price. Good video.

You still need to multiply the crop sensors lens by the crop factor. That includes the aperture too. But he should have used a similar lens on both. Really liked the comparison, and definitely see the big difference in flexibility with the files. I'm a Fuji shooter, and for the way I use the system, I'm fine not having that flexibility- I tend to be going for a certain look out of camera and only do a little bit of tweaking in post to fix exposure and contrast the way I want it... And I think that's also the real compelling reason to buy into the Fuji system- the amount of customization in camera. I don't see buying a crop body now except for Fuji given whats happening with the market, Canon stuff is getting way expensive, Sony isn't really doing anything with APS-C, and Nikon has limited options too. And I think you'd really have to want the "Fuji Experience" even then- Buying an X-T5 with the 16-55 is more expensive as I write this than buying a Nikon Z6-II and the 28-75 2.8...

That's the biggest issue with Fuji. I love Fujifilm, but the price is hard to justify. This wasn't an issue because you could get used gear for pretty cheap but even that has been inflated. Something I actually didn't anticipate with all the new gear is missing an optical viewfinder. I actually picked up an old Nikon DSLR and have really been enjoying it. The 90mm is an unbeliveable lens .. the colors are stright ooc perfect .. the resolution is so mindblowing .. that I never miss my Nikon gear when going out at night .......... Fuji Universe is perfectly made to satisfy the best of both worlds: the fun-factor an ease of use + fantastic lenses of an APS-C + the richness in colors and dynamics "beyond fullframe" .......... Coming from a D750 + Nikon/Tamron Lenses .. switching to Nikon mirrorless never satisfied me, even if the mentioned advantages of FF over APS-C still exist in 2023. Size and weight are my top priorities. I find people in general are more comfortable around smaller gear. That's great for good photos and video. Price is a Huge factor for me since everything seems to be going up. If you work exclusively in a studio, I would recommend full frame. But if you are on the go, run and gun, weddings, events, shooting video, parties, outdoors, urban, then Fujifilm is a must. For video, I'm thinking of making a MFT rig, just because I want to keep the weight down. The smaller cameras are just more pleasurable to use. But I do believe full frame is necessary. If a client specifically requests full frame, then what are you gonna do? Many ad companies, magazines, and other professions want full frame, so if you want to get paid then it's probably best to own both full frame and apsc - IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT!

I hear you barking big dog. I shot Fuji for ten years and had all of the APSC bodies and most of the lenses. Once I started getting more bookings and my work was more demanding and serious, I unfortunately had to ditch Fuji and I've moved over to two Z6ii bodies and 5 of their lenses. I really miss the dials and buttons and real aperture rings on the Fuji. As you say, the smaller lighter kit, and here in Australia, the gear is literally half the price of what I paid for my full Nikon kit earlier on this year. Having said that though, it was the best thing I ever did. My clients noticed the difference - not only me. If I don't totally nail the exposure (particularly in high ISO), I can still pull up shadows on my Nikon files. When I tried that with the Fuji, the image would often turn to custard. The benefits really are quite big. That is coming from somebody who did not want to change. When I shoot wedding receptions in dark rooms or gigs after dark, I stride in with confidence knowing that my NEF files will come out looking great. In my Fuji lifetime, I kind of crept in like an imposter, knowing that these high ISO RAF files are not going to be looking very good! All I've got to do now is try to afford the Z8 (7K body only here in Auss)!!

On my IPhone 12 Pro Max “tiny” screen, the Z8 files combined with the 85mm 1.8 look more pleasing to me. I am recent owner of the Z8 but I am a bit concerned about global sharpness when zoomed in, even at lower iso and high shutter speeds shot at F2.8-F8. As far as colour goes, Fuji has it right outside the box! I think people get too obsessed about every little detail in editing. Part of the reason I think people don’t get better at their picture taking, is because there inside editing too much and not outside making images! Or they spend too much time, talking about equipment instead of taking more images. But then again, I’m not a pro and I’m retired. Just observations after doing street photography for over six years.

Oh - all so true! BUT…… most of us aren’t pro shooters doing portrait or product shoots. A couple of different comparisons might give very different conclusions. A Fuji X-T5 + a Viltrox 75mm f1.2 - cost about £2200 in the UK, a great portrait set up. Spend the same on a FF camera and lens THEN do the comparisons for IQ and versatility. Or, X-T5 with 100 - 400mm +1.4 TC (F8) for wildlife. On FF an 800mm lens needed for comparison. For small birds and animals alarge DoF is usually needed so the FF would have to be stopped down. Either slower shutter or higher ISO to compensate with a loss of IQ as a result. Think of the weight to carry on the hills or through the forests here too. Either of these scenarios is anyone still betting on the FF as the better system? Final thought on this. The Canon 7D, unlike the 1D, 5D or 6D is a crop sensor with a low pixel count. It’s marketed for wildlife and sports because it extends the range of lenses for these purposes. It’s ‘horses for courses’, personally, as a hobbyist, I shoot a couple of Fuji bodies with a good range of lens options and can cover a wide range of different types of photography. I don’t need or want a full frame camera.

If I set the A7RV to APS-C mode it will produce 26MP images, and I can use all five of my APS-C lenses. Imagine having all of the features of the A7RV with the small and light APS-C lenses. I'd have a bunch of great updated features and specifications of the A7RV such as better color science, faster mechanical shutter, better IBIS better white balance, better auto focus, better EVS. It's not that I give up using the FF 61pixel mode, I do have one FF lens and would plan to buy a Sony 24-70 2.8 mark II. Best of both worlds.

Im curious if you use linear conversion curves on both files if you would find the same thing. The fuji “simulations” or color curves sometimes really screw up the color curve on the file to the point where you can’t get certain color or tone effects on the file no matter how you try. I shoot both Nikon Z7 and Fuji X-T5 and I found the same thing but have determined at least some of it has to do with the conversion curves used on the raw file. Try converting the Nikon and the Fuji file both with the linear curve on the raw conversion and see if you get the same results.

I think one thing more people really need to know more about regarding the Fuji image quality: It's much much better in Capture One. Lightroom and ACR/Photoshop are incapable of properly handling the raw files. It's a very simple test to see for yourself. Zoom in 100-150% on the same image in each software and you'll see that there's a huge huge quality difference that affects color corrections, and most of all, sharpness. Sharpening Fuji files inside of Lightroom, for some reason, is quite ugly looking.
