I love seeing the layout of your fall garden. I'm very interested in growing sweet potatoes so that was helpful to see in progress.

Northern Utah gardens were tough this year! I planted 2 zucchini and finally gave up on one and pulled it out. The other gives me zucchini now and then. TERRIBLE! My tomatoes are great thanks to shade cloth. Peppers are OK and cukes are just coming on (again thanks to shade cloth). I literally had everything shaded when the temps went over 98. Wind didn't help either and we have had a LOT of wind here. I'm in farm land so no wind breaks. All in all I'm happy, but didn't get the beets and parsnips I was hoping for. Will plant beets again and carrots tomorrow and see what happens. May be too late, but worth a try. My chickens got around my barrier and took the carrots and one box of beets, I had. But they did keep the grasshopper population under control so I didn't make them into chicken dinner. Glad to see even the "experts weren't perfect. Gives me hope.for next year.

The heat was a big factor for us this year too! I've hardly had any beets so far this year and had to replant last weekend.

Our garden this year has definitely been a lesson in patience with the heat and wind. I have managed to harvest a good amount of kale, oregano, chives and parsley and we had a good crop of onions. Fall raspberries are gearing up, which is nice. Now waiting for the tomatoes and peppers to ripen and to dig our potatoes. 🤞🤞 Zone 5B central Utah mountains

Your garden is doing really well even with the hot temps you've had. This is my 2nd year actually gardening with a variety of plants. In the past I only did tomatoes which have always done well. This year has been a struggle with all of my plants with the exception of collards, swiss chard and lettuce. My tomatoes and peppers not doing well. Only got 2 small zucchinnis and no yellow squash. Planted garlic for the first time last fall and got a good harvest from that. I have learned some things that I will do differently next year. The strawberries I did in a small container raise bed did nuch better than those in the larger raised bed. They didn't do well last year either. I am disappointed but not discouraged will try again next year.

That's the beauty of gardening. There's always next year! I've learned a lot this year about melons. I've never really had an problem growing them in the past, but this year I got them too close to other plants and they haven't thrived because of the lack of sun.

Great tour! I wish I could get zucchini to grow. I transplanted two plants and only harvested one zucchini. 😂 Glad to see all the sweet potato vines. We planted 60 slips this year since we love SP's.
@StoneyAcresGardening4 ай бұрын
You might try direct sowing the seeds. Squash family plants are big fans of being transplanted so they may be suffering from transplant shock and not producing.

Thank you AJ and Rick for the tour it looks amazing. Ain't no embarrassment, I try experimenting sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't it fun trying though. I really like your pumpkin/squash cattle panel it's really cool.

We love that cattle panel too. I'm just bummed that it shaded our watermelon and we aren't going to get many (if any melons this year)

Love seeing others Gardens for motivation, ideas. Good to also hear the weather issues others are having too. We had a cold spring and a colder than usual June. Then the hottest first week of July i remember having in a long time. Then it got kind of mild after that. Weve had rain since Saturday and it isn't suppose to get better until thursday next week. So weird weather here in western WA

We had a really cold spring, followed by a super hot June, July, and early August. We are finally starting to get some 80s again and it has been nice.

I have five zucchini plants in different locations and only harvested about two zucchinis all summer 😂 my garden was a failure this year. The only thing that did good this year for me was tomatoes, cucumbers, lemongrass and peppers.

Nice garden! You need some sweet corn planted the hill drop method too. Looks like AJ does an excellent job keeping the weeds and grass out of the garden. Yes, do more tours and tell what the varieties are. It's neat and fun seeing other's gardens progress. Thanks!

Sweet corn is so cheap to buy at the local farmers market and we LOVE growing our own popcorn, so we have opted to skip the sweet corn in the garden and just do the popcorn.

Thanks for the garden tour. What are you doing besides trap plants to control your squash bugs and tomato hornworms?
@StoneyAcresGardening3 ай бұрын
Hand picking and hunting. Especially early in the season really helps to keep them down. I haven't seen any horn worms this year (but we don't normally have a big problem with them) and I haven't seed squash bugs since early June.

Your watering system has the holes facing the ground?
@StoneyAcresGardening4 ай бұрын
It depends on the location and the crop, but for most of the garden it's just the opposite. The holes point up, and just kind of bubble the water out.
@meshab60494 ай бұрын
The bell pepper plant took forever to put on flowers and when it did it only put on 4. Out of the 4 peppers, I took 3 because something chewed holes in one of them which was still a baby. The Hungarian hot wax and banana peppers are pumping out like crazy and the chili pepper plant just started producing this week.
@StoneyAcresGardening4 ай бұрын
Our bells didn't do really well. We still have some time so I'm hopeful now that it is cooling off that they will set some more fruit. I'm happy with the banana peppers. Our chili's were at a disadvantage and I didn't expect them to do really well because that bed doesn't get a lot of light and they are on the north side of the corn so that adds extra shade. We just wanted a few to dry and make chili powder so we got what we wanted.

How many plants do you recommend planting for a cattle panel arch? Cucumbers, squash, pole beans and other vegetables plants?
@Leiannev4 ай бұрын
Hard to believe we are winding down the summer garden already. My peppers weren’t too great this year. I concentrated on cayennes & paprika. Usually do well with sweet bells. Squash took a beating with SVB despite my best efforts. Bringing in Homeland Security next year! Zone 5
@StoneyAcresGardening4 ай бұрын
I know right! Where did this summer go???
@ColoradoTodd4 ай бұрын
Wow, that's a lot of tomatoes! I've grown black beans, but not pinto. I decided that the labor to shuck and winnow them wasn't worth it since they're so cheap in bulk. However, I will probably grow goucho beans since I like their flavor (almost a cross between a pinto and kidney) and I can't find them in my local stores. I grow lots of potatoes and some beats, but I haven't been able to get excited about turnips. Honestly, despite the fact that we only eat plants, we just don't have many recipes that use turnips.
@StoneyAcresGardening4 ай бұрын
I agree with you on the beans. The pintos are just a fun experiment. I always like to know that I can grow things like dry beans, just in case the Zombies come and I end up HAVING to grow them. LOL! Turnips are not our favorite either, but we are trying a new variety this year to see if we like them. Good to meet another "plant eater", we are plant based too!

Does lettuce cross pollinate?
@StoneyAcresGardening4 ай бұрын
It can happen, but it is fairly unlikely. They way I keep that from happening is to only let one type of lettuce go to seed at one time, that way there are not any other varieties for them to cross with.
