@@mdb1010 I'm glad you said you're just getting into hockey. I get what you're saying. In short, yes, this is a big deal. In the grand scheme, they could've "dropped the game," so to speak. That's irrelevant. What's cool is watching someone - a zamboni driver for the opposing minor league team - get his one chance and rock it. That's what's fun here.
@nicholasbenge9497 Жыл бұрын
@@mdb1010no, but it was a critical game in the playoff race. The NHL requires all teams have an emergency goaltender list. It’s usually a college kid or an employee of the team with experience. If they aren’t employees, they are provided regular season tickets. If one of the teams has a goalie get injured and they cannot get their own replacement into the arena in time, they are required to suit up. David Ayres is one of the Zamboni drivers for the Leafs, mainly for the Marlies (the AHL affiliate). The Canes primary goaltender was injured in the first period. So, the Leafs made Ayres available to the Canes. Then, the backup got hurt in that collision at the start of the video. This forced David Ayres to play in a NHL game. He had the full third period plus the balance of the second period of play to survive (~28 minutes of hockey). He only let in two goals and was credited with the win, making him the only emergency goalie to be credited with a win.

Yup, there’s at least one for every game in every city. And they have to play for either the home or away team if they get called up. But that rarely ever happens, which is why this was so crazy.

Ayres had a GA of 4.18 and a save % of .800. Yes the Leafs lost, but they lost because Carolina put on an absolute clinic on defensive mid zone hockey. That unfortunately is the lost story. Ayres should get his day in the sun. Damn it's hard to be a Leaf'r.
@davyt02473 жыл бұрын
Carolina played like they were protecting a one goal lead in game 7 of the SCF, that’s how they won, they made absolutely certain the Leafs didn’t get any high danger chances in that 3rd period. They hit the ice running. And of course the offense did their job as well, they extended the lead the instant they got the opportunity.

@howardbaxter25144 жыл бұрын
Well, Ayres had to be nearly 1.5 periods. Definitely an interesting and unprecedented situation where an EBUG plays nearly half the game. Also, both Forslund and Tracy have been around the league for a while (Forslund since '95 with the Whalers, Tracy since '98), so they've seen a thing or two.

I never understood the penalty on this play. Toronto's player actually gets to the puck first and he gets called for a 5 minute charging penalty? It was actually the goalie that initiated contact.

Elliott Gold you’re making it seem way worse than it was, they both were going for the puck and hit each other, one had more speed so mrazek took the brunt of the collision. you out here making it seem like they were at war

“Charging shall mean the actions of a player who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner that results in an injury. - NHL Rule 42” (paraphrasing a bit, but this is the gist of the rule.) this is what the penalty was for.

I am a Colorado Avalanche fan that said there are two things about this game that struck me. I I would like to thank David Ayers, The Hurricanes and the Toronto FANS for putting a smile on all our faces. Considering the look on Rod Brind'Amours face when he realized what was going to happen and then his joy at the buzzer.. we all knew there are miracles even if it's every 40 years. But I am left wondering if in the heads of a few of the Leaf players they "soft played" the second half of the game?

First off, these commentators have been around for a LONG time. Forslund has been commentating for 25 years, Tripp for 22 (both with the Canes/Whalers). Secondly, Tripp used to play. Never made it out of the minors, but he still played hockey before he started Color Commentating back in '98.
