quick note: until Liverpool Street, you also follow the Hammersmith & City line. Most of the second half of the trip is a shared path with the District Line.

***** Looking into this, why did the circle line have to extend to Hammersmith? If I wanted to go towards the Hammersmith branch I would take the H'smith and city line. You're totally right from getting from Baker street to Bayswater, it would be much more easier to travel to Baker Street to Bayswater if the Circle line was a circle. Of all the sub-surface lines, my favourite has to be the Metropolitan line! But I might have a biased view due to living close to Rayners Lane and West Harrow. The Metropolitan line is long (longer than the district line mind you) but it's fast. So I find myself getting from West Harrow to Baker street in almost no time. Not only that, it isn't as crowded as the Hammersmith and city, Circle and District lines. It also has Fast and Semi-fast trains at peak hours. (I usually use the Semi-fast trains) Making it convenient when you want to go to work. Sure even the Bakerloo line is rarely crowded like the Metropolitan line but it's slow when it's overground.

I guess that the Circle line was extended down to Hammersmith due to train frequency here. The Circle line has 6 tph and the Hammersmith & City line does also have 6 tph. Maybe it was worth more extending the Circle line than increasing train frequency on the Hammersmit & City line.

The Circle Line now is a circle no more, A state of affairs one can only deplore; If going to Bayswater from Baker Street, A journey one thought took 5 mins to complete, The train soon flies off at a tangent forthwith, And ends up much later at Gare Hammersmith! PAS, 2009.

S8 stock trains have eight cars and are used on the Metropolitan Line. Those trains also have a mix of transverse and longitudinal seating. S7 stock trains have seven cars, are used on all District Line, Hammersmith & City Line, and Circle Line services, and only have longitudinal seating.

Tube stock used to be named after the lines the stock was used on. The new S stock is [S]ub-Surface. A stock was used on the Metropolitan line to [A]mersion, C stock on the [C]ircle Line/Hammersmith and [C]ity Line, and D stock on the [D]istrict Line.

Actually that's where you are wrong! The difference in the number of cars is the not the only thing- S8 Stock has a different seating configuration!!

Fun fact: there is _one_ 8-car Metropolitan line train which only has longitudinal-style seating, just like the 7-car sets on other lines! If you're a regular traveller on the Metropolitan line, it makes for a nice "Easter egg hunt" to find that one train. :-)
