"Protecting the blade or rubber against hitting the table" is what is done by ordinary players (let's say 99.9 percent of players)... When it comes to professional level, players are sponsored by several suppliers so they have access to free rubbers and blades as many as they want even for daily use... So professional players do not use it as for protection... If you watch Timo Boll's educational videos, he says the amount and location of the edge tape that we use depends on how we want to balance the blade in terms of the weight, friction with air in a particular direction, spin and dwell time of the blade etc for a particular match. Not Felix, but a player who Alex said Felix was inspired by. It's because for the penholders it used to be common to only use one side of the paddle. Felix uses both sides though as the technique and the approach has advanced.
