How many people have noticed Hugo’s addition to his serve. He is now gripping the ball between his finger tips and the base of his thumb. This trick of course adds additional control for his high toss strike the ball behind his head, where the receiver can’t see it serve

Lin Yun-Ju is the well deserved winner. Yet again and again he has not exhibited the kind of consistency and control we expect from a first-rate player of the sport. Like here in the last game, even though he won the game and match in the end by closing it out at 11-9, when at 10-7, he lost the following two points to Hugo due to unforced errors, and would have lost the game and match if he made just one or two more of same. He also barely won in almost the same manner last match. I am not sure if he has enough form to beat China's Lin Shidong, his next opponent, if he remains unable to improve his consistency, avoid most unforced errors and play at his best level like he did last year in Frankfurt. Not withstanding what I wrote, I wish his best in his match against Lin Shidong.

His backhand flicks looked so slow this match, surely Lin Shidong smokes him in the backhand if he plays like that.

Have these commentators ever played table tennis before? Why don’t they talk about technique and shot selection?
@bystanderprod17 күн бұрын
For real. They are literally saying nothing.
@jiripingpong680017 күн бұрын
Yes, commentators like this are useless. I sometimes just turn the sound off. As an active mid-level player I want to learn from the matches and hear about the shot and spin selection, ball placement, how they stand and move, why some shot succeed and some not (e.g. that they didn't make the necessary half step forward and instead of it reached to the ball), etc.

How about the choice of metaphors: “Shakespeare couldn’t write it” )))

The male commentator is frankly the worse and he always seems to get commentating gigs. Just says talks about how monumental a game is and how exceptionally skilled the players are, he literally never talks about anything that's happening in the game. They need to find ex-pros that can be English commentators so we can hear about strategy and shot selections.
@Timbrrrdoodle17 күн бұрын
@ I find their commentary obnoxious. You’re right, it’s the same praise of the players and event every single time. Please WTT I’m begging you to find better commentators or ask me to do it.

hugo needs to find a Chinese coach or Japanese one. He improved a lot recently, just see how he beats all Korean players. But still has space to improve.

Korean players these days are second tier players. The Chinese play in a league of their own and then comes the Europeans represented by Felix Lebrun and Truls Moregard.
@MrCooperscoopers18 күн бұрын
@@containternet9290 well, Hugo can beat most of the Chinese players. He beat Lin sidong and Xiang pen in 2023. He beat fzd in incheon but that probably was due to fzd's injury.

@@MrCooperscoopers Nah, Hugo hasn't won any title against the Chinese ever. In unimportant matches the Chinese may lose one or two for any player, WCQ recently lost to a 14 yeard old kid but when push comes to shove the Chinese take it all.

@@containternet9290 I hate this mentality, people always talk about Chinese players achievements as a whole but then compare individual players to that group's achievements. Sure Chinese players usually win events because they have so many good players but no Chinese player has been anywhere close to as dominant as Ma Long as an individual player and none of the current Chinese players look like they will be get close to that dominance in the near future.

hugo is a great player, but no 7 in the world is a hit overrated. I would say is he is definitely top 15. Lin on the other hand is a player around top 5-10 which he is a bit underrated at this point in time.
@marcostripoli284917 күн бұрын
Your analisys is very superficial. Calderano is a player more consistent than Lin and his ranking is acordding to his results in the tournaments. It’s no use Lin beat 4 times Calderano but lose 4 times for Felix Lebrun or Lin beat 4 times Calderano but lose 4 times for Lim Jong-Hoon. This is not consistency. Calderano has record better against various players than Lin and that's why he stay well in the ranking .
@Charliehuangmagic17 күн бұрын
@ I agree Hugo has more consistency. But keep in mind Hugo is basically unbeatable in Pan-American Championships and he always has 500 ranking points, which gives him a big boost in rankings, similar boosts show in players like Quadri Aruna, where he gets his 500 points annually. Meanwhile a win in Asian Championships only gets you 500, but it’s much more harder to win one. That’s why there will inherently be a boost for the best players in Africa and Pan America because they have weaker opponents. Nevertheless, Hugo definitely is an extraordinary player, I am just saying his rankings is overrated a little bit.

Even IF you do take the 500 hundred pan america points from Calderano, this points would be replaced by the 175 from the saudi smash(which is the 9th best result, and the best 8 results are the ones that count for Table Tennis ranking), which would still leave him at the number 8 spot of the world ranking. Not only that, but he hasn't left the top 10 for the past 7 Years!! What about Lin Yun Ju??
