Such a great movie. R. Lee Ermey was the perfect choice for the drill Sargent since he was one in real life. I'm amazed though that he managed to do the part without the normal, frequent and creative use of a vast vocabulary of expletives! 🤣🤣🤣

Oh yes. I'm sure it happened a lot. When I was in basic training, we had a Senior Master Sergeant who would pull apart a bunk right down to the springs. Not because he found anything wrong with it, but because it was too perfect. If a bunk or a locker looked totally squared away to this guy, he would pull it all apart to look for something out of place.

Anything that is not secured, even a footlocker, is unacceptable. Because some day that recruit may be responsible for securing something more important. Not to shortchange the Jarheads out there, but our (Army) confidence tower at Fort Dix was a lot tougher than that seen in this movie. The crossbeams got farther apart the higher you went. The top beam you could just barely reach with your fingers if you were average height. We had only one chance, and I did not go for the top, but I found out later you were not expected to...just go around the poles at the sides. I sometimes laugh to myself at the taller guys who I remember felt it to be possible and struggled fruitlessly to get over the top beam...those were great days.

Ermey was the real deal. That’s exactly what boot camp was, and a far far distant cry from what it is today. Although I was Army, we had our “Ermy’s”. Mean ass Viet Nam veterans who were determined to make our lives a miserable hell, and they did. We had a Pyle in our platoon, overweight and stupid as they get. I remember on the firing range, he kept breathing as he shot. Drill instructor was screaming at him to hold, then pull the trigger, then breathe. But he did not, his rounds were all over the target. They taught him how to hold his breath by sticking his head in the toilet, flushing it and as the water went down, screaming “breathe”. Water going up .. “hold”. May sound outrageous… but it happened and it worked. Pyle didn’t make it, they eventually washed him out.

Stanley Kubrick made a fantastic 1/2 movie. The second half was completely useless. The second half seem to he a completely different movie. I love R. Lee Ermey, but he played the swme character in Boys in Company C. He played the same character in the cameo in the movie The Watch. So he couldn't play anyone other than a drill sargeant. So his acting ability was severely limited.
