I trained with the FFL twice... Jungle Warfare in 1986 as a young US Marine Reconnaissance Marine in 1986 then again at Camp de Canjeurs FR in 1988... toughest SOBs on the planet! I gave serious consideration to joining the FFL in 1993 after my active duty in the Corps... Semper Fi!

@@crusher8017 SAS is special forces, the FFL is regular infantry. There's no comparison although fitness wise the FFL isn't that far behind. Anyway, It's hard to find another nation's infantry as tough as the FFL.

When I went through infantry school at Benning in 2005, we had a former foreign legion LT. He was one of the best in our cycle. He left a great impression on everyone, including the base commander. I still remember him 19 years later.

There is one single woman registered with FFL, Susan Travers an english military woman, she was a nurse and driver with FFL on Bir-Hakeim battle during the 2nd WW, later she was with the FFL on Indochine war, she was made Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur, Croix de guerre 39-45 and received the Medaille Militaire, she lived in France until his death in 2003 at 94 years old, what a life, FFL surname was " la miss ", before the war she was a semi pro tennis player..she wrote a book, Tomorrow to be brave : A Memoir of the Only Woman Ever to serve in the French Foreign Legion

They mentioned Den Bien Phu once in the entire documentary. Yet probably the most important battle the Legion fought. They lost, but this engagement personifies the Legionaire spirit.

I would say that Camerone in 1863 is the most important battle the Legion ever fought and which created and epitomised the spirit of the Legion. While there was a large number of legionnaires at Dien Bien Phu they didn't make up the bulk of French forces. In "Hell In A Very Small Place" by Bernard Fall, he states that on March 12th 1953, the day before the the real battle began, there were 2,969 Legionnaires out of a total of 10, 814 French union soldiers. Out of 4,300 reinforcements parachuted in, 962 belonged to the Legion. Along with (especially) the Paras the legionnaires fought well but ultimately the majority surrendered.

David Guerrero you have no idea what you are talking about. The FFL is the last real men's club on earth, truly world class. I was in the Marines, then a contractor, everyone has respect for the Legion. I also trained with a French Marine Commando unit, I can't remember the acronym but they were also world class, same with the Royal Marine Commandos. The French can fight, make no mistake, but the Legion are one of the finest fighting forces in the world. Obviously I am a Marine so I am bias, but the Legion are every bit out equal, and have before and still now consider joining before I age out.

During the Battle of Narvik in Norway in 1940, the 13th Half Brigade was part of the Foreign Legion as part of the French contribution to the Allied force deployed against the Germans. The half brigade was under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Raoul Magrin-Vernerey, with Antoine Béthouart as commander-in-chief of the French forces. It's great to hear the late great general Norman Schwartzkopf. He was the last US military officer who received the majestic welcome home parade on the streets of New York. And together with his superior, general Collin Powell, he was the last US general proposed by Congress to receive the highest 5 star rank of General of the Army. I have been in the Army myself, and find the training and professionalism here superb. It says that some men have been rejected by other armies. The legion appears to turn them into better soldiers than they armies they were rejected for. I have trained with the US Army, and the Swiss Army. I would say that the US Army is way inferior to this. The Swiss Army training is tough too.

It said something about asking soldiers if they wanted to commit suicide or something. In our say, you would answer "only if ordered to do so" - or face a charge.

@@peace-now so in the US Army each year every Soldier has a ton of classes they have to do. The company is assessed by what percentage of its personnel has completed what. Suicide awareness is one. Since completing these classes is something a company can be graded on compared to say how well does each Soldier know their MOS these online classes to priority over getting ready for combat since it is a reflection of how well the company commander led. No such stupid policy would ever happen in the FFL. Example. I was instructing one of my new Soldiers on how to use a piece of equipment they barely touched in basic and AIT. I wasn't even halfway done when I was asked what I was doing? I explained my new Soldier doesn't know how to use this equipment. I was told that is well and good but they need to get following classes done ASAP.

@@ssgus3682 Thanks for the intel. I actually learnt most of my skills in school cadets, especially marching, as I was in the school band, and you have to march well in the band! I learnt everything in school cadets, including losing my voice from shouting, which was repeated again in basic training. I was later in the New Zealand Artillery, and we learnt combat skiils, including map reading (very very important), fire discipline (artillery), triangular harbors, rifle skills, grenade practice, reverse cycle, camouflage, ambush drills, hand signals, and lots of stand tos.

Seems quite accurate except that there are many French men in the FFL: first most of the officers are French, then among soldiers plenty that register as coming from a French speaking country, Belgium, Canada... As said at the beginnning, you join to change your life and get a 2nd chance, some French do want to change their life too.

What i know about the legion is .. officers can be a french citizen .. but NCO and the others cannot be from french .. but holder of french passport can be a legionnare . Meaning you come from another country and given another identity as french citizen .. sorry if i am wrong ..

You can join as a French native. You just have to renounce to your french nationality and adopt another francophone one. A 1/4, more or less, of the legion is french, officers included.

In what fantasy world do you live in? Free world? They are used for interest of France and often US. They committed atrocities for the sake of those interest . I agree with you. They are one of the most well known military forces in the world. I haven't watched the whole of this documentary but after the first few minutes I got the impression that it is similar to a number of others which try and make out that the Legion is full of hardened criminals and "hired killers". I was immediately suspicious of it. Like all military units there will be a few guys who have broken the law but the Legion does not accept serious criminals and has a good intelligence section to weed them out. Also the legion is a normal unit of the French army and not exactly Special Forces. Nor are they exactly mercenaries in the true sense of the word. The number of people applying to join the Legion means that it can select some pretty good candidates.

They began as mercenaries. France put them under the control of the French Army after the Legion attempted a coup d’etat by planning to assasinate De Gaul. While they are now part of the French Army they still have their own mandates and rules. They are more elite than basic infantry in any army.

Technically yes, a French citizen cannot join the Légion. But its recruitment service will give an alternative nationality for the duration of their service to any french citizen wanting to join its ranks. Therefore, French citizens can and do join the Legion Étrangère. That actually makes you wonder what kind of agreement the Légion has with foreign countries so it they can issue passports.

A lot of things totally false said by the narrator. Legion has about 25-30% french enlisted. They are not mercenaries, paid for one particular task, but are fully part of the french army, and they work with other regiments in combined task forces. And legion wasn't defeated in Algeria. In fact France was winning the war, but General De Gaulle understood that a military win wasn't good, times had changed and it was better to give up the colonialism. Independance was the key word for all the ex french colonies.

You don't know very much about the Algerian war of independence do you? It was a savage all out bid by France to hold Algeria at all costs. They even striped bare their forces in indo china to reinforce Algeria. The effort to keep Algeria broke France and the empire. Algeria was Frances India. And as for the legion, they lost their home (Algeria) and were decimated. The FLN delt and other Algerian factions delt very very harshley with them as they were hated. The French and in particular the Legion mastered the art of counter insurgency warfare in Algeria. De Gaulle reneged on his campaign promises, betrayed the army and decided to grant independence to Algeria despite the battlefield success. French counter insurgency warfare in Algeria has since become a reference - Petraeus studied it closely to try and find a solution in Afghanistan.

Most of the loyal and selfless men I've encountered. I live with one of them and met another and I swear I felt how they were brothers and they looked alike and I now it's weird but I felt for the same reason that I knew the other one to! The slim, all muscle body, strength like a horse, the haircut, how they walked and their calm attitude and how they looked you in the eyes. And I know that my hubby ran before ca 40 km before breakfast when he was activate in service.mind blowing! So weird to experience! But felt like home🥰

War isn't that simple. Legion is used for what she is best at, like all the others units of the french army. Nowadays, they are rarely the first to combat. The Foreign Legion also hold the dubious distiction of being the only regiment in the world to have fought against each other, in Syria close to Damascus the Vichy Legionnairs opposed the Free French Legionnaires when the allies invaded in WW2, after a short skirmish the Free French Legionnaires sent over an officer under a white flag of truce to parle. Both sides held the same belief that the Foreign Legion never ever surrenders to a foe but the Vichy Legionnairs agreed to surrend to their fellow Legionairs also a first the same time a Regiment has surrendered to its own Regiment. FFL doesn't accept hard criminals anymore. Sure, they won't bother you if you were a troubled civilian who committed small thefts or if you were a brawler, but this notion that you can kill somebody and run away from it by joining the FFL is fallacious. Sure, in the good old days they accepted anyone, even members of the SS joined after WW2 and weren't asked for confession but that's the FFL of old.

Sad thing I hear us that the language thing remains problem, despite the hype about everyone learning french. You'll learn it enough maybe to be functional but real unity is hampered by the various "mafias" that are formed between Slavs, francophones, anglophones, etc. That would be a problem that would be hard to overcome

@@mitchellg3893 neither. It's obvious that Russians, Poles, Koreans, Turks aren't learning French very well in a few years. It's obvious that birds of a feather flock together...and the biggest factor in how people gather is language. This can't be good. I've read it more than once over the years; not from deserters or lifetime FFL. I'm not saying it can't be worked around, but it shouldn't be advertised as some kind of advantage.

This is basic soldering at its best. I spent 3 years in the U.S. Army and 18 years in the USAF. I am proud to have served my country, but I think the US military has become too political and woke. I can see how the FFL would appeal to some people. Especially those seeking a second chance or a new start in life. Redemption is a good thing for a troubled or restless soul. Much respect to those who accept the challenge and succeed!
