Full news conference: About a dozen ballots intercepted, cast without voters’ knowledge in Mesa Coun

A criminal investigation is underway after the ballots of about a dozen voters in Mesa County were intercepted and cast without the voters’ knowledge, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold said.
The secretary of state revealed the issue at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon.

@ModernGolfer I think in-person should have its exceptions, but as a compromise, mail ballots could have an online or mobile verification with exceptions for the elderly, sick, or disabled. Also, photo id isn't as easy for everyone to get, believe it or not. Some older birth certificates require legal changes to qualify for verification depending on the state.

Colorado has one of the most secure elections in the country. I sent my ballot in over a week ago, they emailed that they got it and then a few days later emailed that they checked and recorded my vote. Early mail voting gives the election people more time to verify the votes sent in.

Do ya even have to go in person to register? What ya described isn't that the election is secure, but has a good verification process to who ever casts the ballot. Update your signature and then use the same signature on your ballot envelope. Easy. There are also other safeguards against fraud with mail in voting. It's pretty damn secure, which is why these ballots were flagged.

@anthonythompson9563 So because you asked this question, I will let you in on something. I found this out from behind the scenes of the county where I voted. I asked the question whether my early vote would be as secure as if I voted on Election Day itself. I was told by a 20-year veteran of the County voting office that my early vote would be very secure because the people who would be officiating then would be full-time employees of the county in the capacity of voting assistants. He then told me that on the actual day of voting, the workers are trained volunteers only, but do not have the years of experience that full-time workers do. So if something were to go awry or there's a problem or a question on Election Day, all you have to really help you at that moment are volunteers versus the full-time highly experienced workers on duty for early in- person voting. Good to know....so I voted early and in-person!!🫡

In this set of circumstances there will probably be additional federal charges as it seems that the ballots were received via mail, and tampering with the mail can be prosecuted with various federal statues. Those would be in addition to whatever state statues are implicated. But otherwise, it's usually coverd under state laws. (Though there are a few federal statues that might also apply.)

There has been an uptick in attacks on postal delivery people, mostly stealing the master keys for the clustered mail delivery boxes. Theives stealing packages and mail, such as government checks (Social Security payments & the like). I'm from Multnomah County Oregon and live overseas in Asia. We are allowed to email our ballot. I go onto the SOS office website and fill out my ballot, then save it as a pdf. I also have to sign a secret ballot waiver and then the envelop, but I do all of it online and email them. So I got my ballot in late September and had it ready to send back in three days. I got an email from my county clerk that it was received and then another one saying it was accepted (meaning the signature was verified.

Either someone went to peoples mail boxes and stole the ballots or a postal worker who handles the ballots before being delivered to the mail boxes.
