@@andy530i Thanks for the good info. So it is neither the intake nor the afterburner that makes the howl, but the exhaust nozzle with shorter blades that the GE J79 engine in an F104 is equipped with. The small flame at the bottom of the afterburner you can see at 18.35 is the pilot burner, which ignites the extra fuel that was injected when activating the afterburner. I built a model on my bedroom shelf that made noise when you pressed a button , rotating a toothed gear on a thin flap of metal. The spike on the leading edge of the intake inlets is to slow down the boundary layer of air entering the inlet to the J-79 Turbo jet. The same engine the F-4 phantoms used. the F-4 has a movable slat on both sides with holes in them to slow down boundary layer of air. Many use to think the howl is from the intake. But is is actually from the exhaust nozzle.
@Surestick883 жыл бұрын
Not the boundary layer. It's there to create a shockwave so the airflow into the engine isn't supersonic.

Being a child in the 60s I had a fascination with airplanes, the B-58 Hustler was my favorite over all and the F-101 Voodoo was my favorite fighter. Unfortunately the F-104 Starfighter was among my least favorite aircraft. It's design was a big tube with little stubby wings that seemed wholly inadequate for the job. Over the years my favorite fighter design remains the F-16, it's not the most powerful and it's definitely not the newest but I see it as the best designed and most versatile fighter ever.
@fransmargadant Жыл бұрын
That is an impressive list of aircraft. We will see less and less of the F-16, unfortunately. The F-16 is increasingly being replaced by the F-35, some find it ugly when it is on the ground, but beautiful when it flies. No idea whether the F-35 is the best choice to replace the F-35. The howl of the F-104 always gives me goosebumps and the F-16 still gives great airshows due to its maneuverability. I have never seen the McDonnell F-101 Voodoo, but I have seen the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II and it sounds like an old-fashioned vacuum cleaner. The Raptor is a favorite, as are the F-15 and the Saab Gripen. What else do you like?
@InquisitiveSearcher Жыл бұрын
@@fransmargadant Wow, what else do I like? That's a big question. I like the F4 Corsair, the P51, the Mosquito, the P38, the B1 which has elegance to its impressive function, where as the B52 seems to be a giant boxcar with wings. I was impresses by the ability of the F4 Phantom, though to me it looked like a real life example of the saying about how you can make a brick fly with enough engine. And speaking of making a brick fly, you should look up the one wing landing an Israeli pilot did with an F15, just incredible! The F15 is another example of mussel with only a bit of elegance whereas the F22 is an incredible mix of mussel, elegance and lethality, just incredible. I haven't made up my mind on the F35 yet but I'm leaning towards liking it. I sorta kinda liked the original F18 but the Super Hornet seems a bit oversized though very capable aircraft. I took a picture of the Blue Angels flying the Super Hornet in a diamond formation where they are coming out of a downward turn setting up for a low pass where the angle of the shot makes it seem that you're going to get sucked into their intakes. And that's just those that come immediately to mind. 😉

The only thing I hated about the 104, other than the sharp wing edges, was the way a pilot had to eject was out the bottom. Easy to work on and load, speaking from a gun plumbers view.
@realulli3 жыл бұрын
The early models ejected downwards because the seat couldn't lift the pilot over the tail. That proved troublesome when they used the plane for low level runs, as it launched the pilot straight into the ground. So, the pilots were trained to roll the plane on its back before ejecting when flying low level. Later models got improved ejection seats that could lift the pilot over the tail. The pilots rolled the plane, got launched into the ground again. Oops. Retraining required...

These comments, unfortunately, repeat several myths about the F-104. For one thing, it is an excellent dogfighter when flown by someone who knows how to work the vertical. Pilots of other fighters in dissimilar aircraft exercises often accused the F-104 of cheating, since it kept going up and down instead of making turns like a 'real' airplane. One F-8 pilot reported following a smoke trail to track down an F-4 (which used the same J-79 engine) and realizing he was in trouble when the F-104 flying close formation with the F-4 pulled up into a climb the F-8 couldn't match. He was still trying to spot the smaller plane when it made a diving attack from behind and scored a simulated kill. With the G-model takeoff flaps the F-104 could outturn an F4. T/O flap limit speeds were then M0.8 or 550 KIAS, whichever was reached first. As for climb, a strictly standard F104A/J-79-19 in combat configuration could reach 45000ft. 90 seconds after brake release. None of the nicknames listed were actually used by F-104 pilots, especially "Widowmaker." This was given to it by others, largely due to the unfortunate German accident rate early in the plane's deployment there. (Note that during this same period Spain lost *none* of its F-104s.) Once Germany changed its training program, their accident rate for the F-104 dropped to well within the same range as that for other jet fighters of the period. Pilots called it the Zipper. The problem with the F104G and the Luftwaffe was a combination of shorter runways (8000 ft) than the pilots had trained on at Luke AFB (11000 ft), much worse weather (Luke is in the desert), and lack of experience of the pilots and of the mechanics. At this time the economy of Germany was swiftly improving and many LW mechanics separated from the service to go to work in industry at much higher levels of pay. Note that the Belgians seldom had an accident although their weather is generally as bad as Germany's. - Walt Bjorneby, 730 hours of F104 time.
