The origins of cyclo-cross are a matter of much debate. One theory we like is that in the early 1900s, French cyclists would race each other from one town to the next by whichever route they thought would be the fastest. They would cut through fields and forests, carry their bike over fences and generally take any shortcut they could in order to make it to the finish first!
Today, Cyclo-cross is raced on a circuit of between 2.5km and 3.5km. The terrain is varied and may include clearings, roads, country lanes, sands and forest paths. Riders are required to complete several laps of the circuit over a period of no more than one hour. Sometimes they have to carry their bikes in order to negotiate steep paths, muddy tracks and artificial obstacles. Technical back-up is permitted.
This spectacular discipline is an unbeatable school of cycling in that it requires incredible technical skill, impressive physical fitness and plenty of courage.

I don't get why you have to give the commentator so much grief. Yes, it's embarassing that he took Cant for de Boer but he profusely apologized as soon as he realized and it might help to remember that it must be bloody hard to basically talk to yourself for hours as lone commentator. With no one there to give you a nudge in the ribs and whisper "You mean Cant!" So thanks for the hard work and thanks to UCI for letting me (re-)watch cyclocross for free.

Great to get a lot of background on the British riders...but the commentator didn't win any fans by mistaking Sanne Cant for Sophie DeBoer for the first 2 laps!! Once he did correct his mistake at minute 30:47 he didn't even acknowledge his mistake until a few minutes later. That's probably why there are so many thumbs down!

This commentator is THAT bad, for 20 minutes of the race he couldn't get the Belgium National Champs name right !! AWFUL

he is NOT that bad. if you don't understand why he had sophie de boer's name stuck in his head, then you've never seen sophie de boer! ;-)

He is that bad ,all you get from him usual is disc brakes and lars van de haar if can't tell a Belgium national flag from a all white World Cup leader ,but what's worst is how long it went on for he cocked up on the men's race ,he can't do race commentary ,but he is good on other information
