I bought one of those but on an Oyster bracelet when I was 19 (so 20 years ago) for $650. I got it serviced once a couple of years on; it came with a weak crown tube, an aftermarket crystal, but keeping ok time. I got a full service, the crystal replaced, and the crown tube replaced, for about $150. I wore the heck out of that thing from the time I bought it until 2019; kept perfect time the whole time, selling at flea markets in the freezing cold and the scorching heat, rain, snow, loading and unloading a big truck every day, and getting smashed hard enough against a pole by the head of a goat to break a chunk off the crystal. I love that watch. It’s not really pretentious or anything; nobody notices it- granted most of my time with it on various leather straps; not a fan of old Rolex bracelets. Too many people see the pompous overpriced marketing of today and don’t remember the Rolex of the late 60s that was like a Volvo or Mercedes of that time- a premium price fully justified by the quality and ruggedness of the product on a functional level.

I bought that same model (at least it looked the same on the outside) in 1974 with a leather band brand new for $100 USD. I lost it some 20 years later and it still makes me sad. I would no doubt still be wearing it to this day if I had'nt. Thank you for bring it back for me.

I just watched your video and I absolutely loved it! I found your presentation to be incredibly informative and engaging. You did a great job of breaking down complex concepts into easy-to-understand terms. I also appreciated the humor and personal anecdotes that you sprinkled throughout the video. It made the content more relatable and enjoyable. You're one of the few KZbinrs who I can consistently count on to deliver high-quality content. Keep up the great work! I didn't know you could tighten up a jubilee bracelet like that. Very interesting & may have to watch that part again (not that I would ever attempt it). Just had Grandpa's Rolex Date (1977) serviced, and that's one thing that I think would make it perfect. It's very loose, but it's still my favorite watch.

Thing is, the clasp says "Rolex" but it doesn't have have he #'s staked on the ears where it meets the watch so I'm not sure it's original. Otherwise I would send it to you to make it happen.

Yet another great video. These step-by-step videos are nice for the hobbyist seeking to up his game. FWC...One day....if you happen to run across one...I would love to see you do a Rolex 1030 movement. I have a 1957 Rolex Oyster Perpetual I need to service. It has been virtually untouched since given as a 25-year service watch way back in 1957. Though it runs well, I am uncertain of its service history, so it likely needs to be serviced after years of dried-up (maybe original) oils. The timegrapher reveals as much. The watch is like new and, from what I was told, was virtually unworn. Since I do not want to miss anything or overlook some Rolex eccentricity, and I cannot find a 1030 servicing/restoration video anywhere, you would be just the man for the job 👍👍😊😊😎😎

Mechanical watch manual or automatic need to be serviced. There is no link between automatic or not. After modern watches need to have parts changed more often than old watches

These watches are the most robust and solid The only thing that I wouldn't like about this one is you have to unscrew the crown wind it and screw it back down every day I think that would put a tremendous wear on the crown tube and the threads and the gaskets and reduce the length of time it would be water resistant other than that it's a daily wearer without worrying about hurting it.
@FrenchWatchCollector
@FrenchWatchCollector Жыл бұрын
Yes it is an extra step but it is very easy to change the tube and not expensive at all

I am not sure, but did you just polish the bracelet and the case of a truly original and basically fine Rolex? If so, you did what Rolex do with vintage watches all the time: totally devalue them. Maybe one of the videos of the Horological Society of New York by Eric Wind ("Collecting Vintage Watches") should have told you that this is a total no-go. What a waste of time and money ... and you usually do such good work.
@FrenchWatchCollector
@FrenchWatchCollector Жыл бұрын
This is a very personal taste. Myself I will do the same as you said. Some people prefer to have their vintage pieces looking fresh and you cannot go against their opinion if it is their watch
@ygrbooks

@@FrenchWatchCollector You are absolutely right, though I would tell the customers about this problem.😩 Rolex has really "destroyed" so many of their watches in the past and their latest program in collaboration with Bucherer (Certified Pre-Owned) gets rid of all the original "defective" parts, boxes and papers ... and you cannot even claim them back!
