People who think OP was wrong need to re-evaluate. I am 72 now but have been on both sides of the MIL issue. I can honestly say that I NEVER treated my inlaws poorly, regardless of our positions! I have, however, been on the receiving end of shoddy treatment from both mother in laws and daughter in laws. I kept true to my own heart and beliefs and didn't let myself fall to their level. I wish the best for OP but ...

just saying, if my MiL showed up to my wedding and said I needed to dress in her world because I need to at least be presented appropriately in front of my wedding party, I'd just grab the wine and throw it on the dress. OP's mom let the woman say her daughter was not "clasys" enough ON HER OWN WEDDING DAY! That right there should have ended either the MiL 's antics or relationship. Then the fact OP just kept trying to please MiL as if one day she will accept her. She should have vacated and lived elsewhere the moment she saw her job within MiL's sights.

OK so the people that seem to think that OP should have just quietly get over her pain are really insulting. Do they not care that OP was about to lose her job. Her professional reputation was being compromised. Her marriage was being destroyed. Her wedding was ruined because OP wasn't even allowed to wear the dress she wanted to wear. At every turn this woman was crawling up OP's behind destroying her happiness and ruining relationships. This woman was an unholy terror and this is just supposed to be swept under the rug for the sake of not embarrassing the MIL? Um no. What about OP's feelings or her embarrassment? Once again, commenter 2 forgot the severity of the situation and how devious the MIL is. If they reread the story again, they would realize that MIL simply does NOT like OP for petty reasons and is too clingy towards her son. The MIL was nasty towards her, both directly and indirectly at home and at her job; she even went as far as to manipulate her son and nephew to side with her through lies and spreading gossip to make OP's life very difficult. Of course, OP wasn't perfect but she didn't try to escalate things and tried her best to keep herself under control yet she knew how devious and influential her MIL is. When push comes to shove...you don't always need to be the bigger person, you just need to be smart. ....And that's what OP did.
