The Greater Milliard Railway Museum has been running historic trains for thirty years. It may not sound like much, but some of the volunteers agree that the fact that the group made it this far is an milestone in and of itself. With the encouragement of the museum's young volunteer force, how can the organization's leader get comfortable with leaving his comfort zone to move the group with the times?

It was an absolute pleasure to see how this came together. Brian’s vision and attention to detail was very impressive and inspiring from the day he sent me the script. He was especially open minded to changes to the script and adding little details to make it more realistic, something most people aren’t willing to do. I’m very glad to have been able to bring James to life and witness his changes through only a half hour episode. This goes to show that preserving this equipment is not always easy, and you may have to cater to those you normally don’t. But at the end of the day, if you put the effort in, you can do it. These machines are beautiful in their own ways, not just for the history, but for the people that watched them, and relied on them. Their being an engineering and manufacturing marvel even today speaks volumes. They’re worth preserving. And the best way to do so is to make them known. As James says in his last line, this is a good business to be in. I think we’re all lucky to have a part in it. Hats off, Brian. It turned out fantastic.

All I can say is, phenomenal! Nothing else to say honestly. This was innovative, creative, it was detailed nicely, it was executed properly, the message of what is trying to be said about how we’re lucky to have dedicated people to preserving not just our history, but something that people of all ages, railfan or not, adore watching come to life regardless adds a whole lot of charm to the story. It wasn’t too bland nor too preachy. I adore the attention to detail throughout the video, especially since this is half an hour long, that’s pretty impressive. Whether being the animation or the script, it was all crafted with finesse. I look forward to seeing more of these episodes in the future.

To say the least. Note: This is coming out from a Polish Railfans mouth. This is beautiful! The full attention to detail, scenery, locomotive operation, the script, the subject. Everything in this video is just PERFECT in my opinion. I hope someday in the future there will be a series like this with loooong episodes. A big congats to the author of High Iron for making something really awesome and creative. Pozdrowienia from Polska and thumbs up coming from across the pond! :)

This show is, in all honesty, a bit boring. All the characters feel flat with no real flaws and don't seem particularly interesting. The only memorable one being Twila, and I'm fairly certain that that's because she is a girl. As for the plot itself, the biggest problem I can see in it is that nothing went wrong, nor were any steaks really set up should they fail. Sure, the railroad is in decline and a loss financially would mess severely with the finances, but that didn't really get brought up much, and what little suspense was further dampened with how quickly tickets sold out. If I were to make any recommendations, I would recommend the following: The engine of their 44 toner looks to be more duck tape then metal, their one operational steam locomotive being kept together with glue, tooth picks, normal tape, and some sticky stuff they found by the trackside. The management can be best described as utterly incompetent and blatantly corrupt and the mayor wants desperately to turn the line into a trail for some odd reason. Financially speaking, it can reasonably be considered as the Penn Central of railroad museums and the only way to salvation is one last hail marry, that being some sort of celebration of the 30 year anniversary, for which management decided to advertise a special long, historically accurate train for the newly operational #30, renting out additional passenger cars, buying a new steamer, and somehow convincing Amtrak to allow them to run on the mainline. All of which was paid for by reallocating money intended for such superfluous things as "maintenance across the board" and "restoring #30 to operation". While near completion, it was unknown if the restoration #30 would even be ready in time for the event. As for the steam locomotives, the board claimed they were "very good deals" and that they would "save the railroad". One of the locomotives was a Lima Berkshire, which would've been awesome to have had it 1. not been far over the weight of rail for the railroad and 2. been in such a horrendous state, both cosmetically and mechanically. The only reason it had survived up to that point was because it had, somehow, been place on the national registry of historic monuments. Thankfully, it was practically given away by the town it had resided in, being sold for pennies. The other locomotive was the main money sink. It was a Russian decapod made by Alco during the first world war, and was, from the pictures shown, in decent condition for being stuck in the middle of the Siberian wastes in Russia since well before the fall of the USSR. As to why it was bought, it was apparently a favor for a boardmember's girlfriend's great grandfather who once told her that it would be nice to see the old locomotive he used to drive back in Russia. This forced the decision to completely abandon any notion of restoring #30 cosmetically and hoping that the reallocation of resources, and abandoning all previous agreements could get it ready in time for the big day. While this was happening, those who weren't currently occupied in getting #30 to operation, scrambled to find any help at all for the big event. Only one guy shows up to help, but they do find local business who would be willing to put up money to help the railroad, on the condition that one car on the train was used for ad space. With no other options, they accept and repaint a barely road legal boxcar with the advertisement. The money going into hiring people to help with the restoration and staff for the event, as well as a new shipment of finely grounded coal. Meanwhile, the restoration isnt going very well. The extra help certainly sped up the process, but the laborers point out multiple problems that hadn't been noticed before. The problems can only be resolved with new parts. Parts that would take a lot of time to create. Time they dont have. This forces the cannibalization of parts from the other locomotives to get #30 done on time, with only hours to spare by the end. When the rented passenger cars finally arrived (on the day of the event), they were of era and mechanically sound, albeit the exterior and interior was dirty and grimey. The finely grounded coal, when dropped into the tender, had a good amount be carried by the wind up the engine, dirtying what little paint that could be slapped on in time. By the time #30 finally coupled to the train, it looked straight out of the pictures and videos of the last few days of steam, as though it had been run ragged to squeeze out what little cash it could before being tossed away for scrap when the shiny ne diesel arrived. Patrons gawked in awe at the sight. The ride was a tense one, with the engine making sounds they didnt think it should, praying that it doesnt derail because improper track maintenance, or break down. It did, 2 times in fact. They played them off as demonstrations on how the engineers of yore made field repairs. The delays caused them to be late, pressuring the engineer to go above the safe speed limit. luckily, they just barely make their slot, speeding down the mainline, hoping that another breakdown didnt occur. It did, but thankfully it occured at the station where, they again played it off as a demonstration (no mechanical issue of the same part occured twice) and tensely went back home. No more breakdowns occurred and the train safely returned home. It wasnt a rousing success, the karens complained and children loved it, all to be expected. This was to be expected. What they didn't expect was that the railfans also loved it. This was a surprise because it was assumed that they would be the first in line to complain about the condition of the locomotive and rolling stock. Instead, they loved it because it felt like they were right in the dying embers of steam traction. I know that writing is, by no means, an easy task, and to be perfectly honest, the episode wasn't bad, just boring. And, as seen in the San Juan series, you guys are great at writing, and if what everyone says is accurate, meticulous in your research. The show you have created, which by no means is perfect, has huge potential and im interested to see where you take it. Thank you for taking your time to read a comment that can best be described as an essay, and happy trails.
