Kestrels have a special place in my heart. My big brother brought home five babies when their tree nest was chopped down at his school. We fed them and raised them to adults. There were no places to get help back then about seventy years ago. We fed them liver because it was free from the butcher. They grew to be pretty healthy birds. I am so glad there are conservation programs now… great videos 🦅🥰💕👍

I've been a falconer off and on for 50+ years and I am still captivated by videos like this. Birds of prey are one of the most fascinating subjects. Most people don't realize just how hard these birds work to get a meal, even when they don't have additional mouths to feed. Kudos to helping them out with food; I would suggest in the future bringing them mice or small rats whole or provide a small feeding station nearby for the parents (we falconers do this when "hacking" young birds. I still find myself providing meals for wild birds of prey as they passage through in the spring and fall (helps to keep them away from my domestic poultry and pigeons).

I used to be a falconer too my first birds were kestrels and like the wild birds the females were always a bit more feisty I did have a feeding station but crows, jackdaw’s and stoats/ weasels would often get the food first I have trained the male to go down a tunnel on a steal pole to keep out some of the competition Thankfully this year is better for food and they have 5 chicks which will be fledging soon Check out my live cameras to see them

@Van Chao In times of famine humans "would feed on other humans". There's no would or could. They did it. All over the history there're tragic stories of people breaking the taboo to survive The sad part of it is they usually didn't gain from it much. Usually people eat other people out of desperation. They feed on the already dead, those who were similarly affected by the famine. It means they didn't have much fat or even muscles anymore. So even breaking the taboo didn't provide much sustenance

I love, how you san clearly see that these creatures bear emotions. Whenever Robert put his hand in the nest, the chicks backed up against the wall, sunk down their shoulders, their eyes got wide, they cried out nervously, and the little legs quivered with fear. It's amazing to see that even birds carry such emotions that humans do, and I think it's a truly wonderful thing to see and appreciate. In some ways, they're just like us.

Mammals are the only taxa with facial muscles that are designed for facial expressions. Evolutionarily this is thought to have happened to aid in communication and in suckling. While other taxa that have faces obviously have muscles present in them, this means that birds don't have the control/muscles possible to make facial expressions. As much as people like to anthropomorphize them ("he looks happy when you pet him!") it is not possible for us to tell really
@MB2.0

Even the descriptions of these behaviors are problematic as they are inherently assigning a emotional trait to a behavior, ie "depression-like" implies that those behaviors are consistent with depression, but we can't confirm that those animals experience depression to begin with, making it impossible to reliably associate those behaviors with the emotional state. I think it's a major issue with using animals, particularly non-primate animals, for behavioral research. It all basically boils down to assumptions and poorly evidenced interpretations. For example you can talk about a "mouse trying to get out of a cylinder filled with water", and the generally accepted interpretation of ceasing to attempt to get out as "depression-like behavior", when it could just as easily be interpreted as "preserving energy for future opportunities", which would be the polar opposite of a depression-based behavioral alteration! There's a ton of ambiguous behaviors like that which are inherently subject to biased interpretation by the researcher. That doesn't mean that these studies or that field of research isn't without value, but I'm always astounded at the lack of questioning interpretations of animal behaviors when I read animal model papers. Even with more objective models, such as neural activity, there's still a huge assumption that the structures, individually and as an integrated whole, function similarly to humans - and we know this often isn't the case, as evidenced by the number of drug trials that showed results in animals, but flame out when tried in humans!

@@MB2.0 Its not just facial expressions that show emotion. Body language, especially in non mammalian animals, is all of their emotional expression. The way he pauses, looks away the looks back makes it look like he is confused.

Such a joy to see the 3 young kestrels with mum on the branch at 35:45. Nature is cruel, ruthless, perfect and beautiful all at the same time. Sometimes it's really difficult to reconcile the different ends of the spectrum. I guess that when the chick dies, it becomes a food source, especially if the others are struggling. Very sad but also shows us how strong the survival instinct is. Thanks Robert, another wonderful video. God bless you.
