When we did search and rescue, we wore chest rigs for 2 way radios, GPS, maps and compass, cell phones, note pad and pens along with anything else we needed in a hurry without removing our backpack every time. A chest rig is for smart people.

There are other ways besides backpacks and chest rigs. A belt/harness system allows for a lot of access to pouches that doesn't sit on your chest like a 'girlie man'!

@@SharkWhisperer1988 The one I got is just a Conterra double radio rig with a cell phone pouch but if you carry the cell on your belt then a GPS would fit right in there.

@@paul7754 Yes, and no. What if you are wearing a large backpack with a hip belt for example? Will it be that comfy to have your stuff on the belt underneath? For me, the chest rig makes perfect sense - all hiking equipment I had to carry in my cargo pockets, shirt pockets, in belt pouches, rucksack slings or hung over the neck, now I have packed in one chest rig. I can cross a stream or shallow river with it, without worrying about my camera, or lighter. I tried it first time a few weeks ago, and I'm totally sold on it.

@@ifyoudontfailyouarenoteven6210 Who said anything about 'comfort'? Just sounds like a 'heat trap' for those who move aggressively in humid and/or hot conditions. Ask the grunts in jungle warfare training. I get the 'above waterline' advantage but again there are other ways. I really like to see what's in front of my feet when I need to move fast.

I have used a HPG recon and SAR chest rig for years. I use them for everything! Hunting, fishing, ATV’s, you name it. Definitely recommended piece of gear! I also added a Blue Force Gear triple mag pouch to my HPG Recon rig. It allows to carry mags and also my cell phone to hands free record when I’m hunting 😉

I'd probably sew paracord to the inside to keep the front flap from going all the way down. Bungee cord over the long term wears out faster. Love the rig. Didn't know you were in Georgia. Hello from South Carolina.

I have a Hill People Gear SAR for work. And the smaller Runners Bag for my 10mm with a bino case molle’d on for hunting or anytime I’m out with a big pack. They keep stuff concealed and protected. However, a draw is awkward and can flag anybody to my left.

So after watching this video and do some reflection, I have several thoughts. While I was in and deployed, I saw several people with chest rigs and IOTV's. Mostly it was ODA and SFAB. I never wore much on the front other than ammo pouches. Reasons where several. If in a vehicle, slim and compact needed in case of emergency. On dismount, slim in case of having to take cover in prone and getting close to ground as possible. Also the less stuff everyone had and all looked fairly similar, often times that could mean less of a bullet magnet. Thinking from an enemy perspective, he looks important because of that "big square pouch" and the others don't have. So a uniformity thing. Now that I'm out like you, I can see it being an option for immediate needed items like compass, pen paper, map spare batteries etc. However, while I'm not opposed to trying one out, it's not in the cards currently. I do have small pouches I can attach to my carrier for small items and still be able to get to the main needed accessories on the bottom portion.

For non tactical activities I’m a belt kit and or day pack guy. That said I am going to try a FLIC with some pounces. Which has good ventilation and distributes the contents and weight evenly. I don’t like a rack like Dolly Parton right out in front. Nor my handgun carried concealed on my chest either. And I don’t double stack on my plate carrier. I carry extra mags on my belt. Slim and trim profile works for me.

Great Video ! The 5.11 is on the small side with a couple of pockets (! ! !) to keep from carrying to much weight ! More than one pocket is best... The two big pockets are divided between the Nav Kit and a First Aid Kit ! On the outside is a retractable ID tethered to the Fox 40 whistle. One great item to carry is a Faraday Bag for the cellphone and two-way radios ! Some Russians where targeted because they used their cellphones too much in a war zone ! tjl

As per the standard for Stokermatic's content. This is another great gear review! I've been eyeing the Full Tag Tactical chest rig for many months. I like it, I like that it is American Made! I currently have the Condor Chest Rig. It's durable but I wish it was made in the USA. I beat the daylights out of it and modified it to carry admin stuff. For my next Chest Rig, I will very seriously consider the Full Tang Tactical. It's featured packed!

Navy didn't use chest rigs except for some of the guys that wore bras, I kept my soap on a rope. I've tried carrying a camera and some gear (10 lbs) with basically a cheap backpack reversed. It seemed to restrict breathing. That could be because of the cobbled together rig. This, that you have, is fascinating! I think my only question is, do you want a harness that isn't secured to you when you take the pack off? If it falls off, for instance, on the tip of Half Dome, it could be a long walk to retrieve it.

Advantages: 1) Handiness of access to frequently needed items; 2) Helps to balance weight of your rucksack - when you need to carry a teammate’s ruck, as well as your own, carry his on your front. Disadvantage: When you have to hit the dirt immediately (as in immediate action) anything you wear on your front will make you, from head to butt, stick up just high enough to maybe get you killed by low grazing fire.

I like it. What really gets my attention is the mag pouches. If I wasn't already wearing a different kind of chest rig by necessity, i'd buy one. As it is, i'd probably never wear the full tang rig, even though i'd want to. That and my entire rig has become based on certain items being in certain locations. I think chest rigs in general are great because it allows you to drop your pack but keep the necessities on you at all times. Only problem with them is if it's hot, as your basically clam shelled between your chest rig and your pack. If it's colder, it works to your advantage.

I run a taps rig, because I know it and am comfortable with it. I can load it up or down, and while it ain't the most fancy, nor newest and greatest, it does whatever I need it to do. I upgraded a few things on it to make it a bit more comfortable, but as I said it does the job, I know the platform well from going to war with it, and hopefully I never need it, but if I do it is tried and tested.

I have a plate carrier with a detachable bag on the back and I keep my chest rig straps in it and my front placard can be taken off my carrier and used as a micro chest rig for thick wooded areas where plate carriers are basically useless due to weight and movement... I always make sure every piece of gear I have is able to be used with every other piece of gear.

I believe that for the situations a citizen may find him self in, ALICE, PLCE, and other harness systems are a better choice. I don't think there is anything effeminates or masculine about either choice, just that a harness is more ideal for a broader range of jobs, like fieldcraft/bushcraft, hiking or even crawling. More breathable, better placement on your body for a wider range of motion and can carry a larger load. A chestrig would only be considered if combat was a high possibility and I needed to run plates or additional combat gear ontop of what I already had - which is unlikely. As a Citizen I'm not looking to take on Fallujah.
