i, fortunately, live full time in the lower mainland of b.c. and seldom get cold weather...i have a four season trailer perked at a private marina right on the fraser river...with cheap rent and free power...i have lived without a 'house' for over 10 years and live on my pension in my 'home'...did the boat for 8 years now the trailer...just love the freedom to pick up and go when i want to !!!

Excellent information. I was a RV full timer for about 5 years(I am U.S. citizen). Went off the road about 4/5 years ago to marry my Canadian partner, and live in Canada now. I have been getting the urge again, but with the health care and other things you mentioned, I too, have been trying to figure out how it can be done now that I am a resident of Canada. You make some very excellent points. The nice thing about being retired, is you can buy a house/apartment in lower demand markets. No way you could do this in one of the big cities anymore.

You don't need to be retired. My plan is to pick up a cheap piece of land with a shack on it and use that as my permanent address. If you go to the boonies, you can get one for less than 10,000, and this gives you a place to land if you need to recover from an illness.

An inexpensive little condo is good too! That's what we will do! Here in Calgary, we pay about $500 monthly for basic expenses on the condo which is cheaper then small apartments or basement suites. And we can hit the road anytime and go anywhere! We keep our medical, vehicle insurance, and all the basics we need! Yes, we RV during the warmer months and spend the Christmas seasons with our families! We find part-time RVing works better for us, even though we can be gone for a long period of time, we would miss our kids, and grandkids way too much! This way we come and go as we feel!

Some interesting points. Especially the Health Care issues. I also live in Niagara Falls and have wintered in Florida. I have never been asked if I have a permeant residence in Canada when entering the US. At least not yet. Granted I am not full-time at the present. As a matter of interest I have a Class B so I can travel and explore rather than park at one location for long periods of time. Since I now travel alone it's not an issue for me.

The best way is to own a house, and keep a bedroom or garage locked for storage while in traveling, rent out other bedrooms to get some cash to cover travel cost. Then you can still leaglly use this address.

You mentioned all the road block that's been keeping me from RV'ing longer than 6 months at the time. I was hoping for some solutions that doesn't require paying for a place that I wont use. As Canadians they also ding us with the RV insurance if living full time in your RV (in Alberta). Also your house wont be covered for anything at all, if someone brake in and still stuff or a pipe breaks... if away for more than TWO WEEKS! Ridiculous! For travel bugs, It's almost like a wall less prison.

Just saw this video. Was thinking living in a Class C with my dog. However not many video's on living in an RV in Ontario Canada while still working. Places to stay at especially in the winter. It's 2022 now, 7 years ago and unfortunately the housing market and apartment's are for rent are sky high. For a one bedroom not counting a Pet I've seen this year $1000 - $2000. This is why I'm looking into a Class C RV tow my car. I'm unable to afford those prices and the space they have is about 700s feet. It's getting worse for Ontarians.

You'll freeze in an RV during an Ontario winter, they simply aren't built for it. Only way to do it is to work remotely and head south for the winter as this video talks about. Channel on here "foresty forest" did live in a minivan in the GTA area for a couple winters, but now he's out west in a bigger van.

In Alberta we have to be employed and pay % of wages monthly for healthcare, so it's not free here. Now they're adding a tax to that expense so the cost is going well over $1000 a month, I think we're paying right now. Then the amount we're allowed is 1000$ a year for dental. Lol pointless. I used to have a po box for $100 a year and I don't think I needed an address to have it, might have to look into that option. An apartment or a home while being gone is hard too. Laws here say someone has to be at the residence at all times in order to have insurance coverage and some utilities demand another contact in case you're unavailable. Always something. Lol

TONS OF VANARCHY your universal health care is your Alberta Health Care card and is free if you reside in Alberta for I believe at least 6 months of the year...your Health, Dental, Disability and Life Insurance Benefits is what you are paying for

It means the product researched, tested and produced by the American multi-national Johnson & Johnson through their subsidiary Depuy Orthopedics is the source of 'bad medicine'. Great video. You hit all the important points. One newer issue is the whole passport swipe requirements. If you stay too long in the US you could lose your Canadian residency status and be subject to US Federal tax on your world wide income. One great solution for people who have a cottage is to make that their permanent residence - however, not everyone has a cottage. An economical apartment in a smaller urban area is probably the way to go. Hope you realize your dream.

+Carlton McEachern Thanks for the comment. I didn't know about the residency thing, but am aware of the taxation issue from working in both countries years ago. I lived in Canada but worked in the States. Regarding that, you can chose which country to pay taxes in and in my case I chose Canada and received back all the American withholds including FICA, though it was added to my Canadian worldwide income and taxed.

I have been full time since 2005. Now in Key West Fl on a base camp lot with a permanent address. Half Canadian. What about those people in Canada who travel for a living? How do they get health insurance if they are never in one place for five months?

I know my dads friends have not lived in Canada for years but come every summer to still be eligible for health care ...and a girl I know who I went to school with wh lives in the usa I realized does the same spend a few weeks in canada each year.

suzieq0452 How do you know they are not paying taxes in Canada? There is no mention of it in the comment. Even if on a pension and paying the (in BC ) MSP premiums, I should still be entitled to healthcare if I was to RV full time even out of province, since it is paid for out our taxes and MSP premiums where applicable. The permanent residency require seems to be unnecessary beyond indicating which provincial plan covers you. No one is cheating or scamming anybody if the federal and provincial taxes plus premiums are paid.

honestly as a Canadian myself? ask your kids to use their address, the selfishness is theirs if they refuse. mail? our pensions are direct deposit, all financial transactions are now all on line, besides what mail? the only mail I ever get are mcdonalds flyers. The government just makes stupid rules per Ottawa lobbyists, and unless your trouble with Revenue Canada no one government agency is going to track your banking statements knowing you withdraw money from all over Canada. I realize your being 100% percent law abiding, but even the powers that be would look at you and say "are you nuts, we dont care what you do" and they dont because it just causes them more work. I went to get the photo health card (upgrade from the red/white one) and they said I wasn't even in the system and asked if I had been out of the country. I said no. Clearly the health dept. doesn't even communicate with any other dept otherwise they would have been able to find me. The address they had on file for me was somewhere we lived for a couple years, 30 years ago. I had also been to the hospital with that red/white card and no questions asked a few years prior. If they can't even get that right.... That said, use whatever address you want just make sure you cross back into Ontario within 183 days, they would have no way of knowing if you went directly to the east or west coast right after, IF they even track your comings and goings at the border.

Very correct Kevin. There is talk of extending it from six to seven months, being pushed by Florida to take advantage of the snowbirds. There are billions at stake for Florida and I've heard it will happen. Until then, 180 days or you pay.

For our American friends; so you understand that what his talking about reference health care. It is not free! It is embedded in our taxes. So only the unemployed get “free” health care. What it does mean is that, what ever is covered by your provincial healthcare plan, you won’t be billed directly for any service regardless of the cost. There is a tendency with people to believe something government provided is somehow free.

@@rynem-setapartmind8906 You buy a cheap house in the boonies not only as a permanent address but also as an investment, can be found for well under 100K, mortgage a few hundred bucks. Then hit the road south in December and come back in April or May. Health care isn't the main issue, doubtful they'll even let you into the US without a reason to come back here. There is a channel "just in a van" that had troubles at the border because he didn't book anything or have his act together. Dont pull up and tell them you're gonna stay at truck stops and walmarts lol.

Hi Debra, thanks for the comment. I was in the same boat and realized on clear sober thought, this isn't as simple as I'd like. That said, five months in Ontario? Who's to know if you took a few weeks and went to the Maritimes, or Quebec during the summer. So in that sense, it isn't as bad as it appears, but I do think a small apartment is in the least a necessity. Wishing you the best.

Have you considered buying an acre or two of vacant land up north to park your RV in the summer and call home while living off grid to avoid our high hydro rates. You would maintain your residency status for OHIP and even get the northern discount on your income tax.

THANK YOU your video was so helpful esp. ohip, mailing address etc. I have spent the last 5 months lookingnto see what if any parks were 4 season. what I have found is this: the 4 season parks will not allow motor homes in ! the conservation (some ) will let motor homes inform jan. to whenever. 1 park closes for maintenance in dec. I have a horse that is boarded so the chances of me being gone for 1-6 months are nil to next to none. therefore I was limited to 1 hr max travel time to the barn. my main issue is this; I want out of the city. I moved down from parry sound 4 yrs ago as ploughing myself out in winter and cutting in the summer. so right now am bouncing back and forth from yes to not possible unless I sell my horse which I will not do. thank you again..who knows, maybe it will become more yes

tried that, and even bought the t-shirt being retired at $44 PER NIGHT it sure adds up and one I don't want nor afford. so, it was fun looking but looks like what is , is. not a problem, I have always found that when 1 door shuts, another opens. will keep your site and if anything changes will contact you. will probably have a ton of questions . ENJOY and keep on boondocking lol just watch the bears. youngsters are so curious..had one decide to check out my garage when I lived north...no idea where mom was shut the dogs in and just enjoyed him or her.no damage so all was well : ) take care and thanks

What's the story for RVers who want to spend time in the USA? Residency problems in the USA. 6 months max. If I'm not in Québec 6 months, or if I transfer my driver's license to Newfoundland, even for 2 months, they can disqualify. I switched to a Newfoundland licence and didn't renew my Québec license, who tell the health card people. (I'm not saying I have a license in two provinces now.) My mother is elderly in Newfoundland and I spend a lot of time there. "Only short" visits. I have learned to keep my mouth shut. I use words like vacation, temporary, but never admit to anything. I still have a house in my town. One day, maybe, I will simply pay part of my daughter's rent or mortgage.

You've brought up some issues regarding full time rving in Canada that I hadn't considered. I too am considering going full time, I'll have to think more about that after watching your video. Which brings up another question/issue - what about Canada pensions? I thought about spending several months in the United States during the year when its cold in Canada then returning to Canada when it's warmer (hard to beat our summers for beauty and temperatures). Is there a time limit on the length of stay outside of Canada if one is living on Canada pensions?

April Moon you are only allowed in the US for 182 days per year maximum. Your pensions are not affected. They still get deposited in your Canadian bank account. You’ve earned them and they are not taken away when traveling. I have Canadian friends who retired and moved to Ecuador and they still receive their CPP and OAS. They don’t qualify for the GIS supplement as that is tied to provincial residency.

it's not consecutive and if you weren't in ontario for 5 months and travel in canada it's difficult for them to prove but there are so few places to boondock you could be der patrolcaught, time spent in the US is now tracked.

I was thinking to live the RV life to save on rent but now I have to rethink it. I am 53 and my kids are leaving home. Don't have money to buy a home so I was thinking it would be cheaper to live in an RV full-time. Is it cheaper than rent?

In theory you could live down south on BLM land for free in the winter and on crown land up here in the summer for free, but that's dry camping and you'll need to have your rig set up for it (lots of solar and lithium batteries). Monthly fees for a spot in an RV park with full hook ups isn't cheap.

Regarding subject #1, you state that Ontario resident will loose OHIP if not in Ontario for 5 months. But you don't explain who is going to find out. What agency is following your movements if you leave the borders of Ontario? Whos reporting information to the OHIP branch? If your healthy and not using OHIP how does anyone know if your in Ontario or not?

Hello Boondocking Bears.Videos are great,I am a new subscriber just signed in.I am 65,wife(the Boss)is 70.We have a converted 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan to a camper van.Went to the Maritimes last year for 16 days and North Ontario and Ottawa for 10 days this year.Staying at Hotel Walmart all the time.Next year we will go west to Vancouver Island and check places along our travels on where to live after we sell our house in Mississauga.We are both retired.I have read all the previews comments posted but nothing talked about the expensive All Inclusive Medical insurance one must buy before travelling to the US.You have gone there before and because we are the same age,please give me your advise.RBC insurance is charging me and my wife just under $3000 for 3 months.Thats restrictive.If not in the US,the Okanagan Valley or the Comox Valley are good too and still be in Canada. though not as warm as Arizona in the winter.My wife says hi to little Bear.

In a sense that is true, but with voluntary parole if you want free healthcare. And Ontario is vast and beautiful, with most of my family here, doesn't seem like much of a sentence. I suppose it is better than being prisoner to an HMO.

Not many can afford both life styles. RV and a home unless it is an apartment. The prices of gas are so expensive in Canada for anything larger then a van. I would so love the life style of RV living but I for one can't afford to have two homes. I have 3 years left before I retire. I can only dream and live in my apartment here in Ontario, and get my fix watching others do it on KZbin. Great video, very Informative.

From what I can tell, there is no savings and reducing the cost of living from RVing in Canada. You still need a landbase home and you have to pay taxes on that. We hoped to find a way to reduce the cost of living by RVing and it doesn't seem to be an option for Canadians.

What about setting up your address with a family member? They would never know you weren't there for 5 months. You'll have issues getting over the border w/o a home or bills but you can travel Canada or stay out west for the winters in your RV.

Most people understand nothing is free. When referring to free is this context, it means citizens do not have to have their wallets with them when entering a doctor's office, clinic or hospital to receive medical attention. Nor will they have a bill when they leave (some elective procedures exempt). So from that perspective, it is free at point of contact.

Health care is not free in Canada! If you all dont know Canada is pay , pay, pay. Theres a few good winter campgrounds, but same thing pay, pay pay! if you dont want to have money extorteted from you till the day you die, kanada is extremley expensive to live and get sick!!!!!

Though you were upset and concerned then, that was not the time or place to abandon your screaming child on the side of an icy snoowing hill in the vehicle alone telling him or her " you just stay"...that crash saved him from a head on with that semi. Way to fast to jump out into traffic passing you on the road. What if the kids or he lost you too? Y'all are lucky
