Me too. Of course there are millions of people descended from people like Charlemagne and Rollo. It's still cool to know. I was actually a huge fan of the fictional TV show "Vikings" when I realized that I was a descendant of Rollo. So, yeah, it was pretty cool to find out. You are right about all of us carrying history. I think that pride in ones ancestors has a very positive impact on how we carry ourselves today. It definitely lends credence to the old ways of ancestor worship. Pride is a very important thing to have.

@@letsdothis9063 - It’s so crazy 😜 but, so am I. If you have your ancestors back far enough (including proof of DNA 🧬 that matches other people in the present time) this huge ancestry website can fill in the gaps going further back in time. I suppose that’s why they can say Charlemagne is The Father of Europe (most Europeans)!? I was so excited when I found Rollo 😮! I knew I had Norman roots that came to England with William The Conqueror but, not about Rollo?! However, as @Ella Bee commented above, we are all related it seems to many of the people who opposed one another at times- My DNA 🧬 and ancestry includes Anglo-Saxon, Celts, etc. DNA 🧬 is mainly split between England 🏴 and Scotland 🏴. I uploaded my DNA 🧬 data to a website that gets its information from a huge database in the USA and other countries. I think it’s called “Family Search”. Its good that the truth is known about how the Frankish kings and emperors were trying to destroy paganism. I just think its sad that they threw away all of their earlier Germanic pagan roots to act like Romans... The same Romans that were killing them and making them slaves, before that...
@monkeymoment64782 жыл бұрын
The Romans were not doing that for a while by the time the Germanics migrated into their borders. Often times the Germanic tribes latinized and converted to Christianity when they moved into their borders. Looking at the situation from a purely pagan lens, it is reprehensible the way they acted towards their Germanic brethren in the east and the pagans, but you have to ask yourself what they stood to gain by remaining pagan, from a purely objective standpoint. The Franks conquered a large swathe of land and with it inherited its Roman population, which was largely Christian. History shows us that kingdoms ruled over by a foreign people who follow a different religion and are the minority tend not to last. Instead of acting as conquerors they partially adopted the Roman legacy as their own.

Respectfully, this whole begining of the video and what you're saying is a great case of confirmation bias. It outright ignores simple facts that make this "raids were retaliatory" narrative untrue. 1. Germans and Romans had a tribe by tribe relationship and were never wholly against one another. In fact, it was the German mercenaries employed by Rome that allowed for the western half to hold out for as long as it did, a good example being their joint effort against the Hunnic invasions. 2. Everyone enslaved everyone. Sometimes people are just better at it. Germans enslaved Germans, Germans enslaved Romans, Romans enslaved Germans, Romans enslaved Romans, etc. This myth of Germanic freedom fighters is ignorant. They, like everyone else in the world, had slavery. 3. The northmen of Scandinavia had a raiding culture as far back as the Nordic Bronze age and probably even further back during the Mesolithic. It wasn't a retaliation against the Franks, or some anti Christian campaign, or any of this silliness. Those same Scandinavians were very ok with converting to Christianity when it was more profitable for them. Examples like Guthrum, the later Norwegian and Danish Kings, amongst others are perfect examples.

Fun fact the first Norse raid in the British isles wasn’t the raid of Lindisfarne in 793. The first Norse viking raid actually occurred in the summer of 789 known as the raid on the Isle of Portland. According to legend men from Norway raided an Anglo Saxon trading port via long ship. It’s said the Norse raided the entire dock and killed a royal Reeve. There we’re also records of Norse raiders in Scotland and northern England before 793 but we don’t really have many written records on them. My theory is the reason why Lindisfarne was recorded as the first raid was for Christian propaganda as raiding docks and towns was common before the Norse raids (many records prove that picts, frisians and scotti raided ports and towns on a regular basis), but raiding churches and holy sites was a completely new thing. The raid of Lindisfarne was also easier to propagandize on as all the Anglos, Jutes and Saxons were unified under Christianity but they were not completely unified tribally at this time.

The Roman's even built Hadrians wall to keep the Scotti and picts from raiding. Scotti was Latin for Irish, and the Irish established Gaelic culture in Scotland at this time. Originally scotti was used almost as the word viking is used. So a Scotti is to a Gael what a viking is to a Norseman.

This got me thinking about the expansion of Islam around that time, especially up through Spain. How would Europe have fared without Christian resistance? Christianity was the big unifier, even if often forced, which has kept Islam at bay until very recently. I think either way, paganism in Europe would have been essentially eliminated.
@Victor_aeternus002 Жыл бұрын
One could argue that if Christianity never spread like it did in our timeline, then Islam would not exist. This is because Islam emerged in the arabian peninsula after it became a melting pot of different religions, something that is also seen in Islam itself even today. The God in Islam is the same as in Judaism and the old testament in christianity, Jesus is an important prophet in Islam by the name Isa, the Kaaba and the pilgrimage to it were from the pre-islamic arabian religion etc.

I mean their conversion, and the conversion of any of the other Pagans whether Germanic or not, wouldn’t have been instantaneous. It involved a lot of harmonization between the pagan faiths and Christianity, and like you said often times people would even still worship both gods. Naturally over time Christianity would win out and worship would solidify. But early Christianity wouldn’t have been as dogmatic and solid as Christianity in the high or late medieval era, when the hold of church over people was much stronger

Again I'm seeing a lot similarities between the Norse and Native Americans. In the late 1800s speaking any Native American language or practicing any traditional native custom was outlawed. Which led to the Massacre at Wounded Knee, the 7th Cavalry wiped out over a hundred unarmed men, women, children and elderly people, with cannon fire. All because the Lakota people were practicing their traditional Sun Dance.
@asgrim15132 жыл бұрын
U see the similarities because it really is the exact same thing, Christians forcing and wanting to wipe out paganism in northern Europe slaughtering if they don't want to. Americans slaughtering the natives and wanting to destroy their religion and way of life. There is absolutely no difference.

But in the ensuing years, is there any definite definition of "English"? I may be a bit off topic, but I've just been trying to sort that out quite a bit lately.

Will you please make a video addressing spitefulness in pagan culture. Nobody likes to talk about it but it's very true and very alive within the modern Norse pagan societies. Both physically and online. This form of passive aggressive spitefulness is specifically targeted towards people who want to interpret the religion in their own way, which is a big No-No I'm starting to see within the pagan society. (Don't get me wrong I appreciate and would like the source material and knowledge we know about the old religion to be as accurate as possible. But at the same time it's like a Catholic Christian from Rome scorning an American Christian who grew up like every other normal American citizen, for not knowing or misinterpreting things the way they perceive it.) Secondly to address the spitefulness pagans have for Christianity in general. Every society has done heinous things, every religion too. But it doesn't mean we can't get along and have a better future now. Having a video covering this topic would be greatly much appreciated. I think having something like this to discover would help a lot of pagans and Christians alike to get along better.Sometimes we get so lost in what we want to be correct, we end up losing what it means all together.
@Explorer273 Жыл бұрын
You see this from a very American viewpoint. What you don't understand is that there are people who disapprove of Americans appropriating our culture. "Norse pagans" want to be the ones defining the religion and do so online, just take a look at wikipedia. We know that it's more a culture than a religion and they were never pagan because by now we would have found evidence supporting that in the ground and there is almost nothing. I know this isn't really a problem because we have had this for many years by now. A new community starts as asatro and after a while it changes it's name to distance itself from the gods or just dies off. This happens because asatro, and Norse paganism, is based on 19th century misinterpretations and misunderstandings of the eddas. The oldest community in Sweden has been around since the early nineties and no longer even mention the gods on the website. The same is going to happen to Norse paganism because it doesn't work as the religion people want to replace christianity. There isn't a single line about how to worship the gods anywhere. The most simple and obvious explanation would be that they didn't. Worship is a very christian thing and you can't make deals with the gods like Romans pagans tried to do. Much of this culture is still around forty generations later because it was never passed from parents to children but from grandparents to grandchildren which means the Viking age is just twenty generations away and in reality it's more like fifteen. Getting along with "Norse pagans"? I don't think that's possible but all I have to do is let it run it's course. As usual.
