Hey everyone! Welcome to our first long-format video on the homestead channel. Today, we're giving you an in-depth tour of our unique underground greenhouse. This space is a labor of love, built with sustainable materials found right here on our property in the beautiful Colorado mountains.
As we start the tour, you'll see the beautiful flowerbed along the south wall of the greenhouse. This bed is filled with a variety of flowers that thrive in the optimal sunlight the wall receives. The careful placement ensures that the plants get just the right amount of light, creating a vibrant and healthy flowerbed.
Next, we'll show you the impressive rock wall we've constructed. Using rocks collected from our property, we've built a natural and sturdy wall that not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also provides excellent insulation for the greenhouse. The rock wall is a testament to our commitment to utilizing local, natural resources.
Moving along, you'll see the shelves we've dug out of the wall. These shelves are perfect for storage and display, carved directly into the rock. This not only saves space but also integrates seamlessly into the structure of the greenhouse, maintaining its natural look and feel.
We’ve also repurposed downed trees to create support beams for the greenhouse. These sturdy beams provide essential structural support, showcasing our dedication to reusing materials and minimizing waste. The natural wood beams add a rustic charm to the space, blending functionality with beauty.
One of the unique features of our greenhouse is the handmade ladder, crafted from downed trees. This ladder is not only functional but also adds to the rustic and handmade aesthetic of the greenhouse. It’s a perfect example of how we incorporate natural elements into our design.
Finally, we’ll give you a comprehensive look at the entire underground greenhouse. You’ll see how all these elements come together to create a sustainable, efficient, and beautiful growing space. From the flowerbeds to the rock walls, shelves, support beams, and ladder, every part of the greenhouse is designed with sustainability and practicality in mind.
Join us on this tour to see how we’ve transformed natural materials into a thriving greenhouse that supports our homesteading lifestyle. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more homestead adventures, sustainable living tips, and daily life updates from our beautiful Colorado mountains. Thanks for watching!

I really like the idea that you recycle and use scrap material to build your greenhouse . I find it to be a total waste on money to build fancy glass and and aluminum greenhouses unless you are going commercial

@wildwithnature I'm near Salem, Oregon where at the moment, it's under 30⁰ outside though we don't usually stay this cold very long

Oh wow the geothermal heating will definitely help! We get down to -20 and still have grass growing in the walipini. Our tomatoes always grow wild in here as well. I hope it does the trick for you!!

Does it flood when it rains? what did/do you do to prevent flooding? Thanks for answering. :)
@wildwithnature
@wildwithnature 2 ай бұрын
It doesn’t! We live in a pretty dry climate so we don’t get a lot of rain at one time. We did stack rocks around the outside of the frame to hold the frame in place but also act as a wall / barrier. We haven’t had flooding issues since we built this a few years ago! Thanks for asking!! 💜💜

Very cool! How does it fare in the winter? Does it stay relatively warm inside? I have a hoop house and Intend to do exactly this.

The walipini extends our season on each end, we’re in zone 4b. We plant outside mid June to harvest late September. In the walipini, we start in Feb & harvest late Oct. it’s warmer in spring-fall due to the sun (we’re high altitude) but the winters are so harsh out here, it’s too cold with just the hoop house. In the summer, the walipini gets up to 30° warmer than the outside temps. It’s usually around 20° warmer than outside in spring / fall. We’re working on ways to winterize this space as is before we built a more stable roof. We also get tons of snow & have had hoops collapse 🫠 but I totally recommend a walipini. If you want to hear more just send over any questions!

How hot does it stay in the winter?
@wildwithnature
@wildwithnature 5 ай бұрын
Usually around 20-25° warmer than outside temps! We’re planning on building a more solid roof which will help trap heat, this hoop house roof is pretty drafty even with rocks & solid piled around the outside.

@@8SerketSidi8 yess!! I would totally recommend, it’s been a huge game changer for us! We hand dug it and popped the hoop house over. It took a few months to dig but otherwise it was quick to set up!!
