Trakai Island Castle (Lithuanian: Trakų salos pilis) is an island castle in Trakai, Lithuania, on an island in Lake Galvė. The complex is now one of the most famous sights in Lithuania and is used as a museum.
Built a first castle in the second half of the 14th century under Prince Kęstutis. In 1377 it was attacked by the crusaders of the Teutonic Order. Among the owners of the castle was Prince Gediminas, he used the castle in Trakai as a residence for a time before founding the new capital Vilnius. The castle became the scene of the conflict between Prince Vytautas and Władysław II. Jagiełło over the title of Grand Duke of Lithuania. Vytautas settled Karaimen as bodyguards in the village in 1397, in addition to Tatars. After the Battle of Tannenberg in 1410, the castle lost its military importance. Since the beginning of the 20th century the castle was rebuilt and restored in the decayed parts. Even in the period of the Second World War the restoration works were continued in a limited way.
The castle is located on an island between the Galvė Lake, the Lukos or Bernardinų Lake and the Totoriškių Lake and lies north of the present Trakai town. A bridge leads from the shore to the gatehouse, which is built into the outer fortification wall with battlements and three massive round corner towers. The symmetrically arranged main buildings with the donjon in their center are located on a raised plateau and are accessible via a bridge. This plateau is protected by another fortification wall. The dungeon-like intermediate area used to be filled with water due to a higher water level. From the courtyard, wooden stairs and external corridors provide access to the rooms up to the second floor.
The museum located in the main buildings goes into the history of the castle and exhibits excavation finds. It shows the phases of the castle's reconstruction works and also has models of the castle. It also deals with the tradition of Tatars and Karaimen.
