I've knitted this twice now for same man I simply changed the centre panel from one here to a double diamond centre panel. I've been knitting traditional Aran jumpers for more years than I want to admit too and this was so much fun to knit am now going to do it with double miss then twisted cables on both sidethen centre panel honeycomb my husband and son have as an jumpers in various colours and patterns they last for years looking great if care is taken when washing. Don't be put off if you've never knitted before this pattern has been so easily expained. I wish I'd found it when I first started knitting because !y first written pattern was so badly explained I was left actually in tears with frustration. Beautiful jumper easily explained and easily converted to other patterns too.

@@captaincrochet6483 your very welcome as I know how much trial and effort goes into making your own Patten's understandable to others. I do a lot of knitting always have for more years than you have been on this earth. Now I have retired I can relax and fully knit for pleasure I'm finding so much more gratification and am able to knit for others outside my circle of family and friends. I adore the traditional Aran patterns both from the Irish Ilse of Aran and the Scottish Arran island which is not too far from my home in fact my husband lived there as a boy. I have always crocheted as well as knitted in fact it was an old gentleman from Arran an ex fisherman who actually taught me the basics when I was in my mid teens. I love the traditional patterns and the stories behind them. In fact my old fisherman friend who has long since gone to his home port as he put it told of how after a really bad weekend of gales and storms how two boats and crews were lost it took some time to have everyone accounted for at the time, the crew from Fraserburgh were all identified to a man much sooner than those who were on an Icelandic vessel and it was solely down to the fact that everyone on board came from fishing families and each of course had their hand knitted jumpers ( sweaters to our American cousin's) each knitted to their respective families traditional Arran patterns ( just for this purpose of identification of a person was lost at sea and time or damages made identification by sight problematic). The Icelanders wore their own multi coloured hand knitted jumpers too and we or rather I was surprised to find out that as our cables, twists and diamonds etc pattern told their families stories so did the colours and patterns of the Icelandic vessel too. This caught my interest so I learned how to make these too. Today people forget the hard fact that whether the patterns knitted on what is known now as cable knitting actually started out as a way to identify the person who wore it in the event of a tragedy I should have commented on how in fact I actually knitted full pattern on both back and front of your jumper style simply because I have always done so. Once again to anyone who is hesitant to begin their own knitting project but love the idea of making this but feel that they lack experience to do so you will NEVER find an easier pattern than this every single step is not only clearly described but physically shown to you. Oh one more thing in Scotland ( and Ireland) it was expected that a young woman courting a fisherman made him a jumper in HIS families designated pattern knitting it while he was at sea and presenting him it before her future mother in law before the wedding took place.

Thank you so very much Captain .. the design is beautiful and very well explained 💖 Beginning to knit again after many years, this was an amazing tutorial to knit my sweater! I made one in beige without sleeves. This time I’m inspired to knit a full sweater in the same color as your tutorial and hope it comes out as well as yours did. Please note: I’m a right handed knitter using the English method and yet I managed to follow your tutorial easily! Please do knit some more designs and share your tutorial so we can be inspired to knit more. A passion I’ve come back to, after ages, it seems. All thanks to your beautifully illustrated design guidance! Happy knitting 🙏

I am so looking forward to making this sweater, I've been looking for a tutorial and free pattern for a couple years. Hubby won't like the turtle neck but that's an easy change. Thank you! I'm glad I have a good set of interchangeable needles so I don't have to buy any. I wouldn't be able to use the nickel plated needles as I'm allergic. Then sew the pieces all together. I start knitting from the bottom up on all the parts. If you figure out your dimensions and how many stitches you need to cast on for each part, then I don't see why you wouldn't be able to make a tiny version. Good Luck!

I have a quick question. i appreciate that you don't need to do a tension swatch, but unfortunately my experience has always told me that I am MUCH tighter knitter/crocheter than most (I blame anxiety!) so I always have to practice my tension. In the video you mention 18 stitches by 24 rows = 4" (I assume garter stitch?) but then the video says that the cable panel you use 8mm to achieve the approximate 12cm/4&3/4" pattern at 29 stitches. What needle should I use to test my tension? the US 8 or US 6? or the 8mm that's written out (US 11)? or is the 8mm a typo since I don't see you mention it on the required needles?
@captaincrochet6483
@captaincrochet6483 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Good question. To keep it simple, I would advise you start your tension swatch with 5mm needles and adjust from there. 18x24=10cm for the Moss St. And The 29sts of the Center Cable panel =12cm. (I just measured my cable panel and mine measures 10cm not 12cm. So as long as you're within 10-12cm you'll be fine). I'm sure it will be a little wider when it is finished anyways because at the end I show you how to take in the sides to fit your body shape. Regarding the length, the entire sweater is custom so keep knitting longer or stop shorter at each body part to custom fit to you. I don't have a tension swatch for the beginning rib st because it is stretchy but whatever you main needle will be, go one size down for the rib st.

To make the gauge, do i need to use 8mm or 4/5mm needles. I'm a bit confused coz 8mm needles is not required to knit the cardigan. Thanks for the tutorial....❤️❤️❤️

@captaincrochet6483 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. If 8mm confuses you, and you have similar sized yarn as me, then just use 5mm and (4mm for the rib st). Unless your tension is really tight, then you can go up needle sizes, but you should be ok with 5mm and 4mm to keep it simple.

The pattern turns out to be very similar to the size that you'd buy from a store. So whatever sweater size you buy from a store, make the same size here. If you buy a M from the store, then a M from here should fit too.

Hey, i got a question, if i made your pattern could i sell my made piece online? I'm just a young boy looking any ways of making a simple buck out of one of my favorite hobbies, and since your videos explain how to make a sweater soo well could i use it as a base to make things i could sell, if not exactly your design can i at least change some things and sell it then? Don't want people to call me a rip off or anything soo thought i should ask

@captaincrochet6483
@captaincrochet6483 3 жыл бұрын
I think you can. Once you finish the front and back, then you sew it together. Instead of attaching sleeves, around the armholes maybe just do rib stitch for # of rows until it looks right.

@sephtis hargrove Hi. It is worsted weight and the gauge that is on the back of the yarn ball label (Not the sweater pattern but the yarn ball label) is 24 rows high by 18 sts wide = 4x4inches using 5mm knitting needles (uk6, us8) and each ball comes in 198 metres.

Can we knit in 7mm double pointed knitting needles
@captaincrochet6483
@captaincrochet6483 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. 7mm would make the stitches larger and therefore your overall piece larger. Because it is custom sweater, with 7mm needles, you would just have to stop knitting when you reach the correct lengths of each section that fit you as to not make the sweater too big. Also with 7mm needles you may have to cast on less sts or else the piece may be too wide- or you could use my sewing technique at the end of this tutorial to take in the sides more. You could use double pointed needles if you use many of them (like how you knit with them in the round eg making a sock- but you don't work in the round, you keep working flat.) That could be a possibility though I never tried it. But since you are casting on a lot of stitches, you would need room for all those stitches. Therefore I would recommend straight needles or circular needles for this project. But if the double pointed work for you with the larger stitches then go for it.
