Man, your are ClassD encyclopedia. Maybe one day you should do recommended components, like Hi-Fi Choice, based on actual design, reliability. When I spend couple of hundred bucks on something, I like the thing to be serviceable and repairable, old school, sort of like old AB class amps. But with Mosfets in parallel, yeah even the same batch doesn't guarantee that they be same one doesn't die. Maybe that's the reason Nelson Pass class A and AB big amps are so expensive, he most likely matches out tranies for his amps.

Subscribed. I'm interested in a full vs halfbridge video. Less interested in the 'amp guts' and components discussion and more interested in a practical comparison of the two technologies as monoblock bass amps. Some topics to cover: efficiency, sound quality, power rating at 1khz vs 40hz, which is better for daily driver vs spl lanes. I think the ultimate question a lot of people who are running 1000's of watts to their subs have is: why would I spend $0.25/watt on a halfbridge when I could spend $0.10/watt on a fullbridge? That adds up to 100's of dollars. What compromises are made?

Very impressive exposition. You really know your stuff. The output stage heating under low load is intriguing. @dailyfilmfix4694 жыл бұрын
I have a question unrelated to this video but it's about amps.. I have two active 75w rms Sony home theater subwoofers in ported enclosures with a 100w max output.. I think the low-pass cutout is around 35-40hz but I wanted to know if it is possible to increase the output of an amplifier in general and change the cutout range to a lower frequency? I think you mentioned about using more powerful components and possibly replacing the factory-installed ones but I can't quite remember exactly what you said.. I replaced the original subs with newer ones that can handle three times the power and they are 8 ohms like the factory speakers.. The old subs were damaged so I went on Ebay and bought two Logitech 10" Z5000 subs which sound pretty decent considering.. They were removed from enclosures that had bad amps and other issues but the speakers worked fine.. I know it probably sounds stupid but I was just curious and with your knowledge, you'd be one of the very people that could answer my questions.. Just so you know, I looked everywhere for two direct replacement mica series subs and even Sony didn't have any!!

Love the channel, it’s fun learning about class D stuff isn’t it? Anyway, thought I’d post cause I noticed something odd with the output section low side drive on this particular amp. Ideally you want the low and high side to see the same crisp drive wave, with appropriate amounts of dead time to prevent shoot through. High side looked great, but the rise time on the low side looked really slow to to me. This means the low side devices will spend a larger percentage of time in the linear region than the high side devices, which may explain the uneven heating. This can be caused by a number of factors, but my experience has been that gate resistor value has the largest impact on rise time all other things being equal (same drivers, same gate capacitance, ect). You might try experimenting with slightly lower gate resistor values to see if that makes the gate drive more square, just be careful you don’t exceed the drivers ability to provide gate current. Too low a resistance can overstress the driver and blow it. Data sheets will be your friend in this regard. Good luck with the repairs, if it were my amp I’d want to look at that low side to see if any improvements could be made.
@barevids4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Yeah the first time I got one of these in I messed around with gate driver values and different drivers and all sorts. Didn't seem to help at all.
@nickolaswilliams9354 жыл бұрын
Interesting that nothing helped, do you recall if the same wave was present at the output pin of the driver vs the FET itself? The increased time has to be coming from somewhere, either by additional capacitance elsewhere in the circuit or because the wave was generated that way to start off. With the size of these amplifiers, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if the gate traces on the PCB introduced additional unwanted capacitance which wasn’t taken into account during the design phase. Usually the data sheets for the drivers and TL494 chips tell you to be especially careful with layout, mainly for radiated EMF reasons. Anyhow, thanks for the response and keep up the good fight. Cheers!

@@barevids This type of thing can also be a PCB layout issue, for example longer traces cause unwanted inductance which can create a low pass filter with the Cgs of the FET and create the slow rise/ fall times. You have 3 options. 1) Connect the speaker negative of the DD amp to a speaker negative of the Rockford amp. MAKE SURE ITS ACTUALLY A NEGATIVE some will be marked as positive due to bridgemode. You want a negative terminal that is not marked as to be used for bridge. This will lower your noise but may not get rid of it completely. 2) install a ground loop isolator before the bass amp. This should kill the noise completely. 3) decouple the rca and output ground inside the DD amp. Unless you're familiar with modding amps... Don't do this. Go with option 2.

They aren't fragile. Buy a banda that will be alright.

Will there be time when full bridge amps will be built as strong as half bridge amps? The huge positive about full bridge amp is its size! We can install heavy amps underseat! I hope there will be reliable full bridge amps in future to last forever.
@barevids4 жыл бұрын
The banda Viking Amps are already more reliable than half bridge.

So would that make the audiopipe apcl3k full bridge?
@adamneill92374 жыл бұрын
No, it's literally a pair of 1500 boards strapped. That's why it's 3k @ 2ohm

Interesting to hear. I've never been a huge fan of full bridge design just because of reliability. Yeah, I'm overpaying for a half bridge Korean surfboard, but they are built like a brick shit house.
