The Jazz Messengers' album named 'Album of the year' recorded with this line-up is one the best that Blakey. ever made.

I saw these guys at Keystone Corner in San Francisco, Art Blakey had to stop the music at one point and tell the crowd to quiet down. He told them that if they wanted to talk, to go outside. "These musicians have worked hard at their craft and deserve to be heard." That was very, very cool.

you're exactly right, yet in his book "The Murder of Jazz" Eric Nisenson claims that the Jazz Messengers are trapped in 1956, which I totally disagree.

+meekedee it's an okay book by the late author, his theory is that the Renaissance bop movement that began in the 80s by Wynton and all the other young lions, which he terms the neo-con movement, has hurt jazz because it has caused jazz to continue progressing. interesting reading but I don't agree with all his premises.

+Albert Balderas That's a bizarre notion. Why on earth would you want to stop the progression of jazz? It's impossible...

Been listening to this tune for going on 4 decades. Even now the head and the way it's voiced still sounds hip and contemporary. Never imagined there was video of it.

Caught this group at Baker's Keyboard in Detroit that year when I first heard young Wynton play. As a trumpeter myself, Wynton's technical skill blew me away. Art lit a match and they were on fire. Hard to imagine that was 40 years ago. We're old now.

Outstanding composition!! Wynton Marsalis is the last of the truly fine trumpet players to forge a credible artistic path in jazz. No more up an coming jazz artists anymore, and that's a true shame. That garbage hip-hop ruined music forever, no one wants to hear anything cerebral anymore. The creative mind is a thing of the passed. Thank god for dizzy and bird!!!

Wow you said a mouth full brother. But at least we can hear the greats on tape. I love jazz more than most. Seen Freddy Hubbub live twice. Seen Blue Mitchell live in Oakland. Jazz will always live in recorded music. I listen to my grandfather music that was recorded and I never meant him he died young. Trumpet player Bunny Berigan. I am on a lee Morgan kick right now. Hip hop and also rock took away Jazz from the public unfortunately.

We play quote: ‘Gut Bucket Shit’, as Art told me a few times at “Nick’s Jazz Joint”, in Laren , Holland. Saw them live in 79/80 and in very early 1981. This fantastic piece, written by the -one n’ only- Bobby Watson is a ripper of the highest order, and was with BW the best group Art had, imo. So Dig& Enjoy & Cheers!

To people hating Wynton... dudes, it's clear that he's been playing for the whole night and his mouth must have been dead. The whole band is playing quite disastrously if you compare it to the cd version. It's live and I think to complain about stuff like that is just not necessary when you hear Branfords solo.

Y'all gonna hate me for saying this.. but this is the very best assembly of the Jazz Messengers.. #NoCap 🧢 A young Wynton is phenomenal player.. and Bradford was right on his back.. the best part however is the dynamics.. Kats need to learn to play soft as well as loud.. Art stressed this in all his recorded material. #RIPKing

You've got to be kidding............ besides your opinion just being an opinion, it is a fact that Art Blakey was always able to engage the best young and promisiong ones for his University of Jazz. And Wynton definitely was one of the best, if not the best, of all the talent that Buhaina signed up for his band.
