With Squidward, the general shtick to most good Squidward-centric episodes (most, not all-in fact Band Geeks is an exception) is this: Secretly, even to himself, he actually likes doing the things Spongebob does. In fact, he might even secretly like Spongebob. However, he has such an inflated sense of self-importance that he sees Spongebob-and the stuff Spongebob likes-as being beneath him. He refuses to eat Krabby Patties, for example, because he has delusions of sophistication. He's sophisticated and mature, no way he'd be caught dead eating fast food! Same thing with blowing bubbles, snowball fights, and playing in a cardboard box. This is an irrational, self-defeating mindset. But it's one that's very common, and therefor creates a relatable character.

In seasons 1-3 Squidward felt like a character created by the fear of growing up, how when you get older you have to give up what you truly enjoy for what adults see as appropriate for your age. With this in mind, while Squidward does have hobbies people associate with adulthood, such as his garden and interior decorating, he looks down on Spongebob's hobbies because he sees Spongebob as a guy who needs to grow up. It's not until he experiences the hobbies however that he realizes that they are fun. Like you said, the krabby patty is a great example, another being the box or the piece of paper. He knows it can be fun, and he ends up trying to, with one succeeding, and with another not. With the box, when he kicks it and he hears stuff breaking, his mind begins to create a world where what he hears is real, and continues on when he imagines robot pirate island. Looking back, he reminds me of middle school, where he'd be the kid who'd end up trying to be cool like the other kids so he could fit in. Even after the 'cool kids' have told him no though, he's tricked himself into believing that being like them is what he wants, when instead being accepted is his goal. Then we have the middle schooler who doesn't try to be like the cool kids, and just wants to be himself. While this cool copycat calls him out, now believing that this other kid is just immature, he realizes at times that he's just like this kid, but is in fear of being shamed for acting the way he used to. Almost like a "if I look back now, can I keep going forward?" situation, where forward is being the ideal person people want him to be, and back being the prson he wants to be.

I kind of see the dynamics between Spongebob, Squidward and even Patrick as being like brothers. Squidward would be the oldest: wanting to be more "grown-up", seeing his younger siblings as immature and embarrassing (cramping his style), and yet also feeling rather protective of them at times and even occasionally enjoying being included in their misadventures. Spongebob and Patrick, as the younger brothers, do what other younger brothers do: pester and annoy Squidward in their attempts to get him to play along with them. They also, in some ways, look up to and even try to emulate him. There's an underlying element of friendship and love layered on top with the daily quirks and annoyances that come from such a close relationship.

In two episodes I can think of off the top of my head, Squidward outright admitted he liked Spongebob as a friend. The April Fools episode, and the Graveyard Shift episode. He's even stood up for Spongebob which shows he does care. In Pizza Delivery, near the end when the customer yells at Spongebob then slams the door which causes him to cry, Squidward slammed the pizza right into the a*sholes face.

I believe that the reason that is episode is so beloved is that for the first time in the series at that point, he actually "won". Basically, Squidium was the Squidward to Squidward's Spongebob.

About halfway through each semester, before a big competition, I would bring this episode for us all to watch on DVD during lunch break. I always related to Squidward, even as a child. It was entertaining to see him suffer occasionally, but it was hard not to see reality's reorientation to screw him over as unsettling. I am pretty optimistic usually, but not as of recent because people didn't want me to be happy and outgoing... to go with an analogy that actually isn't related to spongebob but pokemon: before i moved to a new job with housing included, i was ash's dragonite. after i was fired for reasons i can only assume are BS to cover up their annoyance... i was iris' dragonite... i am better now but my attitude is right in between the 2: trying to have some optimism and positivity while having a more cynical look on life and seeing the evil and hypocrisy in many people... the 6 months i had with that job was the biggest scam i ever had... as well as a valuable life lesson in trust and who you should believe in...

Something that stands out to me about Band Geeks are some of the implications that have hold about Squidward's character that stand even until later seasons. It's stated in this episode that Squidward's dream is to have a band that plays at the Bubble Bowl. When he sees all these people on the first day of band practice, he's happy even as he sees Spongebob and Patrick who usually annoy the hell out of him, even when they reveal they've never played an instrument before, instead of getting desperate, he sees it as a chance to teach all of them. In season 6, episode 17, Professor Squidward, the one where he pretends to be Squilliam and that gets him a teaching spot in a music college, he does it only so he can have a chance to teach people music. I know most people think Squidward's dream is being a clarinet player as a full time job, but I don't think it is. I think Squidward's actual dream is teaching music. And the climax on the episode plays to that because, not only Squidward isn't touching a single instrument while the band plays, but also... canonly, the characters' only knowledge in music came from the 4 days Squidward teached them. Squidward might not be a good clarinet player. But he is one hell of a music teacher.

Me and my brother created a term for this kind of episode, a 'Duck Soup' episode. Much like the Marx Brothers film, it escews its standard narrative structure and tells a much simpler story in order to tell as many different jokes and set-pieces as possible using characters that we've already learned to understand and love. I think we all wanted to see Squidward win, kinda like how when kids were given a chance to vote as to whether the Trix Rabbit gets the Trix, the kids all voted "yes." There was a Nickelodeon comic I saw where Squidward comes along with SpongeBob to visit Grandma Squarepants, and she not only shares all of Squidward's interests but compliments him on his talents. Squidward leaves the visit happy.

For the entire series up until this point, Squidward has never secured a real victory. He ALWAYS ended up getting the short end of the stick, and getting bad karma for being rude or cynical. He was always the one who ended up becoming victim to slapstick and abuse... But in this episode, Squidward finally *wins.*

Pretty much the reason why its good, is because it was pretty grounded. The character weren't trying to ruin Squidward's day, but it was funny without malice. Squidward had an honest problem he wanted help with, and the characters though idiots tried to follow his instructions. When they failed, he gave up on them. Then they (spongebob when he was the voice of reason in earlier seasons) recognized they failed him, found some way to pull together and try again properly even though they don't really care about Squidward, Spongebob gave them some sort of reason to do it anyway. They didn't all just get away with it like they do in Squidwad torture episodes. Then they pull it off, and Squidward actually gets what he wanted, achieved a dream of his and it ended with him happy. No joke to take it away from him. Nothing to ruin it at the last minute. Squidward just got what he wanted after trying hard to be patient and reasonable with everyone. That sense of heart is what Spongebob lacks these days, and it reminds me of the best episodes of the older Simpsons. As for the directing, the episode was still in the better years of the series where it wasn't just always over-the-top faces, and slapstick every few seconds or grossout. It was just well-paced, a lot of interaction humor, and the moderate jokes landed with set up and breathers after them, with more visual gags when the dialogue ended. That is how you pace good episodes of Spongebob. The characters were also idiots but it wasn't holding back the plot. They just realistically didn't know what they were doing, and got frustrated. Patrick wasn't just randomly destroying everything. It was grounded and had a good ending that felt earned for the character focus. Squidward.

Its my favorite episode. I like the ones where Squidward feels happy, at least for a few seconds before he squidwards everything up!

When my country first aired Spongebob, they inexplicably removed many songs from the episodes. Ep 1's living in the sunlight was cut, the ripped pants song was cut, the flying sponge song was cut. You probably guessed where I'm going with this, Band Geeks ended the moment the song started, when the trumpets started playing and Squidward opened his eyes in surprise. I was always really confused by that ending, and had to wait until 2008 to see the ending, the year when I first started searching on youtube and found the famous Final Spongedown "AMV". I always liked the various Band Geeks love posts, analysis and videos like this I saw during the years, and I'm sad I didn't get to experience this as a kid during my first time watching the episode

Doctor Forrest is at the door with a paramedic] Doctor Forrest: Yeah, uhh, we're with the pet hospital down the street and I understand that you have a dying animal on the premises. [Squidward slams the door shut. The phone starts to ring.] Squidward: Hello. You've reached the house of unrecognized talent. Please start after the [He plays a clarinet note.] Squilliam: Sounds like you've got a dying animal to attend to, eh, ol' chum? [Squidward gasps.] Squidward: Squilliam Fancyson from band class?! Squilliam: I hear you're playing the cash register now. Squidward: Sometimes. Uh, how's the unibrow? Squilliam: [Waving his unibrow] It's big and valuable. I'm the leader of a big fancy band now, and we're supposed to play the Bubble Bowl next week. Squidward: The ba-ba-ba... The ba-ba-ba... The ba-ba-ba?!?! Squilliam: That's right. I'm living your dreams, Squidward. The problem is, I'm busy next week and can't make it. So, I was hoping you and your band could cover for us. Squidward: Ohh, uhh, I... I, uhh... Squilliam: I knew it! You don't even have a band! Well, I'll just let you get back to the service industry now. Squidward: Hold it! It just so happens that I don't sell fast food, I do have a band, and we're gonna play that Bubble Bowl! How do you like that, Fancy Boy?! Squilliam: Good luck next Tuesday. I hope the audience brings lots of... ibuprofen! [Squilliam and Squidward hang up the phones.] Squidward: I gotta drum up a marching band fast! Drum... haha... band humor. [In the following lines, Sandy, Plankton, Mrs. Puff, Mr. Krabs, and Larry are reading from a poster. Each are in different locations.] Sandy: Looking to add fulfillment to your dull, dull life? Plankton: Then become part of the greatest musical sensation to ever hit Bikini Bottom. Mrs. Puff: And be forever adored by thousands of people you don't know. Mr. Krabs: Not to mention free refreshments. Larry: Practice begins tonight. 8:30 sharp. [Squidward looks at his watch while driving a shell cart] Squidward: Stupid music rental clerk made me late. That trilobite didn't know an oboe from an elbow. Elbow, heh, more band humor. [The scene cuts to inside the room, where everyone is there.] All: Blah, blah, blah, blah... Squidward: People, people, settle down! Okay, now. How many of you have played musical instruments before? Plankton: Do instruments of torture count? Squidward: No. Patrick: Is mayonnaise an instrument? Squidward: No, Patrick, mayonnaise is not an instrument. [Patrick raises his hand again] Horseradish is not an instrument, either. [Patrick lowers his hand] That's fine. No one has any experience. Fortunately, I have enough talent for all of you. [Squidward laughs. Everyone stays silent.] Mr. Krabs: When do we get the free food? Squidward: Okay, try to repeat after me. [Squidward plays six notes] Brass section, go. [brass section repeats badly] Good. Now the wind. [wind section repeats badly] And the drums. [drummers misunderstand what Squidward means, so they blow on their sticks which blow out and stick Squidward to the wall] Too bad that didn't kill me. [Next scene] Let's just try stepping in the rhythm. Now I want everyone to stand in straight rows of five. SpongeBob: Is this the part where we start kicking? Squidward: No, SpongeBob, that's a chorus line. Patrick: Kicking? I wanna do some kicking! [Patrick kicks Sandy in the leg] Sandy: Ow! Why, you...! Why I oughta...! [she jumps on Patrick and starts fighting him until they roll outside and the doors slam shut] Patrick: Aaaaaah-ho-ho-ho-ho-aaah! [Everyone pauses and stare at the door, then Patrick sticks his head back in]

Whoever is the owner of the white sedan, you left your lights on. [Patrick walks in and it is revealed that Sandy has stuck his body in a trombone. Trombone notes are heard as he walks towards his seat. As he sits down, he makes a sound on his trombone. Makes a loud trombone noise as he opens his mouth. Stares at himself.] Narrator: Day two. [The scene shows the band walking down a street playing Semper Fidelis, badly.] Squidward: Okay, that's perfect, everybody. Bubble Bowl, here we come. Flag twirlers, really spin those things. Okay, turn. Flag twirlers, let's go. I wanna see some spinning. Flag twirlers, let's move! C'mon, move! [The flag twirlers spin so hard that they take off into the sky and crash into a blimp, which causes an explosion. A trumpet player plays taps while everyone mourns, except Squidward, who just lies down on the ground.] Narrator: Day three. Squidward: How's that harmonica solo coming, Plankton? Plankton: It's tremendous, you wanna see? [Plankton plays the harmonica by running to and from the holes quickly, but soon runs out of breath; on his way to the last hole he blows an unsuccessful last raspberry into the harmonica and faints.] Narrator: Day four. Squidward: Well, this is our last night together before the show. And I know that you haven't improved since we began... [Patrick chews on a trumpet] ...but I have a theory. People talk loud when they wanna act smart, right? Plankton: [loudly] Correct! Squidward: So, if we play loud, people might think we're good. Everybody ready? And a one, and a two, and a one, two, three, four! [screen cuts to the outside of the music school and a blast of noise ensues, breaking the windows. Cuts back inside the music school, where Squidward's face is deformed beyond recognition, his shirt's been ripped, and his baton breaks] Okay, new theory. Maybe we should play so quietly, no one can hear us. Harold: Well, maybe we wouldn't sound so bad if some people didn't try to play with big, meaty claws! Mr. Krabs: What did you say, punk?! Harold: [shouts loudy] Big... meaty... claws! Mr. Krabs: Well, these claws ain't for just attractin' mates! Harold: Bring it on, old man! Bring it on! SpongeBob: [tries intervening] No, people. Let's be smart and bring it off. Nancy: Oh, so now the talking cheese is gonna preach to us. Squidward: Wait, wait. I know tensions are high... [everyone gets into a fight. Pilar and Larry are yelling at each other. Medley slams a drum on Pilar.] There's a deposit on that equipment, people! [everyone uses their instruments as weapons. Mr. Krabs and Harold charge at each other with large woodwinds, but try to screech to a halt, and Mrs. Puff slams them both with her cymbals] Settle down, please! [Sandy and Frank are fighting. Sandy breaks the xylophone keys from Frank and Frank runs away. Patrick kicks Sandy, who growls at him before producing a trumpet with an evil grin. Patrick realizes what's coming and runs away screaming as Sandy chases him with the trumpet. The scene cuts to the clock which shows it being 10 o'clock and everyone stops fighting.] Fred: Hey, class is over. [The band members walk to the door where Squidward slams it open.] Squidward: Well, you did it. You took my one chance in happiness... and crushed it! Crushed it into little, tiny, bite-size pieces. I really had expected better of you people. I guess I'm a loser for that, too. Don't bother showing up tomorrow. I'll just tell them you all died in a marching accident. So, thanks. [sobbing] Thanks for nothing! [Squidward leaves.] Patrick: You're welcome. SpongeBob: What kind of monsters are we? That poor creature came to us in his hour of need, and we failed him. Squidward's always been there for us when it was convenient for him. Evelyn, when your little Jimmy was trapped in a fire, who rescued him? Evelyn: A fireman. SpongeBob: And Larry, when your heart gave out from all those tanning pills, who revived you? Larry: Some guy in an ambulance. SpongeBob: Right. So, if we can all just pretend that Squidward was a fireman, or some guy in an ambulance, then I'm sure that we can all pull together and discover what it truly means to be in a marching band. Harold: Yeah, for the fireman! All: Hooray! SpongeBob: Now let's make Squidward proud. A 1, a 2, a skiddly diddly doo. [The scene cuts to the Bubble Bowl] Squidward: I knew this was gonna happen. They're just gonna have to find another band to play. I just hope that... [zooms out to reveal Squilliam is there] ...Squilliam doesn't find out! Squilliam! [screams] What are you doing here?! Squilliam: [laughs] I just wanna watch you blow it. So, where's your band? Squidward: Uh, they couldn't come. They... died. Squilliam: Then who's that? [points to SpongeBob and the rest of the band] Squidward: [screams and his eyes pop out] That would be my band! SpongeBob: We're ready to perform, Squidward. Squilliam: Well, Squiddy, this is exactly how I pictured your band would look. [SpongeBob dances] Squidward: That's his... eager face. [Squilliam laughs while they all go into the Bubble Bowl.] Squidward: [everybody marches to the Bubble Bowl and starts performing.] I guess this will be the last time I can show my face in this town. SpongeBob: That's the spirit, Squidward! [The bowl raises above a football field.] Football Announcer: Okay, football fans. Put your hands together for the Bikini Bottom Super Band! [A crowd of live-action people cheering is shown.] Patrick: These are some ugly looking fish. SpongeBob: Maybe we're in one of those toxic waste dumps. Mr. Krabs: I think I'm gonna be sick. Squidward: [Nervously] Alright, everybody. [Glances at Squilliam, who grins and bounces his unibrow] Let's get this over with. 1, 2, 3, 4... [The band starts to play a wonderful intro. Squidward opens his eyes, shocked. SpongeBob begins singing.] SpongeBob: [voice of David Glen Eisley] ♪The winner takes all, it's the thrill of one more kill. The last one to fall will never sacrifice their will. Don't ever look back on the world closin' in. Be on the attack with your wings on the wind. Oh, the games will begin.♪ [Squilliam stares in shock, Squidward gives him a smug grin and throws his baton over his shoulder and uses his arms for conducting.] ♪And it's sweet, sweet, sweet victory, yeah. And it's ours for the taking, it's ours for the fight,♪ [Squilliam faints and gets carried away by stretchers. Squidward waves a smug goodbye to him and runs to the middle of the stage.] ♪And it's sweet, sweet, sweet victory, yeah. And the one who's last to fall. We will have sweet, sweet victory...♪ [Squidward jumps up and the scene freezes. It then fades to black, ending the episode.]
