I met Craig at LA X walking with The Band down a hallway. I sped up my walk to catch up to these guys with long hair. I got next to Craig 1st, still walking. I asked are you guys in a band, after all it is LA X. Craig very kindly said to me yes, "DIO, Ronnie is right there". I almost fell over! Craig tells me very kindly, let Ronnie and his wife get food from the food court and you can approach him. I totally chilled back and watched Ronnie get like pizza or something. Then I made my move twords him. I said Ronnie you were my very 1st concert 1985 Spokane Washington, you had the giant dragon. He looked up at me and I'm only 5-8 and said, I AM THE DRAGON SLAYER! I ALMOST DIED! I was able to get autographs from the whole band. Craig is Standup just like Ronnie. Zero ego issues. True beautiful people. Thank you, Craig!

I got lucky and got to go backstage and meet everybody but geezer because he was like sick or something on the bus. But Vinny Tony and of course Ronnie we're so nice and cool to us! Oh yeah I got lucky to go backstage because one of the road crew saw my army jacket and gave me his backstage pass, said thank you for your service put around my neck! I remember writing an email to Craig around the release of Magica and saying how thrilled I was that he returned to the band and no disrespect to Vivian he's a great guitarist but he's happier where he is now and he did a great job on the first two albums. Craig has always been one of two guitarists that has remained in my opinion anyway my favorite guitarist so when he replied back I printed out the email and put it in a scrapbook but when our city went through a flood in 2013 it got damaged along with a bunch of other Dip and other bands that I collected over the years but he has remained in my eyes the best guitarist Too ever had.

I was living in Las Vegas NV at the time and thought i s was going to be Vivian playing with them and it was Goldy. The concert kicked some ass but they play weird that night where they were cutting from one song into the next and then back into the song they start with. Still a great concert in my teen years! I loved Dream Evil that I later found out since back then news moved so slowly in Las Vegas in those times. It could take upto 6 months to find things out. When I was 12 , I used to attended a Christian church. One night Goldy and Jeff fenholt from White. Snake where special guests. I was too young to know that goldy played with Dio but I did listen to Dio, sabbath , ozzy ect. Gold got on stage and Ripped on guitar. I was amazed. I played guitar at the time and I was even more inspired. Thanks Goldy. Absolutely Gold on Get-tar...

Craig sounds like an awesome dude! I gotta say that I love the guitars on Dream Evil. In fact I always felt that album is very much underrated on the whole. Yes it has that late 80's feel, but I think it stomps all over Black Sabbath's Eternal Idol from the same year. Now Vinny took drum inspiration straight out of We Will Rock on Sunset Superman, but man I love the solo in the middle of that song. I also really like the cover that Jorn's band did years later, but Dream Evil is a damn good record and Craig plays well on this one. Faces in the Window is a burner IMO. I think Dio did better with faster vocal stuff, though he also sounded good when he sang slower, just an opinion. Thanks for sharing!

It's funny, but I heard Craig on San Diego radio station KGB's original Metal Shop show when he was with Rough Cutt. Craig was clearly not only a big fan of Ronnie, but he really liked and admired Ronnie as a person. It was that point at which I knew that if Vivian ever ended up out of DIO that Craig would get that gig. It was obvious to anyone paying attention that Craig and Ronnie would work great together, and liked each other as people. It was perfect. And, by the way, Craig was (and still is) a great guitar player. So when my friends and I first heard that Viv was out of DIO I told them - Craig's going to be the new DIO guitar player. I told them why I thought that, and, sure enough, Craig was in - where he belonged. Viv was great for DIO, and without him the band might not have become as successful as they were, but Craig brought a lot to the table, too. Dream Evil is a great album, and the Dream Evil tour (with the Dream Factory stage set) was my favorite DIO tour. Craig was fantastic! In a lot of ways he's the spiritual successor to Ronnie. I just wish there were a full pro-shot show from the Dream Evil tour available. There are a few songs from Texas on KZbin, but not the full show. I really miss Ronnie, but when I hear Craig I hear a bit of Ronnie in there.

@DTM 1864 Thanks my friend!! Very cool thing to say! I gotta admit....one of the proudest and saddest moments in Dio history has to do with that very thing a bit! At one point in time....Ronnie's doctor gave Ronnie a clean bill of health and told him and Wendy that he could do whatever he wanted to do! We all thought he'd go back with the Mob Rules Sabbath line up of Heaven and Hell....he was back in the 20,000 seat arenas again and they were making money hand over fist....and we thought he'd want to sock away as much as he could for his retirement.....so when Wendy asked him...."What do you want to do?" Ronnie said...."I want to write with Craig" Ouch!! And WOW!! We did write a song for Magica II....and he wrote more of the story.....so, I'm assuming that this song will surface some day! Thanks my friend! Good to hear from you again!!

@@TCraigGoldy If you don't mind me indulging for a few minutes; there were a few things that would hypnotize me when I was a young. One was anything Jimi Hendrix, the other was the Hear N' Aid VHS tape that I would watch in my college dorm. As I got older and analyzed people's playing more, I understood why you were chosen to open up the guitar solo section of the song. The genius of Ronnie, Vivian, Appice and Bain's work is right out there in front for everyone to hear, but choosing the guitar parts to go on record must have been a gargantuan task considering who was in that studio. Every one of those amazing guitar players would have came out like gang busters if given the opportunity to start it off. But among the amazing, Craig Goldie, did not do that. What you did was tap the beast on the shoulder, like waking up the dragon and watching him crawl around before he goes buck wild, (Wo Wah A Woo, Wo wah wo wah wah)... Damn, I call that genius. Buck Darma also nicely puts the button at the end of the solo section. That is a lesson music dynamics in one song. I try and use that whenever I play or conceive a solo part.

You and Ronnie are the only ones so far that picked up on that! In fact that's why Ronnie flew me in from a couple days off from the Giuffria tour! And when I played the opening solo bit....once I stopped and wanted to try again....aa he's grabbing my arm he's says "See, that's why I had you go first....I knew you would start out with a theme and not start noodling around"! That was a really cool moment of so many that I'll never forget!! Thank you for noticing! Do you play guitar or are in a band? Do you have any links you could share so I can get a good idea of where you are at this phase of your life? Maybe I can help! It would be for free! But anyhow...thanks for the kind words!! @@TCraigGoldy I could only imagine what a Magica 2 would have been like. Magica, Master of the Moon and the Dream Evil albums are permanently on whatever CD music player, or phone music app I'm using. As for me, I haven't played out in about 20 years. I was part of a large 15 piece Jazz ensemble . Ironically I'm not a jazz minded guitar player. Pop and Rock are my thing, but I was available, adaptable and my work supervisor commandeered my services knowing it would be a good education for me. Still till this day Jazz is a mystery to me. There are also a few failed attempts at starting bands with friends and family over the years; not really the way to go. What's also ironic is that I love the sound of my guitar playing yet I haven't recorded much of my playing. I dislike the sound of my voice which is common; most people don't like the sound of their voice.... but I love hearing my guitar playing from a recording, yet I've done so little of it. I'm currently finishing up a Christian Baptismal song that I always ask other people to sing for me, and a few instrumentals. I also quit my career job about a year ago (semi retired) and took on a regular job just so I can make myself happy. The pandemic changed the mindsets of a lot of people. I promised myself, I would spend my time becoming a better guitar player, work on some new guitar build projects and learn to play drums, which is also a mystery to me. Thanks for responding back. You have no idea how that makes my year. I brag to my friends about it all the time.

Vivian was a major part of those 1st 3 Dio records...and Vivian was a force to be reckoned with..Viv had ALLLLLL the style and licks and became a literal guitar hero, got better on each album...Craig did a good job indeed but I didn't think he was the Right guitarist to fill Vivs shoes .,. @@i5150v1 Thank you my friend! The thing about the intro to "Overlove" is that I was experimenting with accents....making the fast part like a figure 8 with the accents on the curves and like the fast sound of when people gargle with mouthwash.....it's rather a fast sound that comes from their throats as they gargle. I was trying to incorporate that, accents and the figure 8 into the intro. Otherwise it would just be fast notes with a clean guitar sound. That's the best way I can describe it! I'm getting ready to do private lessons and sessions on Skype cause people have been asking about that.....sometimes just to show them how certain things were done cause they were actually quite good on their own and did not need lessons.....just a private session!
