I also have always seen it as an emphasis on the alien nature they see the other in. But especially the demonization I've always loved, *because* of that reversal in this episode, with the blue eyes being the evil invaders, and the red eyes being the victims. People can't get past the Nazi German influence, and don't see all of the references to dozens of other regimes and cultures.

They said what started the war way back. An ishvalan child was accidentally killed by an officer. That lead to an uprising, and eventually a war. The war raged for seven years and ravaged the entire Eastern sector and much of the South. After that, the extermination order went out. It didn't just start like that. There were 7 years of Civil War prior.

I love how Scar is this threat in the beginning but the more you learn about him the more interesting he is. His life was torn apart and he is looking for revenge. And you can understand that thirst. His realization of becoming the monster he hated is really powerful. Episode 22 is probably the best episode in the first half of the series. At least imo.

I love equating Scar and his brother to Al and Ed. Al is compared to Scar. The younger brother, the better physical fighter. They both live in a body that isn't theirs, or isn't entirely theirs, that causes them suffering and is given to them by their big brother. Scar, with his brother's arm reminding him of his family's death, and Al in a metal armour, unable to sleep, eat or feel. Ed is like Scar's brother. The older brother, a genius alchemist. Gave up his arm to save his younger brother. Puts himself in harm's way just to protect those he loves and willing to sacrifice himself for his brother.

And Finally I get to FMA, it's a big episode too, the outro never seemed so fitting Greed was jumped by Bradley, he never gave him a chance to harden his shield properly either Jasmine would learn to fight if she had 49 half-siblings vying for the throne in warring clans... The music used in Bradley and Ling's fight is called 'To be King' Scar's backstory is so well done as well, his first proper killing was a crime of passion and poor circumstance, you can understand his rage, but you can't abide it. Pretty Brutal? Ishval was a massacre, FMAB pulls no punches with showing its audience the vicious brutality of war. Expect to learn more later and not the same as 03 Yeah Winry does a lot of crying, poor girl goes through the ringer, despite Ed's efforts. Kimblee is still in prison, in a dark room mulling over explosions and whatnot I don't think you can Ninja Poof away from Fuhrer King Ruler Emperor President Prime Minister Tsar Khan Lord Captain Admiral Kaiser Bradley

Look at the scene with scar and Winry, and the scene with Scar and Kimblee. They have, in a very literal sense, switched places. Scar is standing the same way Kimblee was, as Edward used his body to shield a loved one. He stopped because he realized he had, in that moment, become the very thing he hated.
@TheTenguwarrior
@TheTenguwarrior 6 жыл бұрын
Yes this was a very important realisation for Scar, because while he doesn't apologize he know perfectly well that he has done and still does something Evil. But he felt justified in doing so. But the confrontation with Winry and Ed in reversed Roles shows him that he is perpetuating an endless circle of violence and revenge. And it needs real good character to stop ones own lust for revenge. As Winry has done in this episode, while Scar himself gave her the moral "okay" for killing him.

Speaking of that scene, nobody ever talks about the fact that Ed was STILL concerned about Winry pulling the trigger as he was shielding her. He's even using his left hand to point the gun away from Scar! Even before he comforted her and told her that she was meant to save lives, he knew this fact LONG before those words came out of his mouth. Ed didn't want Winry to fire that gun because he knew that it would ruin her. WHY, in God's name, does NOBODY talk about how beautiful that is?!

Great reaction to a great episode. :) Just as a small correction, though, Mustang did explain back in Episode 5 what led to the Civil War with Ishval. It was because an Amestrian military officer had shot and killed an Ishvalan child. That's the incident Scar was referring to.

I got into Fullmetal Alchemist via the original anime from 2003, but this episode officially made Brotherhood superior in my eyes! Scar's backstory was incredible, but the fact that it's also tied to the fate of Winry's parents is just breathtaking! In the 2003 anime, the death of Winry's parents was handled differently, but it was done in a way that was not nearly as dramatic, IMO, nor was it very fair to Winry's character. I was gonna go on a rant about how much the 2003 series bugged me with the way it handled the subplot of Winry's parents, but I decided to pass. Anyway, I'll just say that, even when I was a huge fan of FMA 2003, that part really bugged me.

Yep. During the war in Ishval, Roy Mustang was ordered by Basque Grand to execute the Rockbells via gunfire; the reason was because it was considered treason to provide medical treatment to the enemy. After doing this, he almost put a bullet in his own head, until Dr. Marcoh talked him out of it. After the war, Mustang was in a deep suicidal depression. However, thanks to Maes Hughes, Mustang overcame his depression and aspired to rise up through the ranks and become Fuhrer, so he could change the system for the better, as well as prevent anymore senseless deaths. After a lot of buildup, Winry learned the truth from a couple of Ishvallan children, and she learned about Hughes inspiring Mustang to change the system. Unfortunately, there was no dramatic confrontation, other than Winry shooting a few hateful glares to Mustang and the latter averting his eyes out of guilt. What bothers me the most, is that he never directly apologizes to Winry, despite giving a heartfelt speech about how he and his comrades did terrible things during the Ishval war and he wants to do everything he can to make amends. Winry basically has to accept that he's sincere, realizing that her parents' deaths weren't in vain because it ultimately set him on the right path. It's very similar to How Batman v Superman Should Have Ended, because even though Mustang killed Winry's parents, he feels really bad about it now so that makes it okay.

Darryl Jack similarities? It's a straight up fascist dictatorship. The Ishvalens only have asthetic similarities but there is allot more happening in Ishvalens than an occupation of their holy Land. There aren't invading fascist regimes occupying the Middle East and committing genocide, there are fascist middle Eastern countries committing genocide however.

I said that when? Full Metal Alchemist is set in a time period resembling the early 20th century indicating it is commentating on that period and the primary theme of the Military Characters is to find a way to reconcile the past and build a better society and accept other cultures. Sounds a bit like what Germany, Japan and Italy had to do after WW2.

The copyright thing also depends on the company. Some copyright holders are on the prowl more than others. For instance, both you guys and Blindwave seem to have trouble with Attack on Titan videos, but I know of multiple reaction series to FMAB that are full episode length with no cuts. I imagine that any company will take down videos they come across, but some either don't put in as much effort to find them as others, or are willfully blind to a degree.

It's honestly hard to hate *any* of the characters in this show. 9 times out of 10, they have a major redeeming quality (past tragic enough for you to understand why they're like that.. like Scar, or they argue their point so well that you start to agree with them.. future character I will not name). The show is so well written that you even start to feel bad for the villains to a point.. like the very last scene of a certain episode featuring a fight with a certain big bad.

I can explain the civil war based on the stuff you've been shown without any spoilers to upcoming info. Basically, Amestris annexed Ishval, conquered them and now they're a part of Amestris as a province. During the occupation, unrest got out of control when an Amestrian soldier accidentally shot and killed a little Ishvalan girl. After a while of Amestrian soldiers fighting Ishvalan militias, the order came down to exterminate the entire province and kill all Ishvalans. On a personal note, I sympathize with Scar and don't really see a reason to support Amestris. They've done nothing good for anyone. You can use the doctor argument but the doctors wouldn't have to be there if Amestris didn't try to commit genocide in the first place. He's only targeting State Alchemists, not civilians or even soldiers.

In their religion alchemy is forbidden as they believe only God should have the power to create and change, this is was why Scar was against his brother learning it and if I'm not mistaken in the Manga it was explicitly stated his brother was viewed as an outcast amongst his people for learning alchemy, he quite literally went against his peoples culture and beliefs for learning it and thats another reason why Scar is so hateful. Because of alchemy he is now a human weapon and it was against his will, he sees himself as damned in his God's eyes being forced to used alchemy. This is why he's so quick to kill with an unflinching will as he's interpreted all that's happened to him as God granting him the power avenge the loss of his country and people in exchange for his eternal soul, never to be with his brother and other loved ones in the after life

"How do you choose if you want to do peacekeeping missions or do combat missions?" You really don't. It depends on what your unit rotation is and what they're doing. However, you can choose an non-combat related MOS (job), but that doesn't necessarily exclude you from deploying to Afghanistan on a combat mission (you most likely just won't leave the wire, that's all.) It all depends on a whole lot of different factors, honestly. Also, sometimes it is both combat and peacekeeping at the same time (e.g. Somalia.) [Again, this is for real live and not a fictional authoritarian government in an anime lol.]

The War of extermination on Ishval only started after the Ishvalan Civil War has lasted for too many years and extended far beyond the reach of Ishval up to the point where the Ishvalan incursions reached as far as East City, that was when the Amestrian High Command issued the executive order to completely and effectively exterminate the Ishvalan population and make use of its most lethal weapon: the state alchemists.
