Father and Hohenheim are both philosopher's stones in humanoid forms, although Father's apparently been modifying his own body over the years. Father split the sum total of all the souls in Xerxes between the two of them when he made his new body. That being said, Father also split off fractions of his own stone to make his homunculi children (that's where their stones come from), so he probably has fewer overall souls in his form than Hohenheim does at this point. It's stated during Hohenheim's flashback that the Dwarf in the Flask was a life form made via alchemy by Hohenheim's (Slave 23's) master, who was a skilled alchemist at the time. The Dwarf considers Hohenheim his "brother" because the master alchemist used Hohenheim's blood as a base to make the life form. Why exactly the Dwarf knows so much isn't explained. Also, the both of them are only able to transmute without moving because of their stones. Alphonse briefly pulled the same trick a few times while using a stone against Pride.

Someone else probably pointed it out first already, but the Dwarf in the Flask was made by Hohenheim's former master using Hohenheim's blood. Pretty much the original concept of a Homunculus. As for a Philosopher's Stone, both Hohenheim and Father are walking, talking Philosopher's Stones with the souls of the people of Xerxes evenly divided between them. Father also included a new body for himself because he hated being trapped in the flask.

No spoilers - Father, the dwarf in the flask, was born from an alchemical experiment with Hohenheim's blood. He technically comes from within the gate of truth. That's why he had so much knowledge of the world and Alchemy when he was in the flask. He and Hohenheim are living philosopher stones each containing over half a million souls. The Xerxes population was over 1 million citizens.

Making people believe that Bradley is a good guy and they are on his side is a risky choice but probably the best one. People are generally well-treated and have a decent standard of living (we are actually far from a dictature), Bradley is popular, a coup against him would have been badly perceived and Mustang would have no support. If they wanted direct confrontation they had to set Father's plans out, which could have led in various tough situations : people could deny it, or loose all faith in leaders and make the country deeply unstable ; others countries could take advantage of the situation and try to invade Amestris, etc. I'm glad that the author cared about this aspect of the story, while most shonen do little more than the battle between the hero and the bad guy which automatically resolve everything. It makes the whole story feel more realistic.

The country has always been militaristic, so it's not unreasonable to think maybe one day the military will turn on itself. The dwarf in the flask was made using Hoenheim's blood. My Theory: I think since it used blood instead of a philosopher stone, the homunculus was weaker or more unstable and had to stay in the flask. The stone allows him to create and maintain a larger container. Since his "children" were made purely from philosopher stones, they never required a container to begin with, with the exception of Pride who Father made first and in his image (by making him bound to a container as well).

Everyone always thinks it's Lan Fan, they never consider that it's Fu, a guy who also has a bone to pick Bradley is very Tom Selleck, would be a good live action choice, I thought that at the beginning Still worth bearing in mind that some battles in the intro do not happen, Ed never fought Gluttony and Envy on the streets of Central, Al never fought Envy and Pride in a DBZ mountain setting and Kimblee never fought the Briggs forces alongside Sloth The souls are still in Father, but he can hold them back, the Dwarf in the Flask's stone is bonded to its very 'soul' like it is with Hohenheim's The Dwarf is a fragment of the Portal of Truth, those hands that come out of the big door, the Homunculus is a part of that, which explains its lust and capacity for knowledge. the tubes were plugged into his body, he spread his philosopher's stone out, which means that the whole area his stone has been spread is a part of his body, it's his other container

The souls of Xerxes were split between Father and Hoenheim, in number not each sould in half. Over a million people were part of the sacrifice in Xerxes. Hoenheim talked to all the souls in him and talked to them about their lives. Father either ignored or never heard these voices and just uses his souls for power. Because Hoenheim allowed the souls to maintain their individuality, they can still act of their own accord. What we see is the souls interacting with the souls inside Father and turning them against him, tearing him apart from the inside.
