'Why did they build up Hughes as such a nice guy with a family to do this?' well that's simple, Hiromu Arakawa likes to reach into our chests, pull our hearts out and show it to us, whispering 'you won't need that anymore anyway' and then crushing it.

The lizard on his glove is representative of a salamander, a lizard said to be born of and able to create fire. This most likely originated from them hibernating in logs in the winter months and when humans would throw the logs on the fire the now VERY awake salamanders would scramble out of the burning logs.

As an addendum to this, the writer for FMA was very educated on Alchemy and most of the transmutation circles display that knowledge wonderfully. I’d definitely look up videos of actual alchemists reviewing the series.

I think it's because he was around for almost half of the original series. If I recall it was the first season finale when we got the events of this episode.

@@John_Stephens43 Maybe for me I always though of it as SPOILERS He just has a general impact on the show after his death 99.9% of Roy's actions are centered around catching envy. So it just feels like he is still there. Idk tho

"Why didnt you Go after him?" Becouse he saw her "die". In case this attempt fails they made sure that their Regeneration ability was'nt leaked. The secluded place? Remember that he was seriously wounded. He needed a secure line, but could'nt get very far.

You can care less about Armstrong???? He's like a big gentle giant! He has a heart of gold. He's basically the embodiment of a super tough guy that looks like he could kill you with one thumb but in reality he's a huge softie that wouldn't harm a fly. Well, unless you hurt his friends...you'd be turned into a pancake with one of the various techniques that *HAS BEEN PASTED DOWN THE ARMSTRONG FAMILY LINE FOR GENERATIONS!!* He'll grow on you I hope. I'm glad you liked Hughes tho, few people didn't like him for some weird reason and weren't even moved by his death scene. So I'm glad you liked his character for the short amount of time he was around. Rip, it's indeed a terrible day for rain.

Second saddest episode of full metal alchemist brotherhood, the fact Envy shapeshifted into Hughes wife to kill him is insult to injury.

There's so much in these episodes because they are just speeding through the season since they already covered it in the first FMA. After this season the pacing gets much better.

The main reason the episodes are so packed is largely due to the 2003 anime. The early part of Brotherhood covers the same(ish) story as the first 33 episodes of the original. When making Brotherhood the creators rushed through this part as they assumed people had already seen the first one. For example this is episode 10, however in the original Hughes dies in episode 25, and because we as an audience spent more time with him this hit waaaaaay harder. I personally do recommend people watch the 03 show first as the build up is better, though I do understand why these days most will ust watch Brotherhood. Once Brotherhood splits of on it's own though I do feel it is the better show, and the pacing is at a much more even pace.

As much as I love Brotherhood, the first 13 episodes are really difficult and frustrating to watch for me because I enjoyed the execution of those major plot elements much more in the 2003 series. While I can understand why the production team assumed most audiences would have already seen the first FMA series when making Brotherhood, I feel that by making the episodes with that mindset undermines the pacing and structure of the original manga that the show is trying to be faithful too.

The idea that Brotherhood condensed the beginning is just incorrect. The 2003 anime took the story from the manga and stretched it out. For reference, the manga was 108 chapters long and Hughes dies at the end of chapter 15, so you could actually say that Hughes lasted longer in Brotherhood than he did in the source material.

@@burk314 It’s not so much that it feels condensed, but rather it feels like the episodes are going through the motions and hitting each important plot beat it needs to without letting the individual stories breathe and sink in for the audience. “City of Heresy” I think suffers the worst from this because the editing and shot composition of the episode tries to be experimental and reminiscent of the manga (even though not every element from the first two chapters were adapted into the episode).

The sneezing scene you were talking about, sorry to say but they really aren’t connected. Roy had just finished facing the freezer and had spent a lot of the fight doused in water so he had caught a cold. It seems to be a pretty common trope in anime that being soaking wet the immediate concern is you are going to catch a cold.

1:40 Well, it's good no one spoiled anything, was afraid that is where it was leading, but overall, I think I won't confirm or deny anything. It'd be more fun this way. On that note, though, if you ever watch Attack on Titan, don't google anyone, you'll get immediately spoiled. Although, I personally wouldn't be recommending AoT very much. It burned out too fast for me and once they tried to explain everything, it got silly. 2:36 Yes and no. 7:50 And he was just two days away from retirement.

Roy's line there about it 'raining', is basically just him saying, he feels useless. It's a play on his whole _thing_ as an alchemist.

@@Animelon im lost count how often i watched this anime . its great so emotional, deep and full of story. there are episodes who make you feel sick. you trie to never like anyone because of the fear the person could die in the next episode but in the end its great...just great. Ah, another good anime is shield hero

I was more under the impression that he said it because he started crying and is futilely trying to convince himself and Hawkeye that the water on his face is rain, since it would be 'improper' for a big, strong officer to cry at a funeral. Thus Hawkeye catches on and agrees. But I like your symbolism better.

You're already putting it together, but let the story unravel lol. Hughes is a very smart guy. He was killed for knowing too much based on context right now. Trust me. This part of the story carries on for a while, and it has a beautiful resolution once it ends

We salute you Brigadier General, the world is a darker place without your smile. Hughes had no reason to think he'd be followed at that time, he had just killed the woman that confronted him. Your instincts on the outside line are pretty good. While he knows that wasn't his wife 1. for someone to change completely (even clothes) is... ridiculous and 2. Emotions are hard and that was his wife regardless of it not being her and as we know he is ridiculously in love with that woman.

Id assume that the lizard would be a salamander. they were associated with fire in medieval europe. this is confirmed by fiction past and present. also pokemon charmander = charred +salamander. :3 yea the teacher doesnt know becausae they trained with her the the hidden intention committing taboo after training. then once training was complete they went home to do the dirty deed.

So, I didn't see anyone commenting on this, so I will. The phone booth Hughes went to is implied to be the closest one to the command center. He wouldn't call on a military line, so he went to the nearest line he thought he could trust. 11:12

Considering the divide was 10 episodes here and 25 episodes in the 03 anime…yeah those of us who saw Brotherhood got one heck of a gut punch if they saw the original anime afterwards. You should be close to the point we’re the main divergence begins in a few episodes.

"Fullmetal Alchemist: Getting to watch your favorite character die three times!" FMA 2004 had a lot of filler and padding going on since they couldn't out-pace the manga but were still producing episodes faster than the author was producing chapters, so we got a lot more Hugues screentime as a result. Naturally, this made his passing all that much more sad when it happened ... :(

Damn, I always forget that they killed off Hughes in episode 10. Didn't even make it 1/6th of the way through the show. If it's any consolation as far as the events leading up to Hughes's death, there's nothing he could have done. As you already put together, the seven deadly sins people can regenerate, do even if Hughes did attack Envy, it wouldn't have done anything and Envy would have still shot him. Envy just wanted to be cruel. That's just how he is. You'll learn to hate him pretty quickly.

Flashbacks in anime are a "Death Flag." While he isn't as present in this version, Mayes was always trying to quietly step in and be a protector/father figure to Ed and Al. But Mayes was really a great guy in both versions of the show, and this is why I absolutely hate this episode of a great show. He did what he did because he figured it out, he put the dots together, he learned the truth and paid the price. Now, Mustang must figure it out and put the pieces together. Okay, I'm going to go huddle in a corner now, I really hate this episode...

Their teacher is hands down the scariest woman in this show. Mustang is not King Bradly's son he is gunning for his job. They both know I and that is why Mustang was staring at Bradly.

One if he was followed he didn’t want anyone else to get involved. Two. Remember he’s a person, he has emotions seeing his wife holding the gun especially how much he loved her caused him to be shellshocked. Three. Being alone on the street isn’t a bad thing you won’t have people over hear it would suck if civilians got involved.

Hughes death in the original FMA was more emotional because he stayed around longer due to the direction the anime went to. We got to know him longer so I think they speed things up when it came to Brotherhood . But it’s about to get serious now

Yeah I definitely felt it more in the original, but those who watched the original already saw it coming in Brotherhood so it's hard to tell how we'd react if it was a first time watch lol.

The 03 part also had the Elric brothers there for Elicias birth. Brotherhood follows the Manga, were they also only knew Hughes for a few months.

We're over the worst gut punches! There are, uh... still _plenty_ more, but, uh... the one's I would classify as "manipulative", for lack of a better term, are out of the way! Yeah! With Nina/Alexander and Hughes, you as a viewer can almost _feel_ the creators reaching through the screen and grabbing at your heart, but that doesn't happen again for the rest of the show (or at least, not as bad). You get your heartache in much more manageable portions instead! They've set the stakes and the tone, so you know what's coming - there's no more need for the battering rams, so to speak. Uh. If this isn't reassuring then I'm sorry, but it's for the best - additional clarity would result in spoilers. Um... ah, rest assured, there are plenty of high points coming as well! FMA is a fantastic story, and it knows how to balance things! There we go, that was probably better at being reassuring, right? (... those gut punches to come, though... oh boy, I can't wait!)

this anime is pretty heavy on actual alchemical lore. even the main plot is based on it. the symbol in roy's glove is an actual alchemical sign. the lizard represents a salamander, those were strongly associated with fire back in the day.

"It's terrible day for rain" That's not just about Roy crying for Hughes. He's feeling his powerlessness in protecting his beloved friend, like how he feels useless in rainy day because it seals his flame alchemy

Hughes's death is the author reaffirmed that no character is safe from death, Nina's death would be enough for some but since she died on the same episode she was introduced that set the precedent "don't get attached to characters quickly because they're likely to die fast" but unlike Nina, Hughes was developed over multiple episodes you got to know him and his relationships his hopes and dreams and then he dies in the middle of nowhere alone failing his mission, this set precedence of "how long you know a character or how beloved they are to you means nothing absolutely no one is safe". Also that line from Mustang "It's an awful day for rain" has meaning besides being a manly way of saying "I'm NoT cRyInG yOu ArE!" see characters keep calling Mustang useless on rainy days and him calling that a rainy day is him admitting how useless he feels.

Hughes is super smart; his decision to not make the call to Roy from the office was a risk he wasn’t willing to take. Going off alone to another phone was a risk he WAS willing to take.

Be happy that you didn't knew Hughes for longer like some of us did through the first Fullmetal Alchemist anime. He's having way more screen time there and is even more likeable in it. So consider yourself blessed.

Maes is the very embodiment of 'gone, but not forgotten'. It's easy at this stage to observe that he was brought in to care for just to die to show stakes (a well used and effective trope), but the show's writers are better than that. His death has weight.

Hughs death is still one of the saddest moments in anime for me. His funeral breaks my heart every time I watch it. Although watching what happens to L and E 😉especially the tongue thing 😂I rewatch that a lot.

That “it’s a terrible day for rain” moment is a reference to old, 20th center action manga. Male action heroes were not allowed to appear “weak” back then, so crying was something they simply couldn’t do. This exact interaction between Mustang and Hawkeye would occasionally take place in these manga, as the closest the hero was allowed to come to openly crying. One of the manga that helped break this trend was Fist of the North Star, as the hero, Kenshiro, openly cries when tragic things happen, proving that a character could be “manly” and still shed tears.

It's not the people you like. Hughes was not a person to like. He was a tool. A plot device. A Mustang Motivator™. Just like Ninaxander was an Elric Motivator™. Edit: Not sure about you, but for me? There were three more deaths I shed a tear over. And two more that hit close to home, but not close enough to cause tears. And none of them were human. Well... One had the soul of a human.
