This was one of my favorite episodes. I like how they show Ed and Al’s perspective on child birth as alchemists, how they are so amazed that humans can be created by other humans naturally but it can’t be done thru alchemy and it’s just a wholesome episode. And this was definitely a Winry build up episode also.

Ed means that when he tried to save life and love with his mother, brother and the chimera girl, he feel like he messed up terribly. Now that the demands of life are here again, he is still unsure if anything he tries is worth anything.

Considering the brothers went to her for training as young as they were then went back home and on the first day back visited the grave and then performed the transmutation, I'm not sure how it's so hard to believe the teacher didn't know. They aren't neighbors, they don't live close to each other, so it's kinda a reasonable thing to assume she didn't know.

0:42 I sometimes feel it necessary to illuminate, for the same of those who might not know, an Ouroboros is a depiction of a serpent devouring its own tail. It's a pretty common mythological image associated especially with the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

In both the manga and the first anime, Mr Dominic freaked out in fear when he found out who Winry's grandmother is. I forget if it was because he was intimidated by her skill with Auto Mail, or because of her personality; but it was still pretty hilarious, and I wished they had kept that bit in this version as well.

Pinako is a better Automail engineer but it was primarily because of her personality, she terrifies him and I too wish it'd been included in this version of the series.

So around the 10:00 mark you talk about how you’re making a big deal about it, but as someone whose watched the series, this is actually a pretty big point of character growth for Ed. The big thing that led to him doing human transmutation and thinking there was a way to fix the little girl and her dog is that he has a bit of a god complex. That he thinks that he should be able to do everything. With the good intention of helping people of course, but still he’s unable to accept his own limitations. And that’s why he’s so upset at himself for not being able to do anything in such a stressful and potentially dangerous situation. Because he feels like he should be able to just fix it. As someone who grew up constantly being told how smart, and mature, and ‘gifted’ I was, I can definitely relate a little to setting expectations for yourself that are far to high to meet and then feeling like a failure when you predictably fail to meet them.

Not sure I noticed this before but if that automail model Winry geeked out over was a "Gotz" model that has to be a reference to Götz von Berlichingen a German mercenary who lost his hand in battle and replaced it with an iron prosthetic earning him the nickname Götz of the Iron Hand. Fun fact

1:10: Ed needs a mechanical arm and leg that function for his purposes. He isn't an automail fanatic like Winry who is impressed with the latest models. For Ed, automail is an unwanted, but necessary part of life. For Winry, automail is an art form and a family business spanning three generations that her life largely revolves around.

During the start of the show I really wasn't the biggest fan of Winry, but these past few episodes really cements her character. Her interactions to Hawkeye and the rest of the Military was like her only interesting part until a few episodes ago.
