Fans get all excited about the term "backup", as if you're only going to play 5 minutes a season. Were Solskjaer and Sheringham backups? Well, technically they were - first choice was obviously Yorke and Cole. But they're still important players, they still played loads, and they still became figures of folklore in our club because of the contributions they made (Solskjaer in particular). If being Solskjaer in 98/99 is being a backup, then most players would accept that.

Sheringham was first choice in 97/98, 99/00 and 00/01. It was only the treble season that he wasn't. Also, united only play one striker now so there are less opportunities for back up strikers nowadays.

@@Stan.k.Phlaps6447 Fair point, but even in 98/99 Sheringham played 27 games. Solskjaer played 37. There are so many games in a season right now, that even a back up will play loads. United do only play 1 striker instead of 2, but we also don't have 4 strikers to keep happy so it works out the same. We can't have Hojlund playing 60 games a season, but if we have one strong alternative (like Zirkzee) then that backup is guaranteed to play at least 20 games a season, probably more.

Your logic about whether Zirkzee will start or not is flawed. We payed alot for höjlund, but i think he is still raw and more suited to a role from the bench. Zirkzee had a better season and has a higher ceiling. I can easily see him starting instead of höjlund. You can’t compare this to van der saar vs Buffon who had a bigger age difference.
