at about 5:08 this can be done by right clicking the slider (on the outside of the group) and going copy driver and pasting it into the pos value on the colour ramp. Now to work out how to add a driver for the colour and have this all in one single colour ramp (ideally)

Doesn't seem to work if you connect the output value of another node to the input value of falloff. In other words, the falloff can't be driven by another node's value.
