A 2012 15" is an awesome macbook even by 2020 standards. New SSD, fresh OS install and extra RAM and it'll be ready for Thunder Road. 8GB RAM and 250GB SSD would be fine, but if it's for graphics/video more is better.

When installing the SSD, you also need to transfer over the 4 silver pins that are screwed into the existing HDD. They locate the SSD inside the Macbook and will anchor it down to prevent it moving. Edit: Never mind...sorry just saw the part where you transferred them over.

Nice video. With how fast the fans are cranking before and after the upgrades, it sounds like you need to reapply new thermal paste. (EDIT* I saw posted comment afterwards...) I just did this with a much older 2008 MacBook Pro 17in and the fans barely run now. I have such an old machine running El Capitan for a simple reason, older software simply does not run on newer versions of Mac OS. Software such as Photoshop CS6, Aperture, Microsoft Office without a subscription ETC. I would rather keep an older machine running than shell out monthly usage subscription fees for software that I bought once and own forever.

Hi! I have a 2011 15' MBP and had the logic board replaced back in 2016 when apple announced a recall program for this particular model. But 2 years later by December 2018, it failed again, with blue screen and lines, or just a plain white screen. I've read it's also because of gpu issues with this particular model. Now, I'm thinking of having it checked and repaired in a local repair shop, then yeah ask to have the ram and hdd upgraded to an ssd. Do you think it'll last for at least another 2 years? I'm worried since people on the internet say its a gpu issue and replacing the logic board, the issue may just appear again...

If I wanted to start my computer with no data and just a blank ssd, do i need a sata cable or can I just install it and then reinstall macOS?
@DammitJeff4 жыл бұрын
Nah you can just pop in the SSD and reinstall macOS no problem, no need for a sata cable 🤗

@@DammitJeff Thanks! Would I need a thumb drive or can I just format the disc and download the OS from the internet? Also, would these parts work on a 13 inch MBP from the same year? I'm very new to this stuff lol

Wow, in 9 years, the gpu on that 2011 MBP still worked in 2020.

When I replace both RAM cards, my laptop won't boot. But when I keep one of the old one and replace the other it works fine. Any idea what could be the problem? I have the same model and got the same replacement parts.

You could've found 16GB of RAM for under $50 really. Not sure what the budget was here though. Also on these machines, instead of scrapping the HDD, assuming it's still functional, it's better to save it and use it as either a built-in Time Machine back up, or media drive. Then, you install the SSD in the optical drive bay. You'll still get SATA3 speed. Also, I can't tell from the shot, but should disconnect the battery when installing the SSD. Maybe you did, but I couldn't tell.

Did you clean the fan portion where it goes into the vents? Also was the thermal paste replaced?
@DammitJeff4 жыл бұрын
Yes and yes. I made a second video over on my Instagram documenting the process. You can check it out in the description! Same as my name. 🤗 thank you for watching dude!

@@DammitJeff Nice! Also by curiosity were the bottom leg pads replaced as they seemed... well, heavily use lol

TechThatYT I asked the guy if he wanted to order the parts to replace them and then ripped off the rest as I handed it to him. Then I got sad. :(

I need to do the same, but with an iMac 2011. However, it's a pity that there's no update to Mojave.
