Hey all, a little more context on the numbers given in the bit on CO2 emissions: All info on the Polestar 4’s footprint can be found here: media.polestar.com/global/en/media/pressreleases/675427/polestar-4-lca-reveals-lowest-carbon-impact-of-all-polestar-vehicles-at-launch The Porsche numbers are based on a new Panamera 4, and use the data from Porsche’s website: www.porsche.com/uk/models/panamera/panamera-models/panamera-4/ The Kia numbers are based on a new 1.0 manual Picanto, and use the data from the official specsheet: www.kia.com/content/dam/kwcms/kme/uk/en/assets/vehicles/All-New%20Picanto/Specifications/picanto-specification.pdf The data on UK grid mix data was supplied by friend of the channel, Dr Euan McTurk. He has made several videos on this topic: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJXUpXmOrql_f9Esi=XdLK6j_vF0uayreJ This is in absolutely no way intended as a slight on the Porsche or Kia, I’m simply using them as examples to highlight the absurdity of the claim that EVs “aren’t even greener”. Hope you enjoyed the video!

I looked back at 'How Bad are Bananas' and there is a figure of £360 per £1000 spent on a car - based on the input-output model. That puts the Porsche Panamera 4's embedded carbon at 30.6 tonnes Co2 equivalent. Looking at it another way the average UK car is calculated as having a carbon footprint of 530Kg Co2e per 1000 miles, which would give 100 tonnes for the same 200,000 miles.

I hate pointless sub-menus under menus - when a physical button would do it easier and faster. plus, I question the safety of moving basic functionality onto touchscreens. A physical button, with a bit of muscle memory, are able to operated without you needing to think about it - thus keeping you connecting on the road, and not a screen!

Yup - and NCap will require physical buttons on their safety evaluations (from this year, I think?) for 'core inputs', specifically to address the safety issues of having to try and use a touchscreen whilst driving. Personally, I'm surprised no automaker has looked at 'Soft Keys' (physical buttons that just trigger the software, the same as if you tapped on the touchscreen)... because then they could design an 'optional' button panel (that clips/screws into place, for stability) that provides the physical controls some drivers want - without any significant cost (just needs a USB cable or similar).

I actually like the side profile (sideview in proper technical drafting parlance) of this model. More to the point, the fact the roof swoops down only after the head position of the rear-seat passenger is absolutely fine by me because it's actually executed in a way that's quite aesthetically pleasing. But those annoyances as you approached the car (that key fob and car handle ignoring each other) plus the heating snafus, yeah, they're actually rather disastrous.
@PeterMeijnen
@PeterMeijnen Күн бұрын
I agree with optical side of things, although the 3 is also very attractive. I've had my LRDM Performance 4 for about 7 weeks now and I've done almost 6.000km. So far, the car has virtually always recognized the key fob, maybe missing it 2 or 3 times. The heated steering wheel was annoying, but it can be switched off so that it doesn't start every time you get in. The beeping when you go over the speedlimit is required of every new car in Europe, but there is a shortcut on the steering wheel to switch it of. Unfortunately, this has to be done every power cycle, but again this is by law. Yes, the software still has quite a few bugs, but the good thing about software is it's ability to be improved over time and over the air 😉 Since I've had the 4 they've released one update (4.1.10 -> 4.1.11) and already it is noticeably better. Polestar has said the next update, out sometime this quarter (hopefully), is especially focused on the ADAS, and making it more "European". Anyway, just wanted to share some of my experiences as a happy owner, and looking forward to more videos from Fully Charged!

@@GeniusUnleashed Honestly, I even like the face 🤭. It’s a bit “safe”but it’s sometimes good not to veer into the radical at the risk of a total bomb. (The only part I could yearn for a re-design would be the rear bonnet/boot.) Anyways, when it comes to Volvos and the Scandinavians, i can honestly say it’s down to their mastery of pragmatic minimalism rather than safe-ism. To boot, they’ve stuck to that ethos for so long and so successfully (design wise) that I’m glad they kept to a good thing - because rarely anyone else does anymore.

This is one of the most stunning cars on the road! I love it and it drives fantastic! Why complain about a plastic key when you know owners will use their phone to lock the car, it's just being petty. It's the same when car reviewers complain about going into the screen to adjust things when there is an excellent voice control available. I never had this in a car but was surprised how accurate Google maps was for example to put in a destination. It's fine if you are being critical but be fair too... We need a NARROW EV car that can fit into normal places, and I'm saying this as someone living in Canada, where we are used to large cars (F150 everywhere), but we also have houses with driveways from 1900s no wider than 7ft. Also, kinda makes me think BMWs door handle/locking/reversing solutions from 15 years ago are still the best.

I quite like the Polestars, and they were in the mix when I surveyed the Australian market and bought an EV, three and a bit months ago. I went for a 2024 Kia EV6 GT-Line RWD and it is marvellous. Its remote has both Auto and Manual door unlock (and remote switch-on, drive forwards or backwards if that floats your boat) and the keyfob experience has been spot on. No guessing about how to get into the car. The driving experience is exemplary in every way - handling, acceleration, comfort - and the automated systems are comprehensive but not intrusive and are configurable in a really granular way. And for me, a person who REALLY wants to drive an Estate/Station Wagon, the EV6 comes closest to the the body type that I love, available in Oz. You can press the down button on the left to disable the (mandatory) speed limit warning. You can set the shortcuts app to always have a big button to disable all annoying functions with one press and have it always on the screen (instead of showing you do/dont have a phone connected). Automated heating steering wheel is a setting (that is off by default when you get the car). Most gripes mentioned are easy fixed is you spend 10 minutes clicking through some menus once.

Dear Polestar: 1) A car should not do things FOR me; like steering wheel heating, massage me, try to force me back into the lane (when I'm avoiding a road hazard on purpose) etc. 2) Pop-out door handles are idiotic, at best... It just another potential point of failure. 3) Physical buttons are king; adjusting a mirror should not be software based. For me, this is an automatic deal breaker. 4) Are those HAPTIC buttons on the steering wheel!? If so, no.. Just no... 5) Not a fan of a center console/bar between myself and the passenger seat. My take away: Polestar is 100% not for me.

I think generally, people consider you need between 0.5 and 0.7 litres of oil to get 1 liter of fuel to the station, And then there is the fact that EV last longer and batteries almost last for decades, with maintenance and repair. So an EV will gladly run for 500 000 kms.

Seriously though. that was a very memorable little comparison. It fits with my argument that if you insist on not having a BEV, then buy the smallest, most efficient wee petrol car that you can get away with. For now, at least. Or for those who don't want to commit any any new CO2 tonnage from a BEV, buy Used. Plenty of them now.

At one point in time, the amount of electricity alone (ignoring everything else including the gas burned for the heating in fractional distillation and hydrocarbon cracking) used in the refinement of gasoline, was enough to get a Nissan Leaf further than that petrol would propel the average American car. Before you burn the fuel in the car, it's already used more electricity than it would have if it were an EV to do the same journey. Meaning that switching to EV's would result in less electricity being used. And that's ignoring the CO2...

I have been driving a rental Polestar 2 for quite a bit recently and find the sloping roof making it much more "unusable" for proper travel (we were in NL/UK) with 3 people and three big suitcases (in the UK we had 5 people in it, all adult size). I really don't like the hatchback designs and would not get a car that is that cramped in the luggage space. As for the driving, I loved it. I hope this one does have a bit more luggage space.

Starting at £58k there are still a lot of people in the uk that can afford to buy or lease the Polestar 4 but at this price there is so much competition in the premium market it needs to be class leading. I think it looks great inside and out and when you can buy the longest range model s used with low mileage for £20k less it’s a hard time to be a pricey EV.

Nice looking, price meets the point. I wish they worked a bit more on the practicality (menu systems, rear window) and not trying to think so much outside of the box as a negative point.. I could finance or private lease it if I felt fine with spending 50% of my income on a car plus a house but that just isn't something I wish to do while supporting 2 kids. I hope they sell and Polestar can continue to make beautiful-looking cars at the least.

@logicalChimp
@logicalChimp Күн бұрын
No *individual owner* runs it for that long, usually... but that's why Jack was emphasising 'Lifetime' emissions.... and also highlighting how biased (in favour of petrol) those numbers were (ie excluding new ICE production emissions, excluding all refining / shipping emissions for the petrol itself, and so on). iirc the 'battery emissions' are less than 50% of the total emissions... but lets say it is 50%. That means that making the rest of the car emits 10T of C02... and that an ICE would emit the same (plus a little bit more for the production of the ICE drivetrain - engine, gearbox, clutch, and so on) at a minimum (no idea how much 'emission saving' there is in those fancy sustainable Polestar materials, etc). Separately, that 1L 'most efficient' example ICE was emitting a shade over 9T of C02 per 50k miles... which is a not-unreasonable number of miles for a first owner (my second-hand one-prior-owner leased Tesla came with 56k on the clock)... which means that someone buying an ICE and doing 50k miles will have generated ~19T of C02 (not including the emissions from refining and shipping the petrol)... equivalent to the emissions from making the EV. And if they bought the EV instead, and charging it at home on a green tariff - then that first owner would have 'paid off' all the production emissions just during their ownership, and it would - effectively - be emission-free for all subsequent owners if that first-time-buyer sold it on after 50k miles. TL;DR: EVs greatly reduce the 'lifetime emissions'. They're not perfectly clean - but then again, the only 'perfectly clean' option is to produce (and buy) nothing.... so the most realistic option is to do what you can to *reduce* those emissions... and sometimes a higher up-front cost more than pays for itself over the lifetime (in finance / economics, as well as C02 emissions).

Not having a rear window, the bugs and features you pointed out, the screen-only infotainment, the price, the size (even if not an SUV), ... it's a car you have to want.
