European automakers seem to be losing it. Renault made a good Megane, but wont deliver it. Stellantis keeps trying to make every car with every drivetrain option at the cost of efficiency. @@jezza6575 There is absolutely NOTHING inferior about a station wagon in comparison with an SUV. In fact, the packaging of SUVs is so bad that they often have less useable space than many sedans that are significantly smaller on their outside dimensions. And SUVs have terrible handling, usually dreadful steering and awful general dynamics. That is because the entire SUV package emphasises a high seating position/Enormous dimensions over everything else, including basic common sense. I love that there is a start to addressing the need for EV estate cars. I still wish that there could be that level of practicality that includes a decent sized tailgate opening. So often on modern estate (ICE) cars the tailgate opening seems to be very narrow on the outside and then even narrower and shorter when the tailgate has been opened. I can imagine that there are enough people using estate cars who want to be able to feed a large object into the back, and not just a large number of small squashy bags. I have had three Skoda Octavia estates, 2001, 2008, 2016, and each one has been a little more refined, and a little less practical for cargo capacity, ie: my tool boxes don't fit properly anymore, and I can't carry a 3m long soil pipe inside! 😄

The boot size was slightly smaller in the SUV than the estates but still ok. The higher driving position in the SUV is great and provides much better visibility especially when it’s raining as you are above the worst of the road spray. Most wagons have longer cargo areas then crossovers . Look at the length of the Volvo wagon for example. I'd say large SUV's have the biggest space but the influx of suvs is from small suvs and crossovers with short cargo areas

Boot space is diappointing, Nissan Leaf has 435L in a similarly-or-more compact body.

I loved the NIO brand when I saw it in China but the battery swap is just not going to work in Rural Cambridgeshire. I’ll have to drive to London to swap my battery.

Finally a great electric wagon that as a wheelchair user are great for getting in and out as they are lower than all those horrible suvs

I would venture to guess that most of the range reduction is a result of increased aero drag. The roof extending out farther back with less taper.
@schuppert5176 Жыл бұрын
No guessing required. This is definitely the reason.

Loved the 'Tinder' reference 🤣🤣Agree we need more practical wagons instead of SUV's. Great Vid. 👍

Nice looking EV! What are its pulling capabilities? Makes all the difference! Drive carefully, & keep your smiles on!

With the optional electric tow bar, ET5 Touring can pull trailers weighing up to 1,400kg.

1400 kilos... it will probably do 2000 as well.

Looking forward to trying one of these in UK as need a replacement for a 3 series Touring and in the seeming minority that don't want a SUV, well done Nio. Ominous rise of the Chinese auto industry as European manuf rush to go upmarket can see them taking significant share

My family had to go the SUV route with our current vehicle because of very limited, functional car options in Canada. I would absolutely shortlist this wagon/estate if it became available in my market. And the price was competitive. It’s beautiful, powerful, has very good range and looks very practical for family use and adventures. Fingers crossed this comes to disrupt the incumbents and their SUV only approach.

Dunno if you have have the Subaru outback in Canada that seems like good choice if you do have, off road dirt tracks in your area?

This looks like it has all the disadvantages of the bottom half of an SUV, without the interior height.

That's the colour I call wet concrete! - - So, there you were, extolling on the extra legroom in the back etc, and you had a tape measure to check how high the hatch-latch was, that you banged your head on, but you didn't measure the available length inside with the seats down., even though you dropped the middle of the back seat - 'for carrying those bits of wood'. Still, MG5 now has a rival, providing it is an affordable one.

Love it. Really want and dare I say it, need a car almost like this. Can’t wait for something between the MG5 and this. I’ve got two messy muddy kids and we do actually use our car for adventures. Why would I want to pay this type of money to ruin such a beautiful car interior? Need a Passat/Mondeo/408 estate EV!!!!!!!

Yeah: the return of the wagon, which has been my choice for some 15 years. My 2004 Saab 9-5 2.3 turbo wagon is perfectly sized, and plenty quick. Now, if they go hub motors and non rare earth mineral batteries I could be a buyer, price depending

NOT A WAGON! I grew up with estate cars in the UK, and they were practical vehicles that you could go to the antique dealer with (Volvo anyone) and pick up a table. Haul some plywood, camp or just fill with the dog crate and groceries. Aerodynamics have destroyed this practicality as boots/trunks have become so tapered and lowered that they are no more than elongated hatch backs. So now, I'm left with no option but an SUV (or truck!) to get the same flexibility. Especially here in Canada. Bring back REAL wagons and estate cars, and I'll be so happy!

The problem with this car - as well as with the MG5 - is the sloping down roofline. I understand that it has some kind of an influence on the aerodynamics and efficiency of the car, but if they had kept the roofline straight until the end of the car, it would utilise more headspace for the backseat passangers and add some additional cargo space to the trunk. Also, it looks bloody weird :/ looking at MG5 pictures online gave me the impression that something was off with the design of the car and when I had seen one in out in the wild, I noticed that it was the sloping down roofline which created this weird feeling for the design. But yes, station wagons NEED TO make a comeback in the world of SUVs - still waiting for the IONIQ 6 station wagon version 🤞

I'm with you brother. A boxy wagon is a wonderful thing. Car manufacturers need to to OWN the wagon design rather than try to make it look like a coupe. I think the Ioniq5 wagon would be the boxy beauty that we both crave.
@sIightIybored Жыл бұрын
The annoying thing is how high the bottom of the boot is, I presume it's the batteries but it basically means this and the MG5 are SUV's with squashed roofs.
@SylverWWA Жыл бұрын
@@sIightIybored That is indeed a very annoying trend I have noticed with today's station wagons (and some sedans/saloons as well): they sit waaaaaaaaaaaaay too frikkin' higher than a regular sedan. For starters, I thought the MG5 was just another streched out SUV cuz it does not even look nearly as sleek and low-sitting as a station wagon should be. Muscular station wagons like the Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum or Cadillac CTS-V Wagon are A-OKAY, cuz their sedan versions are bulky as well but not to the level of those hideous Mercedes and BMW sedan-SUVs I see frequently in my area -_-

As per other comments here, we are not all obsessed with SUVs. My favourite cars have been estates/station wagons. These make for efficient and practical vehicles. As an EV convert, I would love to own a Tesla Model 3 wagon/estate - Elon, are you a subscriber to FCS? Please, let’s have an M3 wagon!
