I loved how Jack whistled when Polański won Oscar for directing The Pianist. That was the coolest thing ever. He didn't give a damn about public stigma and just cheered for his friend. Beautiful.

Not a particularly clever joke, since Republicans make any b-level film or TV celebrity who smiles in their direction the President. In the last 45 years, all Republican Presidents have either been a film or TV celeb or a Bush, and closet celebrity worship and name recognition is the the right wing's substitute for policy

The slap ruined it for me! Brought me back to 1972 when I escaped the man who abused me! Poor Chris had to just stand there….I ran for my life with my 4 children! No home,no $ ,no car… but I was free!

In my opinion it was one of the best Oscars opening acts ever. Intelligent, smart and funny. Steve Martin is super profesionalist so timing is perfect, and everything is thoughtful. Look, how he looks at Nicole Kidman :)

From some AFI Lifetime achievement awards to Oscars back in those days, here I am, introduced to "Steve Martin". I mean, that mostly straight face speaking casual still gets me anyway lol. And, Jack interacts his way, which actually adds the right kind of flavor and there we go, the net laughter ages very well. All in all, ol' cool people. Going for these types of clips is a genuinely entertaining journey I guess?!

Diane Lane was with Josh Brolin at this time. Legend has it he was outrageously jealous. She was nominated this night for her role in "Unfaithful", which is a film he had not liked her doing. Note how concerned she looks and looks over at him like, OMG, when Steve put her on that list. She was genuinely thinking, "Damn it, Steve, now I will have to deal with this asshole, later." A little over a year after this, he was arrested for domestic assault against her, but she didn't press charges.
