I am honestly getting tired with the way Sega tends to handle Shadow. They use him as fan-bait to get you excited and then call it a day. They rely on his presence alone to carry the story. They did the same thing in Sonic Boom and they did it again in Sonic Prime. They kept coming up with excuses to keep him out of the story, which at that point I would have preferred they split him up like they did with everyone else. At least then they would have done something interesting with him. At least in Sonic Boom it made a bit more sense. What with it being a seperate universe, therefore the characters acting as different as they do. What frustrates me even more is the fact that Sonic himself doesn’t inquire or worry about Shadow’s well being after he is out of the Grim. It’s not just that the audience forgets he is in the story, it’s that Sonic does too. And the emerald didn’t come into play at all, aside from the ending. When it was tossed into the void I thought that either Shadow or Sonic would fall in and get out by teleporting with it. But nope!! The Chaos Emerald was excused out of the plot, just like Shadow was.

I think the biggest problem with Sonic Prime was the side-lining of Shadow. Through all three seasons, he only does something near the beginning and end of each season. In fairness, season one was dedicated to establishing each shatter-verse, but the subsequent seasons had him side-lined and not doing much while Sonic was helping his various friends. He didn't need to OP, but I think he needed more involvement with the plot. Also, there were too many fight scenes. The War stuff was cool, but then it got tiring after a while. Wish there was more down time. But other than that... it was a solid Sonic Cartoon. Genuinely good story arc, fun action and acting, and I really dug Deven Mack as Sonic! I hope he goes on to voice Sonic in future projects...

Bro doesn't understand the concept of ending a show by saying "their adventure continues." Its literally just there to say "hey, even though its over, you can be content knowing that Sonic and his pals are still going on adventures." Its their way of saying things have returned to normal. There's nowhere the story could go from here. The prism was taken away by Shadow, and Sonic can no longer travel between worlds. It would just end up being Sonic fighting Eggman again like always, and there's no real point in that since there's no story to tell.
@ArtzyZero8 ай бұрын
I think the biggest problem with how much Sega is pushing Shadow is that they screwed themselves over by making him so one note. So now they're stuck wanting to put Shadow in everything because he's so popular but never knowing how to properly use his character because of how Sega insists he is depicted. Even though in Sonic 06 he'd pretty much moved past being rivals with Sonic and opened up to working with and properly acknowledging his friends, that development was thrown out the window in favour of him being an edgelord who doesn't believe in friendship. I haven't watched Prime but from the clips I've seen it does look like Shadow has at least a little bit of his old self when it comes to co-operating with others.
@Bird-wz7nx8 ай бұрын
They should have had at least three episodes dedicated to a total My Little Pony style Nine redemption arc, because they were definitely hinting at the Sad Fox Boi's sense of distrust being rooted in self-destructive tendencies. With the bad guy being a misguided Tails, this is THE best time for a big ol Friendship climax! Nine is definitely showing a strong potential for self-deletion, (leave me alone forever, I'm willing to speed up the apocalypse in a calculated risk that you probably will hand over your power, I literally have nothing to lose, either I'm right or everything is meaningless, etc) and Sonic could have definitely helped stopped that since Nine even had that little nook set up for him. Shadow could have gotten some great lines in there about moving on, even when it feels like the world is against you/passes you by/etc. Really set up Nine not as this worrysome liability, but as this science based hero who the Shatterepaces could rely on if the Eggmen went too far out of their lane. Frankly, it was kinda weird how they were just going along with the "its ok, just let Nine totally self-isolate forever" thing, too. (What a bad mental health message!) It really felt like the entire point of Shadow's presence in the show would be to have the King of badass cartoon animal loners show how he's learned how even badass cartoon animal loners can benefit from social interactions, helping others, and making the world a better place. Shadow chose to be a Hero, and Sonic's method didn't work, so now it was his turn to try to Friendship monologue. Presumably after he is able to see Nine as his own person and not just a shadow of Tails, and is inspired by... idk, his determination? (He spends the entire show rightfully pissed at Sonic and Nine, so he would need some epiphany) Nine would listen to Shadow because Shadow understands what its like to see everyone else as pointless and unreliable. And just how ludicrous a premise that friends actually results in personal betterment. (And then people would be mad forever because Shadow finally got his own multi-tailed fox sidekick, who then got shoved into an alternate reality, never to be seen again, lol) Then, after the Self-Help portion of the finale, they should have had a cool ending where a character from each shatterspace takes on some shatter energy and they force the energy together in some climax event with rainbows and teamwork. (further justifying the Pirate Amy promotion to Captain, for one) Not them just standing around in a lab, with Sonic blatantly not dying and just getting a scifi tummyache. This definitely felt like they stretched half a season into an entire season, with the writers leaving to get milk halfway through, and the battle choreographers picking up ALL the slack. And, like, I still have to respect that. It never got *bad,* just extremely bland, which isn't the worst thing to happen to a sonic project. And they consistently kept the action above average for a kid's cartoon, without a ton of recycled content. If people want nonstop fighting, here you go, a show that actually delivers on that premise for basically an entire season. That's definitely not my thing, but I know some people are constantly talking about how much they want unending fighting, so there you go. A show that pulls a TV-quality, child friendly John Wick for an entire season.
@Miju0018 ай бұрын
I appreciate the discussion of Nine's character plenty! I too agree he's a very conflicted kid who definitely struggles a lot and very much definitely did not deserve Sonic to tell everyone to just leave him alone forever. I don't think Shadow being so empathetic towards Nine would quite fit tbh, he's probably one of the characters who has the most reason to be especially mad at Nine. But one thing that should happen imo, especially if Shadow and Nine talk it out later, is a confrontation where Shadow actually tries to fight against Nine while Nine is going through his "redeeming himself" thing. Sonic could try to stop Shadow, too. It could highlight both aspects of Nine's role in the story (he did some terrible things and so Shadow doesn't like him, but he just wants a friend and so Sonic understands that and backs him up), and it could serve to progress Nine's character even more by showing that Sonic is still firmly on his side.

Personally I really don't like how they handled Nine in this season. I'm not against the idea of him getting a redemption arc, but the season focuses so much on the fighting, that we don't get moments with Nine reflecting on what he did and hint at his possible redemption. The focus should've been on Nine and Sonic, showing Nine's conflicted emotions and Sonic trying to reason with him
@Miju0018 ай бұрын
Strongly agree. Nine at the end of season 2 was a fascinating character, but season 3 kinda fumbled the bag with that
@skysiren41138 ай бұрын
@@Miju001 I feel like in general they leaned too much on him being a villain instead of a character we could sympathise like the first two seasons did. The way they had him act as the season went on, having be more cruel and willing to hurt people made it really hard to see him getting a redemption, and the redemption itself was done way too easily
@Miju0018 ай бұрын
@@skysiren4113 For sure. If the message of the show was that Nine needed to see the value in friendship, then making him as villainous as they did makes it really hard to deliver that message well, because Sonic had to learn the same lesson too and it took him a long time to do that. The other "antagonists" kinda learn that lesson together with Sonic; having Nine be so far behind on that front means that the show was forced to do a 180 with him at the end. Not to mention that I think making Nine more conflicted would have also made him more compelling, and maybe it would have even actually addressed some parts of the conflict between him and Sonic that we don't get to see much in the end (like the whole thing that Nine got mad at Sonic because he saw him as Tails, basically).
@skysiren41138 ай бұрын
@@Miju001 I think the show could've had a scene where when Nine finds out Sonic has the missing piece of the Paradox Prism, we see him look shock and conflicted. Even though Sonic did hurt him, he doesn't want to kill him for it. While yes he would try and go through with it, a scene like that could've showed that Nine is still a good person deep down The more I think about it, Nine in season 3 shares a lot of the same problems as Starlight Glimmer from mlp (as weird as it sounds). Both are characters that the writers want us to sympathise with and want to see be redeemed, but they lean so much into them being villains and not having moments to hint at their human side, that it makes their redemption feel sloppy
@Miju0018 ай бұрын
@@skysiren4113 I'm not familiar with Starlight Glimmer unfortunately, but I had the same exact thought as you about Nine. Unfortunately there is already a basis for him being selfish, since he took the Prism shard for himself in earlier seasons, but still, I think a scene like the one you described could have gone a long way with making Nine more sympathetic, especially if they built upon it afterwards. I've seen some people say this season needed to be condensed, but I don't really agree - I think it needed less action, sure, but also more character moments to sell something like Nine's redemption at the end.

I've seen people say this season needed to be condensed and I disagree, this season's finale (as in everything that happened in the final episode) was way too short. What really annoyed me about the ending was how the solution was reached. The season started with Sonic & Nine both realizing "Hey, literally all of existence is going to crumble if the prism isn't fully restored" and ends with them realizing "Hey, literally all of existence is going to crumble if the prism isn't fully restored" and so Sonic finally lets Nine absorb his energy and fix everything. It truly makes the entire *season* feel completely pointless in retrospect. Sure, some characters may have developed in that time, but none of it was *necessary* for the end to be reached.

It ran for two seasons and has a loose plot with mostly episodic adventures. Great show, I rediscovered it after looking through some old photos and honestly it’s not bad by today’s standards. IMO, the biggest problem of the show is the lack of dialogues. For a person who played no sonic games and got into sonic through this show THIS amount of active fights is actually pretty tiring. When 2nd season came out I watched all episodes in one evening. My head was cracking with pain to the end. 3rd season has a switching glowing background as a treat x( The show just can't slow down for a moment. Oh, wait! It could. In season 1! Like, additional dialogues could somehow close Nine's ark. But no, they just forgot about him. Additional dialogues would make the plot more comprehensible. I rewatched the moment when Sonic notices the palm in Nine's citadel a few times because I couldn't understand WHY did he suddenly think of Nine doing something for HIM. All in all, the 1st season was the most interesting and exciting one and had a BALANCE between action and dialogues and the 3rd has a rushed ending and endless tiring fight with repetative moments and flashy background. Also, I feel really bad for Nine who was just left alone. What life do you expect him to get after THIS? He'll be a lonely, probably HATED, hermit again. His problem is NOT solved. He just went to the background when they sucked out Sonic's energy.

This series was super disappointing. I get I'm not the target audience exactly, I'm sure if I was a kid I would have adored it despite everything the way I did with Sonic X back in the day. But it does feel a little disappointing that in this day and age where it's clear that many adults also enjoy Sonic, it's a bummer that the writing wasn't engaging enough for older audience members too. And I don't mean "I wish there was adult references in this kids show" I just mean that the writing is so simple and weak and I wish it could be stronger for that all ages appeal that shows like Gravity Falls and ATLA did.
