What a surprise to see this video when I got home tonight after a long day of Geocaching. I have been Geocaching for years. I found 6 today alone. I'm out here in the Mojave Desert so there is lots of space to place a cache. We have lots of open flat land and a lot of rocky hills. I do it mostly for the exercise. What I do is drive to within about 1/2 mile from the hiding place and then park the truck and hike the rest of the way. Many times there is a road within 30 feet of the site, but I still park a ways away and hike cross-country. I never thought about putting some of the hikes on my KZbin channel. Maybe I should start doing that. One of the dangers of reaching into a bush to retrieve a cache is the fear that there might be a Mojave Green Rattlesnake in the bush. So before I reach in, I always do a really good inspection to make sure there are no surprises in there for me. There is not so much danger in a city environment, but out in the desert or countryside, you have to be very careful. Especially if you have kids with you. You don't want to have one of them reach into a bush before you have cleared it.

Great points. I wasn't even thinking about those dangers. I'm heading out in the morning to a trail close to the house where there are six or more caches. I upgraded my geocaching.com subscription so I can see all of the caches. Great idea on using the caches to get out and exercise. There's really no reason I am overweight here in Colorado, especially with all the trails and the thousands of geocaches. Thanks for letting me know about you geocaching and the helpful safety tips. Rick

I've found that I didn't need to upgrade to find the other caches. They are shown on the map in white. But you can still find them by using your own navigation methods. You can sign the log book in the cache container, but you can't sign the one online. At least I have not been able to find a way. That's not important to me because I'm mainly just going out for exercise. Let us know how you do tomorrow. Also, I've found that some of the caches are pretty old and have been out there in the element for a long time. In some cases, the log books have been damaged by water. I have started taking a few 1-gallon zip lock bags with me to put the cache in if needed for protection. I then leave a message on the website for the owner advising them of the need for some maintenance. @@outdooremergencytech

Good points. Thanks, and I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow. These will be in a video that I'll probably upload on Monday or Tuesday. I don't think I'm going to create a lot of geocaching videos, but I had several people who asked about geocaching on the 67i, so I am creating a geocaching playlist. I'm actually planning on going live every Sunday at 3 pm, starting on December 23rd. I'll spend 10 or 15 minutes on a different satellite communicator each week, on a specific topic and then after the training, I'll open it up for questions, but I'm sure I'll have no one, or very few for a while, but I have been training hard on the business side of KZbin and going live seems to be a recommendation from many more experienced KZbinrs. I would like to hear your thoughts and opinions on this if you have an opinion and want to leave a comment. Rick

Let me think about that for a while. The only thing I know something about is the Bivy Stick. I use it often.@@outdooremergencytech

That was actually the first topic I wanted to discuss on the live show. I'm not sure what you think about it but would you be open to letting me interview you for one of the live shows and we could talk about everything ACR Bivy Stick? I heard from someone at ACR that there is a new version coming out soon. Rick

Hey there! Hope all is well. I was in the middle of shopping for another gps unit. You helped me with my Inreach mini which has served its purpose well. I even purchased a 2nd one for my girlfriend but I was wondering what would be the best device to have if our grid went down or worse? Ideally something that allows you to navigate more than just your planned routes a plus would be a messaging option to other satellite devices, or does that communication feature not work to other gps messaging devices? I figured I’d reach out to the only person that’s helped with gps units and see what you come up with.

Well, if everything crashes, then none of these devices will communicate because they have to go though servers. Communication would be best with ham radios. However, barring the end of the world scenario, I like the Garmin GPSMAP 67i because you can see the topo maps on the device and don't have to be synced with your smartphone as you do with the Mini and Mini 2. You can communicate with other GPS manufactures and models. The nice thing is with the 67i is that the navigation and maps come with the device and don't require a subscription, so you can navigate and TracBack. Check out my latest video that uploaded this morning to see my geocaching adventure with the 67i. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4fNqoN_q5mFqLM I think it will give you a better idea of how nice it is and how it works. The GPSMAP 67i is now my favorite satellite communicator. It replaced my last favorite, which was the inReach Mini 2. Let me know if you have any other questions or would like some additional advice.

@@outdooremergencytech awesome thankyou! I’ll go check out the video. Great help as always! I recently purchased some ham radios but man is there a steep learning curve. Are you a ham radio guy? I didn’t realize there aren’t any satellite communication options if the grid went down I should have realized that. What about satellite phones? Also, now that I have a 2nd mini 2 and I don’t want it (still in box) it’s past the return date is there a place where people sell there gps devices you know of or should I just put it up on eBay

I think you are as knowledgeable as I am on re-selling. I had two friends that really wanted my 66i and the Mini so I gave them 50% off. It helped me make a little money on them, plus helped two friends be more safe on their adventures. Rick
