The brilliant thing about ancient gold is that although you rightly point out it has a somewhat limited population of dealers and collectors, there are records of people studying, buying and selling them at LEAST since Petrarch, in the 1350s! Thats nearly 700 years ago! And its quite likely people will still be interested in collecting ancient coins 700 years from now 😄

What’s funny is here in Sweden you won’t find a bullion dealer anywhere. There’s some that sales online and a few has a physical shop, however buying and selling numismatic stuff that you can find 1 or 2 shops in any town. Now me I found myself a 3rd party operator that holds my stuff and I make monthly installments. I will however pick up my physical gold once I save enough. All in all the past year I’ve been saving 120 grams = 3,8 ounces along with 140 ounces of silver. For us this is our “bitcoin” we will continue to buy for as long as we have income. The goal is retirement in about 15 years. But if a gold revaluation happens prior to that, who knows.

There are buying/selling opportunities when you have one foot in the bullion side and the other on numismatic gold. Market conditions can shrink or expand the delta between the two. In a way, you aren't putting all your gold in one basket. I'm guessing there are similar opportunities within subsets of each.

I've bought at spot dealers choice a few times. Mostly because non denom rounds are not taxed in my state. So I got this dogecoin design at spot back when it was around $2k because nobody wanted them and it's carrying a nice premium now. Luck of the draw and I will sell it to the first sucker, I mean buyer who can't wait to hold a golden dogecoin for the premium. I think tax wise it's easy to forget you can write that and the premium off in cost basis. For spot or you just like the design and it helps you stay interested in stacking go for it. It's not hurting anything and it'll probably make up the premium eventually. I grabbed one of those beautiful flowing hair golden ladies direct from the mint too. No ragrets.
